It wasn't the 2 hours a week when he was actually on the ground that caused me to doubt his desire to be there
Even so. He seemed to get along well with many of the lads, got himself out of the first hole in 2022 and returned in good shape even if underdone. Todd himself said there's the football club Tarryn and the woman abuser Tarryn. And if his manager was being a campaigner about an extension/extracting max value and tarryn agreed with the thinking, it didn't mean he wanted to be elsewhere. Anyway, it's all water under the bridge. Can't do shit about it but I hope that member bases continue to get riled up if teams even hint at throwing him a lifeline

Strawman. Heres a strawman for a straw man. One is a player that if he was good enough to play every game would sit on 40 total. The other puts his body on the line and is subsequently sore and had a really good season, another is top 5 defender in the comp and hurt his hand. Knee was good

Eliminating their initial season on an AFL list from calculations:

Goater averaging 6 senior games per season.

Comben averaging 7 senior games per season.

Logue averaging 11 games per season.

It's an inexact calculation but doesn't scream "high availability".

Theres counter arguments upon counter arguments here. Goater will recover fine, lets hope the achilles surgery helps his disposal efficiency. Theres an argument there as he may pull his kicks slightly and able to hit targets a little better

I genuinely can’t believe people are turning on Clarko already. Genuinely baffling.
Success is immediate. They forget Clarkson laid the foundations of the Hawthorn rebuild. Majority of where they are at is the result of Clarkson.

Who in the current team was post clarkson? Weddel, Chol (he’s B grade) and they lucked out on Ginivan. I always like Ginivan that ducking dog. Collingwood ****ed up by trading him. They would be in the finals having him in the team.

He convinced one of the best talents a football club has ever seen to sign on until 2030. Perhaps that tells as much of a story as anything

Did he? My understanding is Harry approached the club regarding the second extension rather than the other way around. The coach may have been a factor in that but it's a bit speculative to attribute that to Clarko.

I still believe Clarko will get this side competitive in 2025 on the provisio:
  1. He is 100% engaged and invested in the team and coaches.
If this racism scandal continues to take his focus from his job, then l'm sorry, Sonja and the board will need to decide:
a. Is it's worth persisting with a coach who is clearly conflicted or cut ties that will cost a 3mill payout (doubt Clarko would have agreed to 6mth clause).
b. Is there a plan B coach.

We can't have another repeat of 2023 and half of 2024 - just hope this high court case is over before the 2025 season because going to defend your name against a player that he has coached and admired in Rioli, will take a toll.

Travelled through the US with Clarkson in the offseason and made the decision to sign for further when he returned. There is no doubt that the trust and faith he has in Clarkson played a significant role in his re-signing, and he’s said as much

Great post. People naturally want an easy explanation.

Choose from:
The coach is passed it
The coach got lucky / was kept in line etc at his last role
The list is shit

It's possible that it's none of those extremes and more bits of Columns A-Z.

No club barring GC is choosing players out of a completely protected little talent pot.

Geelong, Sydney, Port and now Hawthorn find useful players in all kinds of places beyond the early rounds of the draft or northern academies.

Sure clubs like these recruit well. But they're not so much more precise with it than anyone else to explain such a chasm in performance. Ollie Dempsey at North is probably erratic talent. Zane Duursma at Geelong might've been top 5 rising star.

Conversely Clarkson isn't infallible. We stay the course but it's disingenuous to claim our first 2 years have been anything but underwhelming or to glibly blame it on a "shit list" that will be fixed after another 14 drafts.

What's harder to quantify but most likely the cause of our woes is the culture, drive, ambition and ability to best utilise the talent we DO have at the club. While developing and working to a plan that times it's peak to maximally exploit enough opponents long enough to allow us to break through for success.

Before others inevitably overcome our winning system and things move on once more.
No one explanation but one does stands out head and shoulders above the others- a complete lack of impact or influence from our senior players.

Most try hard but as a group they're not up to the level.

Our last two games were woeful but truth is the majority of our post bye improvement was attributable to the quiet growth of the younger guys.

Clarko will get his chance to make it their team.

That's a bit different to saying Clarko convinced him to.sign

No absolutely you’re right to pull me up there. He also signed because he loved playing in front of the big crowds in the big games, the club had a strong recent track record of developing talent, a culture of winning, a destination club that had just managed to convince Dylan Stephens and Zac Fisher to sign, a club that offers huge commercial opportunities outside of football…

Would he get a game for a finals team? Will he be in our flag team? Yes he's been serviceable, but so have many of our players, which is just not enough. He's filled a gap, but there aint many gap fillers in the best teams.
Oleg Markov and Billy Frampton won a flag last year.

Fringe players win flags all the time.

The idea that every player in a team needs to be a world beater in order to have a cohesive team that wins games of footy in nonsense.

I am not saying that you can field a team of potatoes more that the odd potato can help disperse the talent further.

Clarkson's first two years at Hawthorn weren't much better than his first two with us and they were coming from a place miles in front of where we were when he came to Arden St.

Yeah i completely agree.

Im not surprised.

The masochist nuffies demand instant gratification. If that is not delivered, gratification is sought by bloodletting.

Its just how they are.
I'm going down by the river where it's warm and green
I'm gonna have a drink and walk around
I got a lot to think about, oh yeah

This needs to be driven home. Every year there's some player everyone labelled a gumby who stumbles into a premiership team.

Sometimes you get almost a whole team go from laughing stock to premiers.

He was a 35 year old first time head coach at Hawthorn. The two aren't comparable.
That's true, they finished fourth on the ladder four years before he took over.

We've done it once since then, a couple of years after he took over at Hawthorn.

Lol ruptured body? Clutching at straws there. Achilles, maybe but he’s young and treatment is advanced these days. And ACL’s dont impact like they once did. Griff came back and looked good.
Comben has had so many injuries his body has been basically donated to science.

Logue is coming off an ACL and you never know how badly he’d be affected.

Likewise for Goater and his Achillies.

They’re important players, but have significant question marks over them.
