Imagine if we had taken Kelly at 21, Oscar Allen was in play at 26 and then we took Ryan at 32 over f*cking Brayden.

I know you can't look at it that way, but I reckon Ryan would have been available at 32 and Allen had already slid so who knows.

We still made out like bandits, but that would have been one of the greatest drafting years relative to picks in hand in any club's history.... with the added bonus of not having to deal with these Bags.

TBH I highly doubt that Allen would've lasted past 21 - he had already slid massively as it was.

I doubt Ryan would've gone past 26. Port were apparently keen on him, and had a pick soon after ours. I'm actually glad we spent 26 on Liam, because I honestly believe he wouldn't have been able make it interstate. Remember, he was 20 at the time, and I remember reading how hard it was already for him to move from Geraldton to Perth - imagine him having to move interstate away from family.

IMO this would've been the perfect draft:

11: Oscar Allen
21: Tim Kelly
26: Liam Ryan
32: Starcevich/Petrucelle

Obviously I have a massive bias towards WA talent, but this would've been my dream draft then. We got 90% of the way there, and Kelly was probably going to come home anyway. TBH it would've been 100 times worse missing out on Oscar Allen.

I don’t quite understand how the afl can force a trade ?
If we think the price is too high we simply walk away, they can’t force us to trade all our picks surely ?

If we think the price is too high we simply walk away, they can’t force us to trade all our picks surely ?

Think they can "mediate" the process.
Or perhaps some sort of under the table deal to look after which ever team ends up with the raw deal.

As an avid follower of all American sports, I must say... we are well behind the times!!

Having said that, we don’t get paid the big $$$ they do over there.... and much rather our system than the NRL!!!

Based on the current trend, Kelly should come to WCE... let’s make it happen.
However... there needs to be a line in the sand moment (not in relation to this one).

It’s a professional league... u get drafted and go where you go! You don’t get the luxury of picking a club you want to go to (happens nowhere else, u r paid by the club). If it’s in the best interest of the club to move you on, so be it.

Free agent is a free agent, no compo. If the club can’t sign you or own the rights to trade you while in contract.... tough t***ies!!!! You get nothing back.

It's funny how Freo don't seem to get the implied insult inherent in Victorian efforts to force Kelly to Freo. The Victorians think that a) If Kelly can be forced to go there then Freo will willingly cough up picks 6 and 7, and b) It doesn't really matter if Kelly goes there because Freo are not a flag contender and so Kelly going there doesn't increase the chances of another interstate flag. They clearly see Freo as being on a par with Gold Coast, as in they are a useless and poorly run club, who are not in contention and won't be for a long time and who are so desperate and unable to find players who want to play there that they will pay two top 10's for a 26 year old who has already unequivocally rejected them multiple times if he can be forced to accept going there. They think Freo are so desperate and so poorly run a club that they will pay massive overs for Kelly.

Exactly they are in no position to demand anything, take what they are given or get nothing. I rest easy knowing that West Coast are a very well run business, and will make a good business decision.
1 hour left in the draft and the Cats haven't taken the deal and WC aren't budging, Cats can either take our offer or get nothing, we are win win either way, they potentially lose their 2nd best player for nothing.
I am actually looking forward to this unfold, just for the Scott faces.

A mutual respect for the Eagles (always has, but amplified by your supporters and the way they treated my team on our sad return to footy post Walsh) and the fact that I wont see a flag for 4 years at least.

Youre a Non-Vic Club that has an annoying little insecure baby brother, like the Crows, we share many similarities.

I genuinely hope you bend the Cats over, even if you dont, you get another chance in 2020 to knock them out of the finals with Kelly in your side.
