Just Xi trying to cause his trouble. Penny might be pathetically weak (on Putin, Xi, Netanhyu or actually delivering any aid to the region) but Albo is playing it smart - condemn in private and increase our military support to the peaceful neighbours that Xi is threatening. Shout it out especially worded the way the idiot Scummo did (who kept saying China when Xi is the problem not the Chinese who don't support Xi) and it is easily spun by Xis propaganda bots and requires them to do something to save face

The result in the Black by-election, giving the Malinauskas Govt its second by election switch to them in 12 months is extraordinary.
But as Antony Green points out - the strong swing against the Libs in Black are due to unique local circumstances, in particular the former Liberal MP and opposition leader being video snorting 'white powder in his kitchen and facing criminal drug supply charges, that will have zero impact on the Federal election.
Albanese's formal announcement of the student debt cut was held in the Adelaide seat of Sturt. In the live stream, Penny Wong spoke before Albanese and explicitly stated an ambition to win the seat off the Liberals and therefore hold every seat in metropolitan Adelaide. In an election where they'll be fighting for a bare majority, it's a worthy goal.
I get the sense that the Malinauskas Labor government is broadly popular here, but people are hurting from cost of living pressures. Rental vacancy rates in Adelaide are virtually nil. I can see Labor losing Boothby (my seat) back to the Liberals, and failing to pick up Sturt, but I can also definitely see them holding Boothby and picking up Sturt. I don't see the recent failed bid to restrict abortion or the shambolic situation of the state Liberals having much effect.

Yes- this result is almost entirely down to the peculiarities of the local politics.
But dare I say that you can bet that if the SA Liberals had held onto the seat, even with a swing towards Labor, the national media would have laid the blame solely at Albo's feet.
Albo really needs to thank Dutton for continually giving him easy wins. After criticising correctly (albeit hypocritically) Albo for failing to cut immigration quickly or by enough, he now blocks the cuts to student numbers.

Two parties fighting over who can be tougher on the scapegoat for every problem (immigrants), when the real problem are the donors to both parties (large international corporations) taking minerals for nothing and paying stuff all taxes.
Probably some Sarina Russo-style Govt provider donates to Dutton too, to keep the Uni visa rort going. Can't think of why else the Coalition are blocking it. Except they saw that it didn't matter when the GOP blocked migration reform in the US and still won votes based on those immigration reforms.
Dutton will do the same thing and the electorate won't hear what the ALP say, because they're idiots who will drift off and talk about other things.
We have many problems, most of which our levels of immigration has no impact on. However excessive immigration is one of the many causes of our housing problems and inflation but the advantage is cutting immigration (other than in areas the country (not some lobbyist) needs skills) is it take effect quickly. We could easily cut unskilled migration and start applying more rigorous standards to what is skilled migration (ie. more health care and trades while dropping beauticians, bnb managers etc)

Dutton wants to cut 100,000 students. The only people who actually want to live in apartments in outer suburbs.
We already have the most stringent migration policies of any other western nation, practically everyone who comes in has to have some qualification (or be getting one).
Bickering over which qualifications and jobs count or don't is faffing around the edges. And those industries cut off would complain to high heaven.
Drastically cut migration and see inflation soar, growth plummet, and taxes rise as governments try to make up the lost revenue to keep everything afloat. Businesses will be competing for increasingly scarce labour which will push wages up and up to attract whatever talent is left. Immigration isn't just all about housing supply and infrastructure...at least that's what my right leaning economics lecturers would say.
Have to say though, Labor is throwing out red meat left, right, and centre for the masses today.

The only way to look at any policy is "Will this reduce my (or anybody's) cost of Living or increase my wage".
The answer to these is no.
International students are keeping cafe and restaurant prices low.

Not enough that places still up the prices though.
Increasing your wage is only good if its just you.
Increase everyone's wage and you just make the Dollar worth less.
But with so many goods produced overseas and a lot of wealth creation outside income (wages), wages can all go up and it won't necessarily drive inflation at the same rate. The last bout of inflation taught us that. Wages were increasing to catch up to inflation, and that was while inflation was actually coming down.
