Autopsy Autopsy vs Carlton & the Umpires

Umpires today... Dead set taking the piss.

But for actual analysis:

Competitive first half, but our forward line is still our weakest link (and that's saying something considering no McKay or Logue today).

Even before he got injured Larkey just does not lead well, and it's such a massive issue for us. Zurhaar, Comben, and even CT provided better leads in our forward line.
Larkey had two great games to start this season, but he was poor last week, and poor today as well, noting that he played half the game clearly injured.

Our midfield is great and they can mostly hold their heads up high today. Liked Will Phillips showing some good signs, and he's coming from a fair way back after last season so happy to keep putting games into him because he's got talent, now just needs experience.

Luke McDonald has been bad for four straight games to start 2023 and we need to talk about it, because it's hurting us...
Some of Wills defensive efforts were very pleasing. The one where he got Docherty for the trip - gave the free kick but slowed up the play. Great effort. Keep playing him. Another 30-40 games and he'll be an important cog of our midfield.

This. Not sure how Will Phil has become the whipping boy.

Coming from a long way back fitness wise. Pump more games into him. Will be a gem.

Happy with the effort. More scoring shots and only factors beyond our control deflated our momentum.
Definitely some structural, composure and class issues, but very pleased with the effort.

9 of the 11 bottom ranked players were ours.

Love the bloke, the intent is there, but we need more output from Chom, particularly goals.

I agree but just watching the highlights on Fox, can't remember more than 1 or 2 times we moved the ball inside 50 where there was a 1-1

Long way back is underselling it. First preseason was interrupted coming in injured, and year two we all know about which would have actively set him back rather than just pausing his progress.

Dude just needs game time pumped into him, some shockingly early calls being made.

Lost by 23 and the Umpires gifted Carlton at least 5 goals. And we gifted them at least three.

A great effort from the boys to not fold like last season and lose by 50+ points. They fought it out until the end and actually won the final quarter.

Despite the loss Clarko should be happy with the effort, we have made massive gains after just one preseason under his tutelage, there is no doubt we are heading in the right direction.

Larkey needs to take goal kicking lessons during the week, outside of him (and Stephenson) we are terrible in front of goal. Larkey has kicked 12.1, Stephenson 5.1, the rest 26.29.

Loved Phillips, Powell, Curtis, last quarter
Powell was missing more targets than he was hitting and Curtis was awful today. Phillips I have concerns about because while his work rate is high, I can't see how he is going to close the gap by being at such a physical disadvantage in regards to his height, lack of pace, agility and athleticism.

Observations:

- umps killed the game when it was neck & neck; you can’t put a price on momentum or indeed the deliberate arresting of it to favour another team
(this is the only game in the world where officials are so noticeable - are they all this bad or is this a contrived sport?)

- we kick straight, we overcome the Blues and the umpires

- could’ve been a blowout but wasn’t, we fought until the end unlike the past few years, the score looked respectable

- should’ve subbed Larks off for Greenwood, in fact Hugh should’ve started

- all of this without big defenders, Carlton is probably the team we needed them most for

- biggest crowd at marvel since ‘13, biggest between us and Carlton since ‘99 GF

I almost feel good about this loss. Almost. I feel like we should’ve won. Our kicking bothered me today but not as much as the umps and I don’t mean to feel this way but I feel like we’re purposely umpired out of the game because we’re a smaller club and the establishment don’t want us to succeed.
Today was either complete incompetence or contrived. And I can’t believe 4 “professionals” can be so consistently bad, so it’s the latter. We’re up against it. I’m f’n sick of it.

Oh well.

Oh.. and, most of all:

- Sonja 💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍

Not a bad effort considering no Logue & McKay and some dodgy umpiring. Biggest issue is the ease at which the opposition rebound from our forward 50. Jy was probably our best, Sheezel & Ziebell were good down back. Zurhaar tried his guts out and played a lone up forward. Tucker looks like he might be a useful half back. Phillips got another full game in and was ok. We badly need Comben to start clunking some of those marks. Can we please banish Howe to the VFL for the rest of the year?

Some of his one touch hand balls were sublime. Still does the occasional fluffer but that’s all down to experience.

He’ll be fine 👍

100%

You'd think people would hold off given how quick people on here wrote off cunnington and LDU.
