Autopsy Autopsy vs Collingwood aka the Great Pain Robbery

Yesterday’s loss could possibly be the most painful loss since the ‘98 GF?

In so many ways, it’s just painful.

Nope. Adelaide 2013. A better, more experienced North team against a team about our level having already lost 3 close games already that season - including the week before. Yesterday's loss, a shattering as it was, cost us nothing. The 2013 losses cost us a finals spot.

Shit umpiring shouldn’t play a role when you’re 54 points up.

Jeez the boys played some good footy in the first half, once they’re fit enough to play 4 quarters at that standard then we’re going to have fun.
It shouldn't but it did. The Bailey Scott touched goal just shouldn't be missed. Helen Keller could see it was touched!

We should not have let them back in but the missed decisions gave us no chance of winning it in those final minutes. That is wrong regardless of what team we are talking about. That is why non North people are so up in arms. It's wrong. Very wrong.

Yep. Shit because they deserved the win yesterday, but in context we move on and makes little difference to the pathway we are on. Much better signs the last couple of weeks. If we keep this up we can potentially put a real case towards some good players from other clubs to get on board now while they can.

I’ve had time to reflect on the game yesterday and watched the replay last night and have a few thoughts.

Firstly, I am just so proud of what our boys did yesterday but it was gut-wrenching to fall short at the death and I’m absolutely gutted that we didn’t get the win.

My key takeaways after a bit of time to reflect are:

We have the on-field talent and a coach who can harness that talent to take on any team.

The reigning premiers had to throw absolutely everything at us to scrape home. I doubt any other current side bar Collingwood would have been able to do what they did to get back in the game.

It wasn’t lack of effort or mistakes that ultimately cost us; it was not being as fit/developed as Collingwood – they are a battle-hardened unit with a wealth of experience and some extremely talented players. We have some outstanding talent and our team is starting to gel but we started to tire midway through the third quarter, mistakes crept in and we couldn’t keep up the pressure that put us nine goals up.

We didn’t give up and came back to hit the front after Collingwood gained the lead late in the game. I can’t think of any time in the last five years where we wouldn’t have dropped our heads and just capitulated.

The first half was the best football we have played in more than ten years. That’s what we’ve got to look forward to in coming years and I’m so pumped about that prospect.

The umpiring was deplorable and definitely influenced the result.

This loss should burn in the hearts of every player out there yesterday, it should be a valuable lesson and each and every player should be able to take something away from the game to work on to get that little bit better. I’ve got no doubt that Clarko will be making it a learning experience and be harnessing the agony of the loss.

I can’t wait to see what the future brings for this crop of players and coaches.

Lastly - George Wardlaw will be the best player in the competition.

Very good post.

Perhaps Clarko should reflect on what happened after the 2008 GF Hawthorn win over Geelong. Geelong were the favourites to go back to back and such was the hurt that the Geelong players felt from that, it fuelled a burning desire to never lose again to the Hawks. It worked for quite a few years and only fell off when their players from that era had mainly retired. Perhaps he could use that in reverse to spur our boys on.

Well as an old Royboy, I'm still getting over this shocking loss in 1991.

Maybe its a fair reason why I loathe the umpires.

It hurts, but that Michael Gleeson article helps put things in perspective.

When all is said and done, if someone had told me on Saturday that on Sunday we were going to play "thrilling, authoritative" footy in "the game of the year to date", I would have taken it happily.

If anything the the result just proves how important Simpkin is to us.

If he played we win that.

Yes he was definitely missed yesterday, but there was an upside insofar as it enabled Phillips to come in and play a very good role on Daicos.

Hopefully he will retain his spot and build on yesterday, because, in my opinion, he is too talented to just let go to some other club, which may be able to harness that talent into a long term player.

Nah. Adelaide 2013. Kerridge. Petrenko. Natanui after the siren.

Those games in that season when we actually were a good team and kept choking were so unbelievably painful
Natanui after the siren after that BS free to Selwood.

The pitiful round 22 loss to Port in 2008: all we had to do was win to make the top 4. St kilda had to beat the Dons by 100+. We get belted by 60 and the saints thrash Essendon by 125. We go out and get thrashed by Sydney in the elimination final if I recall.

The 19 men on the field Sydney draw.

The interchange debacle vs Sydney.

All these are up there for me and blow the sheer frustration and disappointment of yesterday out of the water.

I’m not usually one to bag umpires and think that often too much is made of a single poor decision late in a game. But this game went way beyond that. If not for the one-sided umpiring across the second half, we win that game by 5 goals. It’s not just the decisions / not decisions that directly changed the score, it’s also the impact on the momentum of the game.

e.g. if either of Sidebottom’s or Quaynor’s blatant throws were paid, Collingwood don’t kick 8 goals in a row - the only kick 4 in a row and then (assuming we kick the straightforward goal) they’ve only cut the margin by 3 goals. It completely changes momentum and time and again that favoured the Pies yesterday.

The real story here isn’t about how awesome the pies were to come back and win it’s how a raw young team on the bottom of the ladder exposed the reigning premiers. We should never have won this game based on normal metrics but the Pies we’re found out and the other serious finals contenders saw it and will practice it against them, this will be the Pies last good season for a decade if they keep playing like that. In the meantime once our lads build their endurance and learn to play the system for four quarters we will be looking at the pies in our rear view mirror from next year, bookmark it 😎

Yes there's no rule that I'm aware of that dictates that once you're a certain margin ahead you don't get blatant free kicks paid to you.

I still hold out hope that the footy God is going pay us back in spades one day.

If there's one thing we can take out of yesterday it's the Portaloo's losing as well.
Pies losing and them winning would have seen them in 2nd with a game v Brisvegas at home this week. Now, they really, really, " REALLY " need to win this week as their draw not as easy at it might have been.

*** a downhill skier of the highest order. Hasn't got the footy, shows absolutely no interest in getting it back.
We got Harry & George - there is a God.

I so wish we would’ve maintained our lead. 😢😢 I wish we would’ve won. So upsetting. I am so proud of our team - but so devastated at the same time. It was just so gut wrenching. All I can say is thank god this happened in a game that means nothing to our club rather than a final or a game to get into finals or something. That’s my silver lining.

Natanui after the siren after that BS free to Selwood.

Anytime time we played in Perth it was like starting 5 goals down. I do not think umpires fix games or any such thing, but playing at Subiaco in that period against West Coast was a ****ing disgrace.

The prelim was the only game I ever thought was rigged. I thought it was some sort of social experiment. If that happened to Essendon there would have been a royal commission. A decade on and I still get angry.

I’m probably more annoyed now than I was directly after the game.

Not only at the umpiring. It was legitimately shit.

But also at the fact with very few personnel changes we could play like that.

Meaning we have had that in us all along.

We play like that against a bunch of sides and would not be sitting on one win.

This is mostly what I've been raging about for a while.

While we are a young side we have a fair chunk of talent and enough serviceable (but not world-beating) foot soldiers to play decent structured footy with the occasional glimpses of brilliance, but have simply been unable to mentally put it together for years now.

Even as far back as the Noble days you could see glimpses of legitimate football team with potential, but it ultimately doesn't matter how many talented kids you shuffle through if you can't exorcise those mental demons that become internalised as a result of getting beaten down game after game after game.

Still so gutted for the whole club today, we really deserved the win.

I thought he did say those things Buckley said he wanted clarko to say.
Strange take from Buckley. Clarko basically said we decided mid year to pick sides that will keep us in games for as long as possible (ie won't be picking kids who haven't got tanks/aren't strong enough). We're now able to apply pressure at 200 plus for 2 to 3 quarters and look what we can do in that time. But we're still young and can't do it for 4 quarters ... yet. Watch out once we can.

One look on facebook this morning and I am now beginning to see what everyone means by the entitled, arrogant pies supporters. They're everywhere today!
