Preview Best 22 in 2012 (minus draftees)

I may be wrong but I'm sure it is round 13 from previous seasons a club can upgrade a rookie. prior to that their needs to be a LTI.

as much as i'd like to see Spur play for us i'd hate their to be any LTI. Maybe as the season unfolds a number of rookies can add a new dimension to the starting 22.

From what I have seen gav Roberts looks ready to go, however he only played a couple of games last season and in the ressies so he may need to find his match fitness at first and get his touch back. Where as Spurr has played alot of footy last year. Will be really interesting to see. Hope they both dominate.

Spurr is ineligible to be considered as best 22 - according to the title of the thread anyway.
At this stage Morabito looks like being a scratching and Mundy could even be a late withdrawal.

There is no indication that Mora or Mundy will be considered a LTI, which would necessitate a minimum 8 weeks out.

Reports are that Mundy & Chris Mayne will be in Full main group training late January.
Morabito I don't know but I doubt he'll be playing in the early rounds.
A LTI at this stage would be the entire first half of the season out I reckon.
Therefore I can't see either Spurr or Roberts in Purple unless a very serious injury occurs. Obviously nobody wants that.
Selecting either in imaginary teams is tempting luck , of which we've had FA in recent years.
So , no Roberts or Spurr.
The AFL website is Shizen to get any meaningful info from and nobody can tell me the Rookie rules for this season apart from LTI'S.

The thread title suggested Other than draftees , yet some are saying they are red hot chances.

Dude, people have been including new draftees the entire thread, almost everybody has included Zac Dawson for instance, a new draftee.

Morabito and Mundy are Best 22 when fit, so of course they would be included.

My 22 would be something like

B: Broughton Dawson Silvagni
HB: Suban McPharlin Duffield
C: Hill Mundy Fyfe
HF: Morabito Pavlich Mayne
F: Ballantyne Clarke Mellington

R: Sandilands Barlow De boer

Int: Johnson Griffin Lower
Sub: Mzungu

Fair bit of depth coming through, host of players with AFL experience I'm not including too including
Grover
McPhee
Bradley
Crowley
Roberton
Ibbotson
Clancee
Crichton
Pitt
Walters
A few of these guys will definitely get games this year, good cover against injury, and a few new recruits namely Spurr, Sutcliffe and Neale look ready made already.

riteo, I cannot better your best 22. For individual games a few players may change from the top 5 or 6 on the depth list, or depending on form in the wafl forcing a change.

From the rookie list I am pretty keen to see theGav Roberts get a run, and also Spurr, both ahead of Clanceeeee.

You know one of things I hope happens in the pre-season is that our forward line gets the chance to find some chemistry before the season proper starts. It will give them their best shot, and I also think it helps settle the midfield. That has been a rarity in our pre-seasons as far back as I can remember.

B: Broughton Dawson Silvagni
HB: Suban McPharlin Duffield

Almost definitely that back six (Maybe in a different order but thats a mute point). Maybe Ibbotson for Duffield.

C: Hill Mundy Fyfe

Strong centreline, but I can see Pitt, Morabito, Ibbotson or even Sheridan to free up Fyfe either to the centre or HFF.

HF: Morabito Pavlich Mayne
F: Ballantyne Clarke Mellington

Weakest part of the ground - just not sure we are going to get enough goals out of Clarke, Mellington and Mayne (Though I think Mellington has potential for a greater output). I expect Crozier to push hard to be in here purely on ability to be dangerous around goals, as well as Walters - these guys can actually hurt more on the scoreboard. Also not convinced that Clarke will be better than Griffin as a forward - this might mean a swap from the bench.

R: Sandilands Barlow De Boer

Just not sold on DeBoer yet - Why not have Barlow, Fyfe and Mundy in the centre, given that we should have at least serviceable talent on the wings now with Hill, Pitt, Sheridan and maybe Crozier? Also not convinced Crowley is finished yet either as a midfield tagger - wise heads are always valued. Or even Ibbotson?

Int: Johnson Griffin Lower
Sub: Mzungu

I would probably go a fit McPhee over Lower and Ibbotson over Johnson / Mzungu.

I'm with you Impromptu - think he adds a lot of run and carry around the ground. I would like to see him develop into a Roger Hayden type rebounding defender.

Morabitto Pavlich Mayne

Ballantyne Clarke Mellington

It may be the weakest part of the ground for us, and the mix may not quite be right, but if I was the forward coach and was given those players and told to get them to work, I'd back myself. Individually they are difficult to match up on and could create real issues for most backlines I would think, and there is a fair bit of defensive nous in the mix too.

Now of course Clarke, Morabitto and Mellington have no real runs on the board, and there are question marks over accuracy, but I would feel confident that that crew can create some opportunities.

Whatever combination we go with, I just hope they get the same kind of opportunity to settle that we afford a backline.

Guys, you upgrade one rookie at the start of the season, therefore making Spurr (or Roberts, any rookie) availabe to the squad.
In my opinion, without even the slighest doubt in the world, Spurr will get that spot.

Not sure, are we allowed to upgrade a rookie with Grover and now Pav, too, on the veteran list?

Pav's eligibility for the veterans list would have played a huge part in our TPP planning over the last couple of years, I'd be shocked if he's not on the veterans list now that it's available.

I would too, BUT, we did make the play for Clark and splashed large dollars around. Those dollars must have gone somewhere since he didn't sign up. But like IP says, if we had decided to keep him off the vet list to soak up the dollars then we could have another rookie.

My understanding of the "Rookie Upgrade" was that you can upgrade rookies depending on how many veterans are on the list. (at beginning of year)

2 veterans = 0 upgrades
1 veteran = 1 upgrade
0 veterans = 2 upgrades

As far as I understand we have Grover and Pav on the veterans list but doesnt McPharlin qualify for vets this year? If so, wouldnt his wage be higher than Grovers and therefore better off having him on the veterans list?

This is what I like most about this particular forward set up, other than Pavlich, every player there would produce excellent pressure and I think the opposition would have a very hard time running the ball out. Clarke is extremely impressive athletically for such a big man.

To Ysaye, I had Mora forward in case he isn't at full fitness immediately, if he were I'd swap he and Fyfe around and I'd back in Lower and De boer over flakes like Ibbotson any day of the week.

im not certain that mora, when fully fit is best 22 at the moment anyhow. Lower and deboer will definitely have roles to play this year. as will ibbotson... good news is that lyon dont put up with crap, if ibbo squibs a contest, he will be out quicker than you can say "masten is rubbish"... same with johnson for that matter. wouldnt surprise me though if ross sees a lot of dalsanto in ibbotson
