McPharlin doesn't qualify for this years Vet list because he turns 30 after the cutoff date.

Here is a link to an article that explains the rule changes coming in 2013:

So once again Freo show that they have the list management and TPP in hand. Grover will surely retire after this coming season and then they replace him on the vets list with McPharlin. Maybe even a slight bump in pay for McPharlin's new contract (which I think is due at the end of this year)

im not certain that mora, when fully fit is best 22 at the moment anyhow. Lower and deboer will definitely have roles to play this year. as will ibbotson... good news is that lyon dont put up with crap, if ibbo squibs a contest, he will be out quicker than you can say "masten is rubbish"... same with johnson for that matter. wouldnt surprise me though if ross sees a lot of dalsanto in ibbotson

I think Morabitto brings something to the side that no other player on our list does.. He obviously still has the development to go, but he has demonstrated aggression, pace, size and power which any coach would be pretty keen to harness. Harvey clearly wanted him in playing him at every possible occassion, and when he went down pretty much replacing him with Pavlich as a midfield fixture. If Lyon can see dalSanto in Ibbotson he'll certainly have Morabitto in the best 22.

your probably right, he probably does have mora in our best 22... that was just my own opinion, which obviously means nothing in the grand scheme of things.... as for ibbo, well he is a smooth mover with good skills, can be a little soft at times, but has great potential.... im just saying there are similarities between the two, that ross may pick up on and try to replicate what he did with dal, with ibbo

The big hope with Lyon is that we may finally have a coach who has the ability to help players realise their greatest potential. And especially those mid-tier types like Ibbo.

This is what I like most about this particular forward set up, other than Pavlich, every player there would produce excellent pressure and I think the opposition would have a very hard time running the ball out. Clarke is extremely impressive athletically for such a big man.

To Ysaye, I had Mora forward in case he isn't at full fitness immediately, if he were I'd swap he and Fyfe around and I'd back in Lower and De boer over flakes like Ibbotson any day of the week.

Agreed.

Don't mind Ibbo (flake's a little harsh eh?) but would rather De Boer, and maybe Lower in the team. Only reservation on Lower is that I don't think he chases all that hard. Never a problem there for DeBoer.

Agreed also that I don't see a spot for Crowley, except as a depth tagger.

Still not sold on having MJ on the bench, but he has the talent. If he doesn't deliver then Ross won't hesitate to punt him off the the Magoos. If MJ does step up then good on him.

Something different

FB: Broughton Dawson McPharlin
HB: Johnson Silvani Duffield
C: Morabito Mundy Hill
HF: Fyfe Pavlich Mayne
FF: Clarke Bradley Ballantyne
R: Sandilands Barlow Lower
INT: Griffen De Boer Ibbotson
SUB: Mzungu

All the highlighted players (12 of them) are 190cm+ so really the team is too tall on paper yet I'd love to see how this side would go in an NAB cup game just to see how it went.

Lower and de Boer aren't vertically challenged either at 189, and I wouldn't mind knowing the current measurements for Fyfe and Ibbo. They certainly look taller than their listed details.

Think that is pretty close to what I expect from what I heart during preseason. Lyon talked about McPhee in the backline, too, so he might replace either Johnson or even Duffield (?). But I tend to think one or two talls need to be replaced with quality midfield run, but do not really now who that might be. Probably whoever does best during preseason. And Suban missing...

Yeah, but Mundy, Barlow and Morabito aren't disadvantaged by their height. I wouldn't call them 'talls'.

I also think Jonhson and Mcpharlin provide a fair bit of run despite being talls.

I actually didnt realise Lower was that tall and I think Duffield's close to that mark as well. Like the others are saying Fyfe said in an interveiw that he is now 191cm but I was just working off what's on the Freo site.

Yeah forgot about Suban and would definitely have him in my best 22. In the end I dont actually think this side would ever be given a game but I'd just like to see them play and see how it works.

According to freo's website McPharlin was born in 1981 so he's already 30 and therefore eligible for the veterans list.

That article isn't very clear on the new rules but it looks like we might be getting screwed. It appears as though veterans are now granted a flat rate of about $100,000 outside of the salary cap. Under the current rules 50% of their salary was outside the salary cap for 1 to 2 players, 33% for 3 players, 25% for 4 players, etc.

For the 2013 season we'd have Pavlich, Grover, McPharlin and Sandilands eligible for veterans status. For arguments sake I'll assume Pav and Sandi average 900k between them, McPharlin earns about 500k and Grover 300k.
Under the current rules our best result would be to have just Pav and Sandi as veterans.
Pav (900k) + Sandi (900k) = 1.8 mil * 50% = 900k outside the cap
Pav (900k) + Sandi (900k) + McPharlin (500k) + Grover (300k) = 2.6 mil * 25% = 650k outside the cap

Under the possible new rules we'd only have 100k outside the cap for each veteran so 400k total (300k if Grover retires). We could have to potentially pay our players 600k less than we intended.

It has been pointed out to me that it seems Lyon likes a tall team. He played 2 full on ruckmen in 2009 (Gardiner and King) and fielded a tall defense (Fisher, Dawson, Blake, Gilbert, Gwilt) during his years at St Kilda. Also everyone is taller - few ruckmen are less than 6ft 7in (in the old money) these days, where 6ft 5in was not uncommon a few years back.

We fielded a fairly short team last year I think, with no true tall forward, after Kepler was dropped, and often only 1 ruckman. I think we are likely to see a much taller team on the park this year.

(I am keen on the idea of seeing Pav, Clarke and Kep all in the forward line - I don't know if it would work but I think it is worth a try and wouldn't it be different to last year).

I don't think he's played enough for us yet, don't you have to play for 10 years for the one club to be a veteran?

Plus Koschitzke when available.

Tall is probably good on Etihad - small, indoors - but perhaps not so good at Subi. Last year we were belted on Subi by quicker teams such as Richmond and Carlton. Of course that may have been due to our crapness more than anything else.
Were WCE a significantly taller side than us last year? Their forward line was, but over the whole ground, I've got no idea.

And another thing. In a defensive plan based on occupation of areas, rather than one on one contests, tallness is a good attribute to have. You do need at least one tall defender with pace(McPharlin) to keep up with the occasional tall forward with pace(Franklin) and at least one smallish defender with pace(?) to keep up with small and tricky forwards with pace (Milne, Betts, etc, etc).

Cant believe the depth we have at the moment, not even going to try to guess the lineup.
Must be close to the best depth in the league. I suppose that's the upside of having had 2 of the past 3 years injury ravaged, you find blokes. If we look organised in the NAB Im heading to the TAB.

Good points. Hopefully he gives it a run sometime.
