RE: Hawthorn and Shiel.

We have an exciting group of youngsters, growing together. Add Walsh, Setters and McGovern in there.

We have just had two inspirational players announced as co-captains.

Hawthorn have won a number of premierships pretty recently - I wouldn't be surprised if they take premierships for granted by now.

Carlton hasn't won one in a long time.

There is this air of excitement as we build towards number '17, given what the club has endured over the last 18 odd years.

Dylan, I just feel that at Carlton you will experience emotions a thousand times greater than elsewhere. The next premiership with us will be very special and you have a great opportunity to be part of that.

1. I’m glad S. Mitchell didn’t come to us. In fact, I sighed with relief. I’m not a ‘win at all costs’ kind of guy ... S. Mitchell was a dirty player - along the same lines as Lewis and Hodge, but got away with most of it. Don’t like him. I respected Geelong’s premiership teams, not Hawthorn’s.

2. I’m super excited about Setterfield. I think I’m more excited about this than even if Shiel were to nominate us, tbh.

3. Relates to 2. You know when you like a girl and you make an effort to chat and then there are a bunch of other guys also keen and it turns into this gross, phoney situation where everyone is trying to ‘win’ the girl ... well, I always walk away bc I’ve got more self-respect than to be a phoney dick... for some reason, that’s how I’m feeling about Shiel right now.. I don’t want us to be desperate. If he’s not REALLY wanting to play for us, despite his history of being an avid fan, then I just don’t know that I really want him to play for us - does he deserve the honour if he’s so torn?? ... the more it goes on, the stronger these feelings become (although, I can understand wanting to leave an announcement until after the b’n’f).

I think you can look at Shiel another way.

Think he is a straight laced guy wanting to win something with GWS to make it all worthwhile, and he has loyalty to that notion. That is something that could be respected. Remember GWS have told him he can investigate opportunities in Vic.

I'm not sure he ever came out and said he wants out for his big payday this year. It is more the fact GWS get better compensation so preempt next year.

I think if we get him, we get a no nonsense guy that will do his part with the minimum of fuss. I like that idea.

Regardless of whether or not Shiel likes the pic, Cripps and Docherty deserve heaps better than something that can hint out mockery. These two are going to lead us up the ladder in the coming seasons.
