Here is a list of FA small forwards that I wouldn't mind seeing in the navy blue (for the right price of course):

Jamie Elliot (once he's Andrew Russell-ised he could be elite once again)
Paul Puopolo (1 year deal as a player/mentor to our younger potential SFs i.e Owies)
Daniel Menzel (if he can get his body right he'd be a good get, looking unlikely though)
Tory Dickson (veteran that still has good goalsense, kicked 24 goals from 17 games this year)

All this being said, apparently the coaching staff are really high on Matt Owies potentially being a small forward of the future, so maybe they try to get in one big fish like Paps and then leave the other pocket open for Owies to fill.

I've been ignoring any Cogs thoughts or rumours all week. Conversation changed as it seemed we were asked to hose down the chatter. McClure being so positive, then followed by tcp' s comments make me confident. But knowing Gil is meddling shits me to no end.

Pressure isn't an issue in our forward line, since Teague took over we're really good at locking it into our 50 once it's in there, it's kicking goals that's the issue. We have no genuine goal kickers outside of our 3 talls, so we need to target someone who has good small forward craft and can kick goals.

When we play our young mids and Gibbons etc. forward, their issue isn't pressure, they're good at that, they just struggle to get themselves in the right spots to crumb and kick goals. This is exactly what vet FA's like Dickson can provide while we wait for either:

A. Our young mids learn their forward craft and become proficient there.
B. Owies and possibly 1 or 2 small forwards we get from the draft develop in the 2's.
C. We slowly trade in elite small forwards that can provide pressure AND kick goals i.e Papley.

I think it's a big growth area for all our key forwards. I'd be getting N Riewoldt down there (if he'd to it) to do some work on leading patterns, repeat leading, leading at speed etc.

They are good players, but would you feel comfortable if someone said Ellis would come across on $700k?

It always costs more to get players out of other clubs, so if you're going to throw good money at players, you want to be selective.

It's a different story when you're bringing in fringe players on $200k contracts. Expectations on these players are generally limited.

Don't get sucked in by the Hawks. That's 2 finals misses in the last 3 years with extreme reliance on veterans.

Please, they have the oldest list in the comp. Risky game bringing in free agents (especially injury prone ones) on top dollar. Great for Clarko looking like a genius omg they might finish 8th! But not the right model for actual success.

Let Cogs go there, between him, jaegar, mitchell , Sicily, wingard going to be hard to keep the model up bringing in people each year.... and Patton’s salary....but hey Scrimshaw took his first mark in 6 years so I’m sure we will hear they don’t need to go to the draft.

Kicking isn't his only problem, yeah he can crash a pack and take a contested mark, but he doesn't know, where, when or how to lead to the correct places.
