Not if he is on the contract suggested by Forty3
Enough depth in those names plus Owies and Motlop going forward. Philp and Binns as well.

Binns is not a forward or clearance midfielder, and I’d be surprised if Philpy is at Carlton next season.

We had all of these players on our list 10 weeks ago and it was our weakest area on the ground. Can’t afford to be complacent.

Binns will be bloody hungry for 2024 now he'd be watching Hollands and the boys seeing some success. Will be a big part of our sustained success.

Would've loved to see him get a run this year but much rather us perform the way we are and encourage accountability and integrity in selection.
I think disposal efficiency holds Binns back. He will need a pre season to improve that aspect of his game to ensure selection in a good side

Last year we brought in Cowan with our current 2nd rounder, and Acres with our 3rd. So this year we'll bring in another 1st round pick through the National Draft, as well as Duffy and Monahan. Next year the Campo twins.

Makes ya head spin!!!
Hollands R1, Cowan R2 and Acres R3 was an extremely good set of pickups last year. Cowan has shown lots and will develop well, and the other two just about competition leading wingers making a huge difference to the way we play, defensive pressure, end-to-end running, the odd goal (Acres lately), a key to our pressure game. Great work by Austin, and credit to these guys for their contribution so far.

And add Binns R2 last year with our pick. Good haul.

Update to an earlier post (on the list management thread but it's more rumor related than a list management thing so posting it here). If there's fresher info provided by an ITK previously then apologies and please disregard.

The same person who provided the TDK information before he re-signed clarified his position on Gresham. He had earlier said that in Gresham would never be a "Carlton player "

He has stressed that this was only his opinion and that "Sometimes clubs take on players we're not fans of."

He could not confirm or deny the club's position but did say that the info coming out of the club as much more related to re-signings (of those you'd expect) than bringing additional players into the club. His "gut feeling" was that the players we do being into the club are much more likely to help strengthen "list profile" than anything else

. I take that to mean hitting the draft as has been written a lot this year.

Maybe he trains with captain crunch, Lauchie Obrien , not so much!

Makes sense to me, the majority of our recent success can be attributed to hard running, hard tackling, high pressure small/half forwards who play a selfless team oriented style.

I think Gresh is a good player on his day but he is NOT that kind of player. Would seem strange to chase a player who is at odds with our gameplan.

Certain talk around Touhy retiring... part time coaching role with us? Kicking coach and Irish lad mentor.

Would love this to eventuate - and pitching it as coaching + mentoring two Irish imports might be enough to convince him.

But at the same time, Geelong brought over that young Fabio Mullins bloke last year, so Tuohy may be happy to transition into coaching at the Cats to work with him if the Irish connection is a major appeal.

Also - no idea if Tuohy would even be interested in coaching...or make a good coach.

I think from here on out, any big money recruit would need to be someone 100% bankable. An absolute professional, hungry for success, proven to be a team player, and willing to take unders to be part of the club. Gresham doesn't fit that mold for me, I'd go so far as to say that it'd be a coin flip on whether he's even best 22 for us.

So if we're picking him up, it's because he's willing to take a very conservative contract. Sub-$400k conservative. He wants to play the market then we walk away and don't look back.

My Saints mate reckon Gresh is being played out of position as a high half forward/impact mid. Rates him more as a crumbing small, and that his snaps for goals are very good compared to his often average field kicking.

I'm not against it, but contract would need to be minimal. Depth of pressure smalls could be a point of difference for us next year. Hard to maintain the rage all season with pressure, and having lots of options could be a weapon.

We still need that high intensity, potent half forward.
Fog whilst serviceable, is a stop gap option. We need somebody who does the defensive stuff AND hits the scoreboard

We now have a banging list and a coach on the same path. Something I haven't seen for a long long time.

We currently sit 5th and some may say "a good chance at a premiership".

Growth in our younger guys such as Motlop, Kemp, Hollands, Dow, Cottrell, etc has had a huge bearing on where we currently find ourselves.

I say hit the draft with only 1 or 2 picks at most, a couple of Irish lads and do our best to hold our list together is what I'd very doing this year. No need for anyone via trade imo.

Loving what we currently have with so much more growth to come from this lot

Pencil in Zac Williams I reckon.

Further to this, I reckon that's exactly what the coaches will be thinking for 2024.

Newman, Weitering, Cincotta*
McGovern, Kemp, Saad
Hollands, Cripps, Acres
Pittonet, Cerra, Walsh
Williams, McKay, Martin
Motlop, Curnow, Owies
I/C: Doc, Hewett, TDK, Fogarty
Sub and Emergencies from: Kennedy, Silvagni, Cuningham, Cottrell, Fisher, Marchbank, Dow, Boyd, Durdin, Binns, Cowan

(*Cincotta could make way for Marchy if we like the height)

The Brett Ratten 2011 "growth from within" pathway
That went well..

Premiership teams are always continuing to do their list through sourcing trades. We should be learning lessons from the past and making sure we do the same

It's something to consider, but our list profile is very different to 2011, and we have just brought in 5 kids.

Need to go back all of one year to see that premiership sides sometimes have a year of consolidation.

Geelong won the flag in 2022. Only "notable" player movement for them coming into that season was swapping Fort for Ceglar (who then played 3 games), and picking up Stengle as a DFA.

Their draft haul was Conway (24), Knevitt (25), Willis (32), Kroeger (48) and Whyte (64).

It was essentially just one DFA free hit (which, to be fair, they nailed).

No evidence to suggest that we stagnate by having one off-season where we focus on nailing one or two draft picks, maybe taking a cheap free agent, and bringing in some Irish prospects. Our list is younger than Geelong's was, and has more scope for natural growth across the board.

I agree. Fog is great depth. I do wonder if Zac Williams can play this role. With his attributes and skill could hit up and damage opponents. We have the defense and midfield to give him that opportunity.

Not to mention Zac will fit well with the midfield stints at half forward as well. Have to praise Fog, he’s done his role so well since coming in. ZW’s kicking ability is very good and not to mention his vision. I’d be happy to trial him at half forward.

Although, I wouldn’t mind us creating more depth with another specialist half forward and a mobile ruck specifically. Like the draft pathway, especially if it’s heading towards being compromised in a few years, but would like us to bring in one senior body this off season in mentioned positions.

Not sold on Gresham, seems very inconsistent and a sort of "Ill put in effort when I feel like it". Too flaky for me and think our forward line is functioning well with Martin, Fog, Owies and the pressure they bring.

If Flanders is on the market I'd be very interested.

Well, yes...the Ratten pathway was going very well...until we had to tinker with a good thing.

Learning from lessons past would include the Malthouse lesson, the Thomas lesson, the Jaksch lesson, Vossy's Fev lesson, and the anyone supporting the recruitment of Gresham future lesson.
