Rumour from Sam Edmund on SEN says we are somewhat interested in H Crozier from dogs, potentially as a DFA

Hayden Crozier (Western Bulldogs)

“Another Western Bulldog, Hayden Crozier, who has fallen out of favour at the Whitten Oval in more recent times after crossing from Fremantle.
“Some interest from Carlton here. That might yet be as a delisted free agent. It’s hard to know what is going to happen there with Hayden Crozier who is out of contract at the end of the year.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Carlton pursue him a little bit further in the coming weeks and months.”

Same article as above ^^^^^^^

Elijah Hollands (Gold Coast)

“Highly likely to leave (the Suns).
“I think it is going to be Carlton. The Blues might have (Josh) Honey, (Lachie) Plowman, (Paddy) Dow and Ed Curnow leaving, and I’ve left a couple off there.

“There is an expectation they can nab Elijah Hollands with a future pick to satisfy Gold Coast. He was Pick 7 in the 2020 draft, he’s played only 13 games in that time.
“You’d have Carlton in the box seat without any guarantees.”

The Crozier rumour is a strange one, doesn't makes any sense as a back man but he did play as a forward at Freo and in junior footy? Cheap depth with a view to try and try him forward as a 3rd tall?

I reckon Crozier makes sense when you consider the profile of our list and the impending exits of Ed Curnow, Lachie Plowman, Paddy Dow and Zach Fisher.

If we can manufacture a list spot for Crozier as a very cheap DFA, he comes in to play a leadership role in the ressies, with the ability to step into the seniors if required (or just if form warrants it). I'd expect it to be a one year deal, so it's better for our list management strategy next year to have the flexibility to retire/delist him rather than have committed two years to a late draft pick in a shit draft.

Here are my tentative senior and reserves teams for next year:

2024 Seniors:
FB: McGovern, Weitering, Newman
HB: Williams, Marchbank, Saad
C: Acres, Cripps, O. Hollands
R: Pittonet, Cerra, Walsh
HF: E. Hollands, McKay, Martin
FF: Motlop, Curnow, [Owies/Durdin/Cottrell]
I/C: [Boyd/Kemp], Docherty, [Hewett/Kennedy] TDK
SUB: [Cottrell/Durdin]
(bolded names are the ones I think get the initial nod)

2024 Reserves:
FB: Kemp, Durdin, Cowan
HB: Cincotta, Young, Duffy
C: Binns, Kennedy, O'Brien
R: O'Keeffe, Cuningham, Carroll
HF: Monahan, Silvagni, Akuei
FF: Durdin, Lemmey, Fogarty
I/C: Mirkov, [Pick ~20], [cheap tall], [VFL player]

Who are the on-field leaders in the reserves, the ones who assist with directing and coaching the younger players throughout games? Particularly behind the play, making sure we're set up properly?

Crozier on a one year deal fills a leadership void, is more than capable of slotting into the senior side, has the right skill set we need in the short term (defends well, can kick), costs bugger all, and could potentially transition into some kind of developmental/football department role once the list moves past him as a need.

Played most of his Freo days as a forward. 187cm so is that perfect “mid” sized forward (or back)

Exactly what I was thinking, if he was a HFF option with his initial forward line experience.

Isn’t he a good user as well ?

Austin's eye for talent has been pretty good so far, and I am a big believer that players can often shine when placed in the right role at the right team.

So if it's a DFA I have no issue with Crozier

I feel like Elijah hollands is an acres type pickup

Will be a head scratcher for the suns for years to come I think. He’s got talent
acres was already established as a capable footballer before he came over not sure hollands is the same, much higher ceiling but more speculative.

Yeah and we need to remember it is not always about strengthening the best 22. It is about strengthening the squad. If we can upgrade a player in our existing group for no cost or get a player like crozier instead of taking pick 70 in the draft that's a win. It all helps us nudge forward.

What would we be prepared to give for Hollands. Hollands and 29(or 35) for 16?

For 29 I actually think that'd be fair depending on how we rate the draft. Hollands is worth an early to mid 2nd so it's like two mid 2nds for a late 1st. Suspect the suns would rather a pick next year though.

Yeah, that's my recollection too.

Quick look at Footywire has his disposal efficiency around the 77-83% range for the last 5 seasons.

He's not high production, but about a third of his possessions come from uncontested marks, so I'd suggest we'd maybe see him as back up for Boyd. Smart and hard runner who can be utilised to good effect in the switch of play as the second or third link in the chain.

Otherwise, as others have pointed out, he has played forward as well. Stats indicate more of a pressure forward than an avenue to goal, though. Not sure if he'd still have the athleticism for that kind of high intensity role though.

Remember all of those years where we would get torched by some lowly opposition player who turned up and put us to the sword? That’s what happens when you have an established core group and game plan. Those depth players can come into a scenario such as this and make a real difference. Especially when they have a defined and specific role. Perhaps they don’t make a difference on a weekly basis, but certainly here and there.

I know next to nothing about Hayden Crozier. But I do know that we now have the core group and the game plan where we can start to define fairly specific roles for journeymen type players to come in and make a difference. If Crozier is one we have identified, then good luck to him. He will be coming to a club which is invested in helping him succeed.

I struggle to see the benefit. HB and 30 next season. Not sure he adds anything. We have greater needs

Yes I'd say we'd be banking on some upside being suppressed at GC by being played out of position and also that he may have lost some zip/spring post ACL which can be rectified

His raw stats in his 5 games in 2022 seem pretty good 17 possessions and a goal a game. Think he is suffering from playing in a team with an unbalanced list profile.

Some talk that he is a one way runner. I think the younger brother will sort him out. Was a potential top 3 pick before doing his knee. While most good players have shown they have got it by their 3rd year I think he is definitely worth the punt.
