Given Labour are still up in Bundy as of yesterday and working their way down I wouldn't be surprised if they don't announce anything until Thursday or Friday when their focus is back down in SEQ.

2 days ago, the Labor Govt' committed $150,000 to Western Magpies AFC (matched by LNP). Chicken feed in comparison, but good dollars for local footy (on top of the same amount for Tarragindi FC and $75K for Souths Rugby) for field improvements. No doubt the Government will commit to Springfield now. As mentioned, LNP just got in their announcement first.

Not looking good. Don' think we'll hear anything before election. And whoever wins afterwards probably won' be that interested either.

Our best chance is to restart discussions with them next year once the politicians have sorted themselves out. It may take further compromise - e.g. AFL chipping in a bit more again.
LOL me. Not even 12 hours?

Geez I'm a lions fan and that video with Emerson was still cringe worthy to watch. God i dislike politicians.

You're just jealous that he is a bigger Dwayne Beans fan then you.

Ummmm... guessing we weren't thinking big enough?

A $350 million plan to transform a rural patch of Surf Coast farmland into a Victorian sports city is being considered by the State Government.

A 240ha site at Modewarre, about 24km south west of Geelong, has been earmarked for dramatic redevelopment that would see sports grounds, wave pools, medical centres, shops and luxury accommodation built in a bid to lure the world’s best athletes.

Plans to be released today estimate 500 full time jobs would be created building the sports and entertainment precinct that would include hotels, eco lodges, vineyards and tennis courts.

The Australia-first sports training, accommodation and tourism facility will include a football field likely to draw the attention of AFL teams as a practice facility.

It includes a variety of soccer pitches suitable for grassroots players and visiting professional teams.

Tennis courts would be targeted to the world’s best players jetting into town for the Australian Open.

Wave pools would be open to the public and turned over to professional surfers at the Rip Curl Pro for practice and when conditions are sloppy at Bells Beach.

The development, to be known as CORA (Cape Otway Road Australia), will be the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

It will cater to nine of the 10 most popular sports in Australia, with world-class fields for AFL, soccer, rugby, cricket and tennis and facilities for swimming, gymnastics, running and cycling.

It will offer four and five-star accommodation for athletes and tourists, a retail village, tourism precinct for visitors to the Great Ocean Road and an organic farm to provide premium produce for restaurants on-site.

Jon Stemp, managing director of project manager Proleisure, said it would draw global interest.

“In my opinion, CORA will have the world’s media talking about this project in Victoria and set a new global benchmark for sport and wellbeing,’’ he said.

It is expected about 1000 jobs would be created during the construction stage.

Environmental, cultural heritage, traffic and engineering tests have been carried out and a business case for the project is expected to go to the Andrews Government within weeks.

Backers say the major project would showcase the region’s natural assets, boost tourism, employment and Australia’s sporting fortunes.

The project is intended to be financed through a combination of private capital and infrastructure funding from the state and federal governments.

If approved, work is likely to start next year and be well advanced by 2020 when movers and shakers of the sporting world visit the region for the Tokyo Olympics.

I love my sport but I am disgusted that 350 million is proposed to be spent on such a project.

Such a huge sum of money could be transformational if re-directed towards social services.

True enough, but such a big community sports project could be transforming for social services itself, with broader reach.

I can't see the value of Labor committing funds to the project in such a historically safe seat of theirs prior to the election. LNP hoping to pinch a seat but its a big reach.

And that is what is wrong with politics - they do politically expedient things and not what is best for the people.
Can't wait for the revolution to a a brand new system - whatever it will be.

This is a serious question- just how the hell can a completely apolitical matter such as better football facilities for our Club attract one-sided political comment?

I've seen enough of various politicians up-close and personal, local, State and Federal to long ago have lost any semblance of hero worship, trust me [see Anastacia, mentioned above- anyone who has spent any time with her will come away completely underwhelmed. Just like her Dad. Don't know Tim, but I come away from the impression left by TV of "wrong bloke for the job"].

In my experience, there's good and bad on both sides of the political spectrum, mostly people who of their own free wills given up real family life, a totally unreal existence usually because they think they can do some good.

Money, which is what most attribute political ambition to, is way down the priority order, I reckon.

If one side or the other front up with the $$$ for Springfield, then who cares. Not me anyway

Since when is trying to secure Government funding "apolitical", particularly when commitments haven't been forthcoming until the last week of an election campaign. Not that the club or anyone here has made it political, the politicians have done that, by holding out.
I haven't seen any "hero worship" here either, just a few political opinions, but no trumpeting of how one side or the other is fantastic. So you're politically agnostic, that's nice, but anyone with a political opinion is going to make comment about what is a political announcement.
