I just don't get it! No matter which way Collingwood went, they were going to be wrong.
If we let him go-"Collingwood should have done more to keep him"
If we signed him-"Collingwood should have let him go"
Cant please everyone.
My opinion is that we have got not a good player but the BEST player of his position in the league.
He is 25yo and is in his prime (2 All Australians) and is only getting better.
If he hasn't already, he will change ruckwork. Not just a ruckman but a competitive midfield beast.
There are many great midfielders, many good forwards and backman. As for ruckman, we have the best in the game and people are bitching because we kept him!!!!!
Stop being so pessimistic and be grateful we have a star player, of great character, who wants and helps those around him be better and more importantly, wants to finish his career with our great club.
It is a good thing guys!! Let yourselves enjoy it, instead of trying to be negative.
Don't waste valuable time worrying about what may happen 5 or 6 years down the track. Enjoy the now and what comes, comes.
Go Pies.

would rather five years, but hay what’s an extra two years, but like apex said as long as the money is right, and that was the trade off for the extra years l can live with it.
We got the best ruck in the comp still, now we just have learn to take advantage of him.

exactly right - we need to get maximum advantage from his dominance.

With all respect as you’ve come here respectfully....

Nic Nat is another example of a 5 year plus deal not working out well

Well, I'd disagree. His injuries could have happened anytime - they're not age related which is the concern with a long-term contract. And even if he didn't make the Grand Final, he still played a big part in getting us there that season.

The devil will be in the detail on this one. On the surface I don’t like it (seriously he’s signed until he’s 33...), but if we’ve made it work to retain the other two I can accept that.
Seriously Sco the league's finest ruckman who also is contested possession winning freak and a 20 possession a game winner as a giant midfielder is simply unparalleled in this or any era.

Others were willing to offer $7M over 7 years so we had the choice placed before us of losing the player who may easily become an all time great and a hall of famer by saving a few bucks and returning to the barren years of second and third rate ruckmen.

Or manning up and accepting that every aspect of life involves risk.

Brodie Grundy is a premiership winning calibre ruckman - and almost a premiership winning calibre midfielder - you don't throw that away through being faint of heart.

Grundy down to Wills/Sier/Adams and out to Treloar/Penders/Crisp is an astonishing scenario - fitness allowing.

What the club urgently needs to do is to find viable options to take the load off his shoulders in the forward and backline - cut down the immense workload somewhat.

100% Agree,
This would make Grundy a nightmare for the opposition.

Its best not let the diversity of opinions on here bother you to much. Most are happy and comfortable with length of the contract. Grundy prepares very well and has every chance to play past 33 years.

There will be plenty here that will move past this announcement quickly and the Moore Degoey contracts will consume them with doubt and anxiety.

Enjoy it Pies, its a good day

Excuse the intrusion, but you haven't seriously got people questioning whether this is a good deal have you?

Even if you get 5 good years out of him = win.

Its a competition built around a salary cap. Fyfe may be the best midfielder in the comp but if you have to pay him 4 million per year then signing him would be a disaster

They started that with Bringing in Darcy Cameron

Great, great news. He is worth the contract and the risk.
Long term deals are in at the moment, and we are seeing a lot more of them. They need to be done if clubs expect to keep/gain elite talent.
Until this shifts back to shorter contracts, it is what it is.
Now if we can get DeGoey and Moore to follow, that will be a big win.
Can't wait to see Grundy have an even better year.

Its obviously awesome that Grundy has signed on - but your bolded is a complete furphy. Our clearance work as a midfield group, with the names listed, has been appalling. We ranked 14th for this stat in 2019.

There is nothing 'astonishing' about it, its where we need to improve most as a unit.

I don't have a problem with the length nor the 'reported' salary.

He is a very serious footballer in regard to preparation and his health, seems to do all the right things to keep himself in shape.

At times he is also an extra mid and surely based on history as he matures will get much better.

Toward the end of his contract can easily fit in on the forward line so we have 7 years to find a replacement ruck.

The one time I met him, he seemed very passionate about the club and I had doubts that he would leave.

I actually think we may have got him for unders based on the current market.

LP lets agree to disagree.

Of Course we would done things in this Contract so we in great shape to Retain De Goey and Moore

I don’t think you can simply assume that. I think it’s safe to assume that we’ve planned to be safe, but we wouldn’t have progressed far enough with the other two to be so definitive.

Can you tell us our midfield clearances.
Grundy murders the other rucks and with that amount of hit outs and being 14th.In clearance work.
Surely something is not working?

How do you know he’ll be the leagues best ruckman in 8 seasons time? That’s the real question. I don’t buy in on the individual only the output and I can 100% guarantee we won’t get 10 seasons of elite football out of Grundy (18-27). I also don’t care what other clubs were willing to offer because they’re irrelevant to our cap structure.

This is the last I’ll post on this topic because it’s an emotive one that some have an “at any cost” POV on so this is neither a good nor bad deal just one that we’ll understand better with time.

We should have put in his contract a clause that means he can’t play in any exhibition games.

yes I’m looking at you bushfire state of origin game.

7 years is bad enough deal, imagine if he rips his knee apart in this!
