Oppo Camp Brodie Grundy (Traded to Melbourne 2022)

Great to hear grundy kennedy and broomhead are great mates, should help them fit in really easily and quickly at the club and means they are far less likely to want to go home to adelaide (who would want to go to adelaide anyway?)

Probably because rucks are often the last piece of the puzzle and sides that are looking to can trade for one that is already developed at AFL level and playing good footy ala Jolly or Mumford. We have a very deep midfield and some excellent KPP, so we can afford to "take the best available" while other sides, especially lower sides, are looking to build the "engine room" of the midfield.

Will be interesting to see what happens now, suspect that the Pies did not expect to get him, so there will be more pressure on Lynch and Witts now than otherwise, and even Paine... really excited about the dynamic this brings to the ruck/forward set up, losing Dawes now looks like a bit of a master-stroke :)

Numbers add up for Brodie Grundy

TO understand Brodie Grundy you need to know these numbers: He's 18 years old, 202cm tall and weighs 100kg.
He's played less than 50 games of football in his life and had played only seven when Darel Hart added him to the state under-16 squad three years ago.
In two weeks time some are predicting he'll become the long-term replacement for Dean Brogan and Jon Giles at Greater Western Sydney when the Giants select him with one of the first three picks in the AFL National Draft.
To say it's been a rapid rise would be an understatement.
"I still haven't had anyone teach me how to ruck," Grundy says.

Pretty interesting article.
He could still be saying that in 5 years time if we stick with the same ruck department :p

Good article:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/148002/default.aspx

"Former Adelaide recruiter Matt Rendell, who did some specialist ruck coaching with the SA side at this year's under-18 championships, liked what he saw from the athletic ruckman, who earned All Australian honours for the second year running.

"He's clearly the best ruckman in the draft system at the moment," Rendell says.

"He's been really competitive playing against men in the SANFL after having a really good championships this year and last year as well.

"It will be interesting to see where he goes in the draft.

"You would think that Melbourne, the Bulldogs or GWS would be looking around for that type of player.

"He'll be in the top five or so, I would think."

The Demons' draft strategy largely depends on whether Gold Coast forces them to use the No.3 pick to secure father-son recruit Jack Viney.

If the Suns don't make a bid for Viney with the second selection overall, Melbourne can use its top two picks to make a play for one of highly-rated Western Australian pair Jack Martin or Jesse Hogan in the GWS mini-draft and snare Grundy as well.

That would leave the Demons to select Viney with their second-round pick, which is clearly the best-case scenario for the Dees.

Some clubs are hesitant to use such high draft picks on young talls, given the extra time they can take to develop into regular AFL players, but Rendell believes Grundy falls into the elite category of under-age ruckmen worthy of such early consideration.

"It didn't worry West Coast with Nic Naitanui did it?" he says.

"It didn't worry Carlton with Matthew Kreuzer. I've got no doubt [he can be in that company] - he influences games.

"He virtually won two games for South Australia last year at the 18s as a bottom-ager and he was really good this year again as expected.

"He's not going to be the traditional four years [of development] - he's going to be ready to go pretty quickly because he's physically not far behind [the men].

"I'd be surprised if he didn't make an appearance in his first year, which is unusual for a ruckman. Kreuzer did, Naitanui did and I would think he would too."

Grundy played eight senior games for SANFL club Sturt this year, in addition to his starring role with the SA team, with his best performance 31 hit-outs against Glenelg.

"Brodie's a really competitive beast," Rendell says.

"He trains really well. He thinks about his footy all the time, maybe a bit too much sometimes, but he's a really good kid.

"His tap work is good - I wouldn't say it's great - but every time he goes forward he kicks goals. He might not quite have that silk touch with his hands with his tap work as yet, but that will come the more he plays and he's very good on the ground.

"He trains really hard so he'll definitely get the best out of himself and he's a real competitor, so he's at first base already."

Sounds like he'll be a dial-a-quote throughout his career. :D

Really like the sound of him being a competitive fella, it's an aspect of rucking that can't be taught.

Guess we got lucky with other teams having decent ruck depth, and, a top 10 pick is a hell of a lot to pay for a ruckman, history says the majority of those who take a ruckman with a high pick end up regretting it, rucks are probably the hardest to judge of all the players, seeing how most of them don't fully develop until their mid 20s and some mature faster than others but don't have much improvement left, (like many dominant junior rucks) hence why a lot of dominant AFL rucks weren't rated very highly as juniors.

Very happy with this guy though, looks a very well rounded player.

To understand how good Grundy is you need to see him play.
When he rucks against kids his own age it's almost unfair.
In an under-18 game against Glenelg this season he finished with a stat line most ruckmen would be happy with for two matches - 33 disposals, 49 hit outs and five goals.

Would love to watch the tape of that game. So happy he got to our pick, Hine could hardly read out his name he was so thrilled. :p

Sam Landsberger said he's further developed than Witts already. I don't get to any VFL games so I don't know but he looks the goods. Really looking forward to seeing these two competing with each other for a spot in the team. I hope it drives them both to bigger and better things.
That's not surprising though if he's played state level U18's two seasons running and seniors in the SANFL. Witts hasn't had that amount of exposure and what he has had has been hampered by Shae Mac, Ceglar and Wood stinking it up in the middle.

How good an outcome is this for the club?

Grundy>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Currie/Seaby/Stephenson/Hannath or any number of other ruck suggestions tiresomely bandied about the last two months.

It is hindsight but we knew what we knew what we were doing delisting wood and ceglar.

How stoked was Hine? I didn't see the draft live but then again Hine shows no emotion. Bucks would be stoked.

well that makes the wood/shae/ceglar delist seem all the more genius.
did hine know we would get him?
Nah, but I'd say we were going to take the best remaining ruckman with one of our first three picks, and it was a bonus that the best ruckman in the whole draft just happened to slip to us.

Out of interest, who was the next best rated ruck behind Grundy?

That tall white awful skinny man McBean who no doubt will turn out to be another David Fanning, Guy Richards

Another tall half-forward flanker come ruckman. I'll believe it when I see it.

Really wanted us to take this kid at 9 instead of Vanilla Vlastuin. Tall of the draft for mine and a steal at 18. Nice score ....ya bastards....:(

Do i remember correctly he stumbled and splattered when he was reading out pick 18? Couldn't get the damn numbers out quick enough hiney :D.
Good thing he was quick or those pesky guys with pick 19 might of pounced.
