I think the team’s a good one and always thought Martin was 50/50 at best having missed 3 games.
His averages this year of 23.6 touches, 1.25 goals and 7.7 score involvements were not much different to 2019 in H&A when he averaged 26.1, 1.3 goals, 7.3 score involvements and 4.3 clearances and also missed the team. (He finished 6th in Brownlow and 12th in coaches votes in 2019).
So 2019 I thought was a very unlucky omission, but 2023 after 3-games missed could have gone either way.
I don’t think he was any more unlucky than Weitering, Andrews or Libba. In fact if I had to say who was unluckiest I’d say Libba - sometimes I wonder how much footy the selectors watch … Libba was a freak this year with his clearance work and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s leading Dogs B&F before his concussion.

Yeah that’s way crazier than individual assessment being decided by something determined by 44 players.
You think the Norm Smith Medal is determined by 44 players? Then AA selection is determined by 700 players by that logic.

For whatever reason over time some players and/or teams get the ‘rub of the green’ and other don’t.
This year of the top-15 players for coaches votes only one missed the AA squad. Taranto.
And of the top-15 in overall player ratings only one player missed the squad. Shai Bolton. (He was also 25th in coaches votes).
Nick Blakey played all 23 games and had a player rating of 13.07 to Stewart’s 11.79. Blakey was instrumental in Sydney making finals whilst Geelong fell away really badly. Watching Sydney you see Blakey is an absolute attacking weapon with his withering runs out of the backline. Stewart also missed effectively 2 games.
Don’t get me wrong, I think either player was a worthy selection, but for whatever reason Stewart gets the nod over Blakey, as he got the nod over Sicily last season.

Yes it’s quite strange how a supporter base can spend a fortnight telling anyone who will listen that one of their players will make the AA team and then when he doesn’t, a thread specifically about that player gets a lot of responses. It really is a case of ‘rent free’ isn’t it. That’s the internet buzzword I would use. I wouldn’t at all use ‘when you flog yourself over something that hasn’t happened yet, and then it doesn’t happen, people tend to shit on you for it.’
No. I’d use ‘rent free’ to try and take some focus off the fact that the prediction made by all the tigers fans didn’t happen

I didn’t think you’d get sucked into the baiting and posting here again. You’re normally one of the better Geelong posters that I’ve come across.
If you don’t like the term ‘rent free’ then ‘obsessed’, ‘fixated’ and ‘consumed’ are all good alternatives. All good descriptors for those that wait for something to happen in the comp and then relate it back to Dustin Martin.
You may be more old school and prefer those terms, and I respect that too. But it infers the same as ‘rent free’ because it seems like Martin is in their head.
And it seems is back in yours?
Congrats on Tom Stewart getting another AA btw. Well deserved. Hopefully this achievement hasn’t been forgotten by some cats fans in their rush to post about Dusty not making the team. But I’m not holding my breath.

In any social or discussional setting people will hold and exchange views that they agree or disagree on.
When someone is especially vocal about that view, and with it comes predictions and ‘wait until this happens’ statements and so forth, to go back to that person or persons and say ‘well what the f**k happened to you certain prediction’ is not a sign of an athlete living ‘rent free’ in one’s head. It’s a sign that you paid attention to something someone predicted

While at the same time, Dusty averages more brownlow votes per game than GAJ, statistically, he is the 6th best player in home and away games in history as far as when it comes to brownlow voting

I don’t actually think there were many posts with Tiger fans saying he was any sort of certainty to make AA. Lots of references to Hoyney saying he ‘should’ be a lock, but I don’t think many Tiger fans were expecting it or commenting it was a likely outcome.
Maybe you can point me to Tiger fans saying ‘Martin is going to be AA’, as not sure that was happening other than referencing to external commentators who said he should be in. Maybe I missed some posts about it?

Tom Stewart seems to get you pretty ‘triggered.’
I find Stewart's last two selections perplexing to be honest. I have never looked at the 3 times he was selected prior to that, but these last two don't look right to me.
This year they did not select a second key defender to go with Darcy Moore. Sam Taylor in the 15 matches he played seemed to be the best key defender in the AFL by miles, especially when you account for him going off the ground injured early in two of those matches. Haris Andrews had a higher rating season than Stewart and Weitering also had a worthy season. How one of those 3 players wasn't picked so they could squeeze in 3 hybrid defenders is laughable. There are the bare 6 defenders picked, 1 key, 3 hybrids and 2 running defenders.
You look to the other end and there are 7 forwards selected, 3 of those specialist key forwards. So the selectors obviously think a footy team needs 3 specialist key forwards but only one specialist key defender.
I would love someone to explain what exactly Conor Rozee is doing on a forward flank over Dusty. If they want to select just the players they think have had the 22 best seasons in the AFL then that is what they should do, and not worry about positions. If they want to select players based on positions played then that is what they should do, select the players who have proven best in their positions/roles. Or here is an idea, maybe do both. At one end of the ground Tom Stewart is about the 80th rated player in the AFL and is selected amongst an unnecessary 3 hybrid defenders. At the other end Shai Bolton is the 12th highest rated player in the AFL(to have played at least 15 matches) can play midfield or forward, and does not even get in the squad. But the overall trend towards Geelong players in AA selections stretches the credibility of this AA process. The club has played roughly 6% of the eligible matches this century. And has roughly 35% of the top 20 most selected players in the AA team. Even allowing for the fact they have been the best performing home and away team in the competition in that time, something is way wrong for that to happen. Dangerfield is not near the best 3 players this century. Stewart, Hawkins, Scarlett and Enright are not near the best 20 players in the AFL this century. Selwood is not near the best 8 or so players. Ablett Jnr is probably the only one of them whose AA selections come close to accurately reflecting where he stands amongst AFL players this century. The AA selection panels are asking us to believe these are 7 of the best 20 footballers the AFL has seen this century.
The whole thing needs to be re-thought or just laughed off for what it is, a reason for 10 AFL "A" listers to get together and select their 22 favourite players in a team that would be well beaten by a properly constructed team with second ruck, pressure forward, 7 defenders, etc etc.
