Ms Thorpe, the first Aboriginal woman to be elected to the Parliament of Victoria, believes Indigenous groups and the state government should consider the idea during treaty talks.

It's not an impossibility, but either way won't get much popular support.

Canada broke up a province called Northwest Territories and renamed a portion Yukon and then Nunavut, so it's not exactly a far fetched idea.

That'll fix the disturbingly high rates of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Indigenous communities.

Think we have a lot of problems with the Hawthorn song and the Yankee Doodle offensive connotations.

Also the Brisbane Lions/Fitzroy song which is the French National Anthem (Those Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys)

Also Port Magpies Prison Bars has offensive Penal Colony/Captain Cook connotations.

Seriously this thread belongs on the Bay.

You said Penal..

Hrr Harr Gnarrr!

With Cancel Culture becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society, for example Colonial Beer being pulled from shelves, I’m quite surprised that there hasn’t been more scrutiny surround what some would perceive to be the racial undertones in both the Carlton or Collingwood club songs.

Everyone knows the famous line “Oh the premierships a Cakewalk” in Collingwood's song but do people really know where the term Cakewalk comes from? It dates back to the days of slavery in the US. Slaves on plantations would be made to dance in a competition with the winner being awarded a cake.

The origins of the Cakewalk dance were African-Americans plantation slaves taking the piss out of their white masters by imitating and exaggerating their waltz dancing styles. I guess you could say they culturally appropriated our dances. Ohh the outrage!

I'm not saying they should be forced to change, it's just more of a question will cancel culture come after this? I'm just thinking about some of the stuff that's been canceled, like Colonial beer for instance which is wayyyy over the top, but I'd think in the eyes of the cancel culture people these two examples are "worse" than some of the other stuff that's being targeted.

I think the fact that you have to go digging for the meanings, it will never get any attention. As opposed to coon cheese which, although not of racist origin, is right there in your face.

Instead of the St.Kilda Saints, we should have the Southern suburbs Non-demoninational Do-gooders so non-Christians aren't offended.

"The Blues" is offensive slang for chronic depression so could be harmful to those suffering from mental illness.

"The Suns" maybe be offensive for alien beings outside of our solar system on planets which orbit multiple stars

may seem silly, but in the NBA (some years back) the washington Bullets changed to the Wizards as the image of violence in a city plagued by crime was deemed unacceptable.
That wasn't the reason. It was because the owner of the Bullets was a close friend of Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated with a gun, and he didn't want to keep being reminded of that every time he heard the team name.

Of course, he then chose "Wizards" as a replacement, which was an odd choice considering Washington DC is mostly black, and the head of the KKK is called the Grand Wizard.

Wizard is a common enough term though without the KKK connotations.

The more contentious thing would be Washington Redskins still being the Redskins. There isn't any ambiguity about the racial connotation of that one.

St.Kilda actually changed their colours in War time as reminded people of the time, too much of Germany.

Are Christians allowed to support Melbourne, seeing as they are the Demons ?

That is the problem sometimes. These things need to be addressed but it is super hard to address them without being labeled racist. Of course I suspect it is partly down to a large amount of Aboriginal people living in rural and poor areas. Those two factors are usually strong contributors to domestic violence as well. The level of domestic violence in the poorer areas of Western Sydney is disturbing as well.
