Isn't Gresham's younger brother a NGA for us next year?

Tyson Gresham is 2007 born, so a 2025 draft prospect. Tyson Gresham

Currently playing in the U-16 National Carnival for Vic Metro according to the Inside Trading article on the AFL website today: Giant starts talks, rivals circle Bomber, clubs eye Dogs ruck

Tyson Gresham (22 disposals, two goals against Western Australia on Tuesday), the younger brother of St Kilda star Jade, was another to catch the eye while playing as a smart small forward.

Doesn't mention our NGA, however I believe he is part of the system, can anyone confirm?

These suburbs aren't really multicultural anymore and the demographic is overwhelmingly becoming either wealthy and old, or wealthy with very young kids, neither of which is particularly helpful for these purposes. Then , lots of the kids who are in the correct age bracket attend private schools. Thornbury heading in same direction. It's a terrible area to be given for these purposes imo. Amazing place to live though!

It would be good if it was easier to actually find information on eligibility for NAB league teams, if its based on residential location, then attending a private school somewhere else shouldn’t matter.

The suburbs you highlighted all have large numbers of social housing and still have a very diverse population regardless of the cost of housing.

My two boys are eligible for our academy in about 13 years due to their mum being from Asia, our area has a very large Asian population, their school class is filled with kids with Turkish, Lebanese, Asian back grounds, all of which qualify.

Our area is quite affluent, I hope you weren’t implying that because those areas are now expensive that they aren’t multicultural?

I can tell you why that's the case for cricket...... Having seen and been involved extremely first hand until a few years ago..... All of the under age pathways are dominated, and I mean absolutely dominated by bias - U/17s state teams chosen by the coach who happens to play at a grade club where most of the players get chosen from, then there's the racism that extends through the pathways to the grade clubs etc. In pre season where indian, Pakistani etc players often struggle to get into grade clubs in the first place. These get compounded by the selection policies of Klinger (for NSW) where they heavily bias players who went through these political, nepotistic pathways and ignore the 24 year old who has peeled off 5 grade centuries because he never played for NSW U/17s.

Anyways..... Nsw doing its best to make a cricket heartland angry.

So if Essendon are doing that I fully.understand and wouldn't mind more of it tbh.

Rant over.

It’s not a rant and a lot of it is just human behaviour, I’m sure it is the same across all industries not just sport.

NGAs are supposed to be like football evangelism; introducing kids and talent (and communities) to footy that otherwise wouldn't get the exposure.

From the AFL's website: The program is targeted at Multicultural and Indigenous communities who may not have as much opportunity to be involved in football programs, or who have limited understanding of the game and how it is played.

I don't think Jesse Motlop - whose dad/uncles played 400+ AFL matches - or the son of Andrew Walker needs the NGA to learn about footy or to get involved in the sport.

I LOVE the idea of introducing footy and giving a pathway for immigrant / multicultural / indigenous kids. But if the eligibility rules are so simple it ends ups being a modern version of zoning - just based on parent's language and skin colour criteria as well as address.

I’m trying to wrestle two kids while my partner is out so I don’t have the quotes on hand but the NGA framework also talked about providing pathways for demographics that are under represented in the AFL.

As far as I remember the NGA zones were a sweetener to drip clubs complaint about the QLD and NSW academies.

I live and work in the bolded areas, kids go to school there. You’re right about the social housing but it feels an increasingly tiny bit of the community.

And yeah, I was implying that inner city suburbs have become less multicultural as they’ve become wealthier. Whatever my personal misgivings about that might be, I don’t think the change in demographics is up for debate unfortunately, particularly from Northcote in. At any rate, we are recent arrivals to the inner north, and it ain’t multicultural compared to further north or west or the outer east.

On the other hand, from the prospects themselves, why wouldn't the likes of Motlop or Walker take the chance to get involved in NGA academies and get more focussed training provided by AFL clubs? Not necessarily as a pathway to the AFL for obvious reasons, but just as a way of being in the AFL system and development early.

It's not what the program is for from either side, club or kid, but if you had access to AFL clubs why wouldn't you take it.

Interesting list from Hun today regarding top under 16 prospects.. it's just a list of GC/Sydney/GWS/Brisbane academy players

On one hand, I could see how that's annoying/unfair for Vic clubs, however on the other, it shows the academies are working in growing the game interstate and developing interstate talent.

When, ever, has a top 20 list had so many interstate players? That's a great thing. Being tied to the clubs though is debatable, but it's a great step towards a better national game.

It’s about time I reckon they make academy prospects open slather in the first round or remove the discount altogether and still enable academy’s to pick their players at full price

And that includes NGA

There’s an advantage still for academy players forced interstate, allows clubs to target the homegrown talent and bring them home like all clubs do now

The discount should be removed for F/S and academies. Clubs can still have the right to them but they have to actually pay for them, not just load up of 4th round picks.

I just checked and for the first time in ages the Knights are top of the table which is a bonus, no idea of the multicultural make up of the side though.

I mentioned to another poster that Essendon are trying to have more say over who makes the Calder squad as they think certain types of players are being overlooked.

The Knights area goes quite a distance out, there are kids from Bundoora, South Morang, Montmorency, Preston on the list, lots of these areas have young families.

Even after all this talk on this thread, the eligibility criteria isn’t that clear, if you’re indigenous or African it seems straight forward but the Asian component and the language diverse component doesn’t have clarity.

Remove discount on F/S and academy players

Wherever another club bids, affiliate club needs to match the total points
I don’t like this after the concessions every man and his dog have got and our turn is coming up over the next 5 years. We need to cash in first.

Yeah, would suck for us, but it's probably the right move. And it would be just like the AFL to make the change before we get the benefit!!

Perhaps a concession:
0% discount for Round 1
10% for Round 2
normal 20% for Round 3+

Guess that's an offshoot discussion but they would need to give clubs a minimum of 2 years notice

Next year we have the Campo boys, so much of our trading this year will impact future picks, to hedge our position. Same for all clubs that have f/s and academy picks

Having said that, the AFL do make some strange decisions

You’d think so but this is the AFL..rules on the fly.
Some top-rated F/S gems would be greatly appreciated (with the reduced draft capital), the calibre of BL’s recent haul will do just fine.
