They showed the forward line tackles stat early in the game; Carlton had about a handful whereas we had none. It's unacceptable, and it can't only be due to McCarthy and Cockatoo being out.

I find it hard to blame the forward line that much other than Hawk who desperately needs to get up the ground when the midfield is playing like rubbish and Mots who just lost the plot.

Gregson and Kersten tried hard all day, Smedts did the most you can ask from limited chances but probably could've been better defensively, Lang went missing and could've been better defensively too but it's up to more senior players to stand up in a game like todays.

Yes, the "it's our responsibility to fix" approach by Scott is not working and is probably even counter-productive. Time for a video edit to be sent to the head of umpiring. We are getting the rough end of the pineapple big time.
Scott said 6 weeks ago about our ill discipline that it's a Geelong problem...Nice to see he fixed that.

I think Scotty has to say something about the umpiring now, yes the go nice might work sometimes but this is getting beyond a joke.

Carlton outplayed us today, pure and simple, they were hungry, and worked harder.

It's up to the players what happens from here, they are 7 - 3 and have an opportunity to create something special. They can't afford an effort like today. Especially 2 weeks in a row.

Too simplistic to say we missed McCarthy and Cockatoo today? The pressure they applied in our forward line in the first 6-8 weeks of the season was first class. Without them running around, opposition sides are just waltzing the ball out of our forward line.

Might make Heath Shaw my SC captain next week. With the lack of pressure we put on their half backs today, he'll have a field day.

Positives:
-Henderson easily our best defender again. Very composed and one of our better intercept marks at present.
-Guthrie in the last 1/4. Drifted in/out of the game before then, but credit to him for picking himself up off the canvas and limiting Gibbs' influence.
-Smedts' effort and appetite for the contest is there, even if his disposal lacks
-Stanley good in the ruck and did some decent things around the ground

Negatives:

-Motlop needs to be dropped. Poor body language, indecisiveness, and lack of discipline emphases that he just doesn't care right now.
-Kolodjashnij is nothing but a glorified witches hat. Our lack of speed down back when he's in the side in painfully obvious.
-Midfield's workrate wasn't up to scratch. Selwood ineffective, whilst Caddy/Duncan drifted in and out of the game and simply weren't there when we needed them. Clearances say it all.
-Tackling pressure would have to be amongst the worst in the AFL. The regularity in which Carlton navigated their way through contests with ease and handpassed to loose players out the side of packs made me age about 10 years. Whilst it improved in close during the second half, Blues players were still allowed to get clear too easily.
-Been a big defender of Hawkins, but not good enough today. Even with a lack of support from crumbers and the likes of Kersten/Stanley/Smith creating a spoil, his movement and overhead ability was poor. Kersten barely sighted either.
-Blicavs disgraceful, and not happy with Scott for taking 3/4 to move Guthrie onto Gibbs

Time for a Bex and a lie down

Reckon there'll be a lot of emotional, knee jerk posting here shortly.

Once that settles down, we might get some good dissection and analysis of what is wrong with us.

What!!
Do you mean knee jerk reaction like this.......

The club really has to start making some noise with the ump's dept.

Find out what's going on, match what the other clubs are paying, whatever it takes.....

Well those 2 losses will cost us top 4 and any realistic shot at a flag, not that I think we would have won anyway.

To me Carlton deserved it more and wanted it more, we weren't hard enough or polished enough.
The loss showed up the same weaknesses we have had for a while (despite our wins).

1. There are too many days our midfield isn't hard enough at the contest-I think it's attitude not personnel
2. We cannot lock down an opposition midfielder-Scooter is the solution to this and he's injured but geez our coaches could at least try somebody in this role-trying is better than not.
3. We choke too much in front of goal especially in games we should win-this has to be partly skills but we also need to look at changing players, you can't continue to have a forward half that misses this many shots.
4. Teams score far too easily over the back against us once they beat our initial press-this is partly about the players applying better pressure to a man and sticking tackles (we had so many broken tackles today), but gee it would help if we didn't play 4 KPD's.
5. We can't generate enough run off half back-this is partly workrate as we do it ok when our mids work back to give the defenders more options, but again we play too tall back there and it affects this.

And Motlop needs to be dropped for poor discipline-if we let SJ go for poor on field discipline and selfishness (which I agree with if that was the reason) we can't not drop Motlop for the same thing. Yes I understand he is a gun and it may cost us wins in the next month, but the principle is more important-you can't have young players learning that you behave like a kid playing under 10s when it doesn't go your way. He needs to go back to the vfl and not be brought back until he can go a whole game without giving away an undisciplined free or ducking an opportunity to chase and tackle. Whether that's one week or six weeks is entirely up to him. Hopefully he is suspended for that stupid hit so it takes out the possibility the coaches won't do it.

Shining lights for me were Gregson and Stanley and Henderson, but not much else.

Changes
Out: Motlop (suspension/omit), Kolo (team balance), Murdoch
In: McCarthy, Bews, Menzel

If Stanley is injured Vardy will come in but if thats the case our season is done as Vardy isn't a good enough replacement.

Smedts won't last very long I don't think once we have more front half options.

What the hell happened to us in between the Adelaide game and now? Our gameplan of winning clearances and locking the ball in our forward half has fallen to pieces. Are Nakia and Linc that sorely missed? A lot of guys need to have a serious look at themselves regarding effort. Second week running where Sel and Danger have been down and our second-tier have not stood up. Duncan and Guthrie were okay but Caddy, Motlop, Murdoch and Blicavs were useless. Kersten's gone back to his magician's routine, specialising in the disappearing act. Our defense was under siege and could barely break even in a contest. I am so beyond sick of seeing the opposition get an easy chip pass from 55 out to find a free guy closer to goal. Happens at least twice every game - it's coming into the 50, there's no good marking space - guard you're freaking man!

With those two out, we need to rejig our F50 system.
A CHF might be a good idea.

Shades of '06. Have a few good wins, get labelled premiership favourites, then the season turns to shit as the players start to believe their own hype.

Two weeks in a row we've been beaten by a more focused team who showed a far better work-rate, while we're relying on far too few players.

I'm fine with that if the next 5 years pan out similarly ;)

Discipline doesn't just revert back to the old free kick against statistic.

How about our players lack of discipline in chasing and tackling and being accountable... that's non existent as well.
