List Mgmt. Carlton Draft 2021

Think people are going to be very disappointed if they expect us to be active tonight.

We've said we're taking just the one pick and we've said we're content to pick where we're currently sitting.

I don't know how people see that and equate it to "oh we should be trading into the top 10 by giving up next year's first".

We may be active at the start of night two with reports suggesting there are a few teams keen to trade into the draft early in the second round, but my guess is we'll barely be sighted tonight.
I hope so, it would be disappointing if we deviate from the plan - i.e. being quiet on the ND this year and load up next ND
We've got what we needed from this trading period - now just lock in a decent young player at #25 and job done :D

Tigers have said they will trade pick 15 to the highest bidder.. What would be an acceptable trade?? Sounds like they are not interested in picks from this year, so would a future 2nd get it done..
They're trying to trade up this year with 15 and one of their later picks. Not trade into next year.

Some thoughts/considerations

Don't mind Macdonald, but have at least 5-10 others ahead of him, so trading back to improve our hand next year makes sense.

Perhaps Tigers 28, future 3rd = Carlton 25

If we are looking to move forward in the draft, these could be options

Lions 18, future 1st = Carlton 25, future 1st

Tigers 15, future 1st, 2nd = Carlton 25, future 1st, 2nd

Either way, think there will be a higher level of pick swaps this year across all clubs

On the contrary might want additional picks next year to trade for a ready made defender.
Got a gut feel we’ll have more access in next year's draft, there may well be list changes end 2022. Dow ,Gov. Setterfield and a few others treading on thin ice if they don’t produce some better performances in 2022 , they may be moved on.

I am yet to see anyone suggest we trade a future 1st, that would be crazy in this years draft however if there was a way to get another pick in the top 30, but trading a future 2nd that would be a reasonable result, provided there are players of interest to Austin around this mark. Its not picking for picking sake but considering we have barely played any of our draft picks from the past 2 years, I am concerned we will leave a hole in our list in 6-7years time if we dont at least have a crack.

I think the point remains regardless of whether you're talking about a future first or a future 2nd. We want a greater presence in next year's draft compared to this year's draft and that presence will extend beyond the first round.

i can appreciate people want to have greater presence in drafts because it's exciting to bring kids into the club, but what you are suggesting literally goes against everything the club has been suggesting they will do.

Hence my comment not to expect us to be active.

With regards to a "hole in our list in 6-7 years" I'd say that's obviously being overly dramatic. A big gaping hole isn't going to develop just because we don't trade into the first round this year.

Sure we haven't seen as much of the players we've drafted over the past two years, but there's a good chance 3-4 of them are in our best 22 come the end of the year.

So that means MacDonald will be a top 20 player in years to come?
Who knows, since when has drafting been certain?

MacDonald might bust, such is the nature of things.

I try not to get too caught up in guessing ultimate outcomes from the draft and look at the upside of who we end up with.

Worrying about Talia vs Lucas is not going to make anything better

Gunna be interesting fer sher.

These Victorian guys haven’t played solid footy in 2 years & age 15 through 18.....put it this way, I played on a wing at 14 and was ruck at 16.

Development is utter crucial.

Go the talls & put the work into them.

ed: and no more bloody hbfers, we’ve got 15 of them

Pretty sure we're drafting a small defender

Exactly, there are no certainties, otherwise the number 1 pick is always the best player or players are selected in order that reflects their career output. It never happens and no recruiter has an unblemished record. So Cats or any other side moving ahead of us or picking a player we may like, means little, as talent is there at every pick

We aren't discussing or debating past drafts here, comparing the Talia's versus the Lucas's, we are discussing the merits of players prior to the event

I still have destinct memory of the (09) Lucas, Davies, Kerr (10) Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes (11) Bootsma, Rowe, Buckley (12) Menzel, Temay, Graham (13) was good with Cripps, Curnow & Bell but then (14) Boekhurst, Viojo-Rainbow, SMith, Foster..

Missing badly 5 years out of 6 in the draft is undoubtedly why we have found ourselves in the position of mediocrity for so long.. I am scared we are repeating history (16) SPS, Fisher, McReadie, Polson, Willow hard to give this a tick on form (17) Dow, LOB, TDK could end up great could end up puss... (18) Walsh & Stocker is already a pass, (19) Kemp, Phillip, Ramsey far from guaranteed as a pass, (20) Dudin & Carroll, who knows but i would say its unlikely to deliver much fruit and (21) with only 1 pick at pick 25 its a huge gamble... Based on this, we are very much likely to have missed 5 years out of 6 and the cycle will continue..

Well what I was trying to say is that MacDonald is not such a reach, as others have suggested, as other clubs are looking at him.

The whole idea that I'm suggesting perfect knowledge of player future was your introduction.

Positional needs.

KPD We need to replace Jones
Wing/ outside mid. We don't have a proven winger, I see 1 wing as a rotation for our mids, e.g walsh, cerra. We lack in this area.
HFF/ Midfielder. Not sure Durdin or Fisher will be anything but small forwards. Honey a general forward. Many of our mids lack the skillset to play forwrard.

My ideal picks within our draft range.

1. Butler (I think is the most likely to be gone)
2 Warner (likely to be available and has a role available as outside mid)
2 Alleer (Jones replacement and probably the most upside out of anyone in the draft)
4 Taylor (fills that mid forward role, upgrade on Fisher IMO)

Not interested in McDonald. Admittingly my viewing is limited, I just don't think we need that style of player. Happy to be proven wrong though.

I hope we get a winger. Josh Sinn, Wilmot and Chesser are great players who would fit that need but they'll all go in the first round. Someone like Blake Howes would be great for us, but I see Melbourne selecting him with pick 19.

Matty Johnson and Josh Goater look likely to slide but I doubt they'll get to our pick 27. Jesse Motlop would be my preference after that but North are looking to select him with pick 22. Will be interesting to see if we actually end up going with MacDonald as rumoured.

Conner has ability but a few flaws as most of these youngsters do.
Importantly his mental attitude is on point , quite determined to develop the natural footy ability he has and that’s half the battle won. So if Nick selects him, I’ll support the decision totally.
In general the best midfielders will be long gone by p25, unless we’re extremely lucky, Id rather a Jesse Motlop if available whom will apply forward pressure and magic to loose ground balls, kick goals at the feet of our talls.

I still don't get it

If say 4 clubs see MacDonald at pick 20 and all the others at pick 35, he would still be considered a reach, no?

I guess the best way I could describe MacDonald being selected by us in the 2nd round, I wouldn't be disappointed, but that there might be better prospects

Bulldogs seeking points... quick win... 25 + 63 = 868 points, for their 23 (815), basically throwing them a free early 4th rounder. They can then use the 25 to get even more points elsewhere.
Looks like there is a 3-way deal with Geelong and Norf for Dogs pick 23 (according to Twomey).

makes a bit of sense to do it. Just wondering if we might be able to get something a little better from them if they are needing it for Darcy.
