List Mgmt. Carlton Draft 2021

I still think Goater is in range for us if we stick with pick 25 (probably 27 at that point). Hawthorn, Sydney and Freo are the dangers, but I think we can make a trade if he gets past Sydney, maybe even trade with them.
I think he’ll be long gone but if he was available I couldn’t call his name out quick enough.

Looking at those available, i hope we consider Conway.. best ruck in the draft seems a steal at pick 27, especially considering our current ruck stocks. Mac Andrews is being highly rated, yet in the Vic Metro v Country game highlights, Conway destroys Andrews at every center clearance. and just seen these and is far more mobile around the gound than many give him credit for.. To me looks like a proper old school ruck..

It makes no sense not to allow Carlton the open list spot that would enable a pick split to take an extra player. Other clubs would in no way be negatively impacted, in fact the club (which could be any of the other 17 clubs) agreeing to give two later picks for an earlier pick would be to their benefit.
The inflexibility on the part of the AFL, in a fairly unique situation, is puzzling and benefits no-one, least of all the fans!

The AFL's (official) thinking is that vax deadlines are diff in diff states. Hypothetically WCE could have a player retire in Jan.

If Carlton get to replace Jones in the draft, WCE won't be able to replace theirs.

So the AFL's answer is that no one gets to replace at the draft.

I don't like it, but I get it.

I still have destinct memory of the (09) Lucas, Davies, Kerr (10) Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes (11) Bootsma, Rowe, Buckley (12) Menzel, Temay, Graham (13) was good with Cripps, Curnow & Bell but then (14) Boekhurst, Viojo-Rainbow, SMith, Foster..

Missing badly 5 years out of 6 in the draft is undoubtedly why we have found ourselves in the position of mediocrity for so long.. I am scared we are repeating history (16) SPS, Fisher, McReadie, Polson, Willow hard to give this a tick on form (17) Dow, LOB, TDK could end up great could end up puss... (18) Walsh & Stocker is already a pass, (19) Kemp, Phillip, Ramsey far from guaranteed as a pass, (20) Dudin & Carroll, who knows but i would say its unlikely to deliver much fruit and (21) with only 1 pick at pick 25 its a huge gamble... Based on this, we are very much likely to have missed 5 years out of 6 and the cycle will continue..

There is a bit to unpack here.

1) Yes the 2009 - 2014 drafts do not make for pretty reading. Is it the reason why we now find ourselves where we are? It may be a reason, but it is not the reason. I dare say most people acknowledge it is not a lack of talent on the list that is holding us back.

2) If you were to assess each club in the same manner most would get a fail. There are few instances of a club nailing each pick in a draft, and even fewer of a club doing so over multiple consecutive drafts. The reality is there is a lot more to it than what you have put forward.

3) We haven't "missed" 5 years out of 6 nor is it "very much likely". At this stage there doesn't look like any of the drafts you have put forward (2017 - 2020) are complete misses - there are player(s) in each draft who

4) Why no mention of the 2015 draft? We hit the jackpot there and they are very much the core of this side going forward.

So after all that, you are worried about the quality of the kids we are bringing in, and the solution is....to bring more kids in? Surely you can see the broken logic there.

Ultimately picking 1 player in this draft may not make us but it certainly won't break us. We've invested bloody heavily in the draft through the rebuild and clearly over the last few years we've focussed more on surrounding those kids with experience. Don't forget we also brought in an established 21 year old and a promising 22 year old.

My final wish list:
  1. Motlop
  2. Bazzo
  3. A slider
  4. Alleer :straining:
  5. Mid/fwd - one of many - oh right MacDonald
Let's say Connor is a reasonable accumulator, however my preference is still with, Motlop, Taylor, Butler or Clarke, type players, injecting more skill and forward pressure at ground level.
Arlo Draper is no longer apart of Cal's updated Phantom.

Is he really that lazy?
Zac Taylor is my wish….feel he’s the type of player we need.
Unless someone special slides through like Goater, Chesser or Sonsie I'd be happy to trade the pick for a future 2nd or even a future third with a late pick coming back.
I must admit I wouldn't mind us drafting Leek Alleer.
I still think Goater is in range for us if we stick with pick 25 (probably 27 at that point). Hawthorn, Sydney and Freo are the dangers, but I think we can make a trade if he gets past Sydney, maybe even trade with them.
My ideal picks within our draft range.

1. Butler (I think is the most likely to be gone)
2 Warner (likely to be available and has a role available as outside mid)
2 Alleer (Jones replacement and probably the most upside out of anyone in the draft)
4 Taylor (fills that mid forward role, upgrade on Fisher IMO)

Not interested in McDonald. Admittingly my viewing is limited, I just don't think we need that style of player. Happy to be proven wrong though.
I hope we get a winger. Josh Sinn, Wilmot and Chesser are great players who would fit that need but they'll all go in the first round. Someone like Blake Howes would be great for us, but I see Melbourne selecting him with pick 19.

Matty Johnson and Josh Goater look likely to slide but I doubt they'll get to our pick 27. Jesse Motlop would be my preference after that but North are looking to select him with pick 22. Will be interesting to see if we actually end up going with MacDonald as rumoured.
Really hope Sonsie slides to us, highly doubt it though...

But would be happy with a MacDonald, Motlop or KPD... If Austin and Co thinks that's best...

Thought I'd provide a bit of context to some names on recent wish lists....

I have rejigged my consensus draft. It's not as robust as usual. But it provides some idea of where players might go and what chance we have of seeing them available at our pick (used pick 28 as proxy to account for some bidding action).

PlayerRangeConsensus rankingOdds available at Carlton's pick
Johnson9-16130.00%
Goater6-27150.00%
Draper12-27160.00%
Sonsie13-281811.11%
Chesser15-311911.11%
Bazzo19-362255.56%
Taylor22-332466.67%
Howes24-50+2644.44%
Butler17-50+2833.33%
Motlop22-50+3055.56%
Conway23-523266.67%
Macdonald25-473377.78%
Alleer21-52+3588.89%
Warner37-50+52100.00%

Obviously this is all just projected. The odds aren't real, just based on analysis of a bunch of phantoms.

Bazzo on a lot of wishlists. My sheet says decent chance he slides to our pick.
Same for Taylor. Decent chance he's available. Motlop and Butler too.
Alleer and MacDonald almost guaranteed to be available.
Johnson, Goater, Draper won't last to us. V slim chance we see Sonsie or Chesser.

I give us a 30% chance of trading our pick for a future 2nd and a throwaway this year and drafting a late kid we like.

I think if the guy we're set on gets picked up, that's our follow up

I think there's a good chance that clubs go away after night one and look at a bunch of kids they like still on the board. Offers will come for picks in the early 20s.

Our pick isn't the sharpest round 2 pick around, but we could definitely have some in-principle contingent trades with some clubs. That IF it gets to our pick and their slider is still on the board, we downgrade this year and pocket something for next year.

The first couple of picks in the 2nd round are like gold. Can easily get you way overs. I'd like to get my hands on some of those in future years. Although not via our ladder position....

I agree (which is logical , because Nick Austin agrees) that we would like to get into next years draft ideally. Am sort of expecting a downgrade from 25 to get that 3rd rounder back next year at least. Our plan has clearly been to keep the list intact this year for Vossy and Hansen to have a look at it, and then to clearly make some changes next year.

Of course if a surprise, or targeted, player we like is still there at 25 we would take him though.

Love the interest of a draft with 1 future year of pick swaps.

Absolutely. Profile wise late rumoured Cooper Hamilton interests me more than MacDonald. A better hand next year after a major assessment year would be great. Our list profile means that we will be seeking the next wave of KPP sometime soon.

When will Carlton be making their selections?

The Blues will be taking one live pick in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft, as well as some senior upgrades to round out their three required selections in the national draft.

As things stand, the Blues have pick No.25, which is likely to be shifted back slightly due to father-son bidding on players like Nick Daicos (Collingwood) and Sam Darcy (Western Bulldogs).

With pick No.25 falling in the second round, Carlton does not currently have a selection in the Wednesday night allotment of picks.

Now that we are closer to the ND - just a reminder...

How good is getting Cerra for #6?
Who would/ could we get for what is now #8 anyway?
Cerra is a known entity and a years of development ahead of these 18 years old draftees - what a great trade - very happy camper here :D

'Twas the night before Draftmas, when all through the board,
Not a poster was stirring, not even BlueAbroad.
The wishlists were hung by the laptops with care,
In hopes that at 25 a slider would be there...

The fans were nestled all snug in their seats,
With highlights of youtube playing on repeat.
And Austin in his polo and Brodie in his cap,
Had just settled down for a mid-first round nap...

"Now, Darcy! now, Daicos! now Andrew and Gibcus!
On, Sonsie! on, Chesser! on, Goater and Amiss!
To the Dogs and the Pies! to the Suns and the Dons!
Cross from my list! Cross off! cross off, gone!"

Well Ferris, at least your poem was better than Twomey and Beveridge's "Horne in the S.A." song. :)
