A review from the Carlton website

CARLTON held its first serious hit-out of the year at Visy Park on Friday, with the intra-club practice match providing a glimpse of things to come for the post-Fevola era Blues.

All four ruckmen played and looked in excellent condition, with Shaun Hampson and Matthew Kreuzer spending some time up forward with Robert Warnock and Sam Jacobs predominantly on the ball.

Setanta O'hAilpin, Lachie Henderson and eye-catching rookie Levi Casboult completed the tall options with the hit-out giving the Blues' coaching staff plenty of food for thought.

Also, think he was a Bullants player but #27 for the reds was a foot shorter than Eddie.

Anton Woods, played with the Northern Knights last year (one game for the bullants) and is a real little goer, was pleased to see him not look that out of place, well done young fella.

Read on TC that # 21 was the former WCE, Ashley Arrowsmith,.

FMD I didn't even recognise him without the mop (even though I'd seen his WAFL games last year with no hair, time for new goggles)

Didn't make it down to PP today but read earlier posts about the elusive #21 and Tiller came to mind..... we did draft him as a forward.... interesting to read he played in the backline.

Leigh

arrowsmith?

was on my team, had skill
it was 16v16 with 5 fill ins because of injured senior players, he looks to be playing bullants this year.

great to see the bombers getting touched up. naitanui on fire. richo just mentioned nic nat is already bench pressing 135kg as a 19yold. He could be unstopable in a few years

after watching todays game i have got some concerns about our forward line. The club boasts we are going to have a rotating forward line and about our depth. What they are really saying is they have no idea what to do.

good teams have good chemistry. we need a settled line up. I think the MC has to make a call on Waite and Kreuzer and make one of them a permanent forward we can build a forward line around. whoever it is doesnt necesserily need to kick big bags every week but rather be a consistent target and a leader down there.

hampson, ohalpin, causbolt, henderson are all project players and will be inconsistent. Fisher isnt up to it. Yarran isnt interested.

i think kreuzer could play a reiwoldt time CHF role running between the arcs when needed. he has the tank, the height, the strength and the smarts. he is even a better kick for goal than roo.

I also think Waite could be an great CHF

what are your thoughts?

Levi Casboult was quite good today - but from what I saw of the first half was matched up by Joe Anderson who was giving away 10cm and probably 12kilos.

I think Levi will be a player but would have liked to have seen him on a better matched opponent.:thumbsu:

Saw the 2nd half. Noticed a few things:
- Gibbs is a star. First 5 minutes i saw he must have had 10 -12 disposals.
- Russell looks much more confidnent, directing, and getting alot more ball
- Ellard will be played in the back half
- Okeefe still isnt AFL ready.
- Mclean is a great aquisition and will work well with Judd and Hadley
- Scotland is a man on a mission. Best 22 easily.
- Houlihan will feature heavily in the season. Dont discount him.

Waht you will see in the game plan this year:
Defenders pushing up and running in waves. Full back line coming all the way up to the centre sqaure. Will mean higher disposal counts for Jammo and Thornton and will need accountability as well as running power from the defenders.
- Forwards pushing up and one or two doubling back quicky leaving a completely open Forward 50 for a player to run back into and take a simple mark depending on the delivery.

yes yes yes!! i'm so glad ash played today. i hope that means he finally chose the bullants. i've known him since primary school and he's gonna be so valuable for the ants this year. looks huge in those pictures. got delisted by wce this year, didn't adapt to playing interstate very well, also lacked pace which is more than likely why the bombers overlooked him. insanely bad luck he didn't get redrafted this year but if he does well enough this year then theres every chance of a comeback.

sweet. :)

Just quickly from me:

Robbo: played brilliantly, kicking looked much better today.

Gibbs: Solid as usual

McLean: Seemed a tad slow

Hadley: showed more than McLean, Splendini was saying he was moving much better than previous years.

Carazzo: had a shocker, sprayed it all over the park

Yarran: despite some posters not happy with his game I actually think he played well and got a few sublime touches and was noticable

Hammer: A few great marks today, some good shots aswell

Defenders: Jamo, T Bird, Emu all did well...Joey did okay aswell

Can't think of much more..

I think the wind played a bit of havoc with skills today. I thought the ball was flat in the first qtr there were that many floaters. Carrots kicked one out on the full in the 1st or 2nd, and everyone around me commented on it being a typical Carrazzo kick - but it actually swung quite a bit in the wind.

Was at the game and liked the look of Hampson as FF. Yarran would one minute show the brilliance that you keep hearing about then a second later he just looked lazy.
Gibbs use of the ball is awesome really think he is a good chance at the brownlow. Was also really impressed with him after the game, he took time to talk to some kids and pose for photos. Seems like a real down to earth kid. Also Eddie was great with the fans as well.

I took some pictures and will try and upload them later.

Cheers guys.
