Another annoying selection as I had him rated at exactly 20 in early November and changed my mind a bit lol

So he is one I liked from last year and it was as that inside mid, to me he look liked Tom Green lite with his ability to win clearances and release to his teammates. He is a player I thought was very stiff not to make Metro selection at the time much like Ross was last year and just re affirmed to me I should really stick to my guns sometimes.

His skills can be lacking at times especially by foot but he really does excel at winning clearances and bursting from stoppages, tackles well and can even go forward and take a mark.

The thing that really impressed me was in his last game in the first final, there was a boundary throw in inside 50 and the Knights best forward is D’Intinosante but he is a rookie prospect at best and you would think in a situation inside 50 that the more highly touted Philp would be wanting to win the clearance and kick the goal but what he did was identify his teammate as the most dangerous option and payed a fantastic block which you guessed it led to a goal to D’Intinosante.

So this showed not only his footy smarts but also his ability to play team footy and despite having the skill set and many players in his position wanting to show off and kick a goal he did the team thing that turned out for the best in that situation.
It is funny how players you rate highly but drop due to BF/experts/friends don't rate the same as you. You then regret when a recruiter picks them high or they perform at AFL level.
He looks like he fumbles a little, is that true or is he generally a one touch player?

I still reckon SOS was shrewd.
Traded up to 20 with Robertson still avail, to see what else he could extract & move 43 up a bit more.
No offers came
He to Philp as plan B

On Philp, the upside is really obvious for everyone to see. He's a yard quicker over 20m than pretty much every other midfielder in the draft. His combine was sensational:
  • 1st in 20m sprint test recording 2.867 seconds (think Jack Petrucelle quick)
  • Equal 5th vertical jump recording 69cm
  • Equal 5th on yo-yo test recording 21.5
Most importantly, he knows how to win his own ball and was racking up some decent numbers in the NAB league.

He's a real point of difference player. No doubt his draft combine results made him rocket up the draft board.

According to article in The Age - Philp was rated by other recruiters and they thought he was a good selection.

Robertson has me stumped, I see him as a Neale clone

Rivers is another, kid that can play all over the park, with the way he reads the play/pill and elite by foot. Still see him as a top 10 prospect

Taylor on talent alone is also a 1st rounder, if he gets his head straight, motivated and committed, could become the most dynamic/dangerous player of this draft
Taylor may have risks higher than known, but even if Robertson's kicking is suspect, he'll do everything in his power to win.
Rivers is just a pure player and reminds me of Mundy.

It’s mostly based of metro selection as it’s mostly done through the clubs who want to see those players. If media or BF didn’t rate him it wouldn’t effect me.

he was more one touch at the start of the year but he started to use his speed more and try a bit too much later on which had its pros and cons, clubs don’t see it as a big issue and think they could iron it out.

FYI I posted this in the welcome thread for Philp but relevant here as well due to the lack of info on afl.com.au

AFL Draft Central write-up, so much better than any other resource and quite prophetic in hindsight.

Next year's 2nd and 3rd were supposed to be out the door anyway, we may as well.
Problem is no one is doing that trade.
I’d honestly trade our future first for Ports 22 with future 3rds and 4ths coming back for extra points next season. Those extra points could see us possibly upgrade our second rounder next year anyway. Sydney would probably prefer a future first and some later picks next year for Papley anyway, if it comes to that again.
I would just really love Robertson.

Such a great website and resource, shame the AFL don't produce a product like this. Hopefully sends some resources their way or opens up resources for them to use, like highlights

List is in a really good spot now in regards to having those replacements for our older boys. Simpson, Murphy, Kreuzer, Curnow, Betts. I think were ticking a lot of boxes. Rebuild will be at 100% this year or the next. Then I can see us trading players and first rounders and trying to make upgrades.

As it's turned out we didn't really need that priority pick, we've manufactured our own. Stocker, Kemp and Philp for the one pick. Martin for nothing (hopefully).

Interesting to see who we land with our later picks. Always some interesting players later on. Wild would have to be on the cards as well.

Genuine midfield depth for the first time in a very long time. Northern Blues will be worth a look this season.

Surely the boat has sailed on Robertson now that we've drafted Kemp and Philp - need to diversify a bit with our picks and balance the list rather than fixating on one name.

I'm also seriously confused by Robertson. This kid has put up Walsh level numbers, has averaged over 30 through the carnival, won the Larke medal and captained his state. He could not have done anymore but has slid due to a slight knock on his kicking, just like Worpel. So many times recruiters draft hoping that players reach their potential ceiling but this kid's floor is almost the highest in the draft. I can't work it out.

Hey guys sorry to intrude! Very shrewd work last night and it had me a little intrigued. What was the purpose of the second trade of 22 and 55 for 20? Was it thought that Philp would go in those 2 picks, otherwise you could have had the first selection tonight (more time to think) and a free shot later on? Just curious

He seemed to have ties to Richmond, is the only sense I can make of it.

I ventured over to the Richmond draft board , I had no idea how obsessed with our draft they were. It was basically 4 pages or more of Carlton abuse.

I was wondering about the Port trade, but if it opens up options with regards to trading future first round picks, I'm on board. It also made sure we got our player for a pick we may not use.

what are your thoughts on philp windows1 ?
I quite like him. He’s a lot quicker than he realises. Like super fast off the mark. I’d like to see him play VFL for a year and really build confidence. I haven’t seen him up close enough to work out whether that upper body will fill out. It needs to. It’s not Paddy Dow bad but it needs work. His kicking is solid I think. Action looks slightly weird but it’s solid. Hands seem ‘ok’ without being amazing. I haven’t been able to work out what keeps his numbers down. I would have liked to see him pick up 3-5 more a game. Overall I think he’s a great pick. Just adds another player to a burgeoning midfield.

Don't know for sure, but his family are (were) mad Tigers fans, and Richmond ended up drafting Thomson Dow at 21 who is also an explosive contested mid...albeit a little bit slower than Philp. Even if we didn't know for sure, it seems we believed it was a possibility that Richmond would draft Philp, and so we gave up a late pick we don't need to use to make it a sure thing.

Have I missed something here? Did we get a future 4th back from port?
