Every season is starting to look the same now. Sure we can be happy that the effort was there and we got close enough to beating GWS but take a step back and our issues are still the same year in year out.

Our foot skills kill us. Simply put if they don’t just annihilate our rebound attacks they often end up costing us goals on turnover.

Our lack of forward marking targets prevents us from truly dominating games at any point in time. We get the inside 50s but it was painfully clear we were lacking targets especially after Moore went down. More often than not we were going to 2 on 1s or simply facing a forward line made of 3 or 4 players and each locked in on a one on one (and none particularly good at it). Other teams build forward lines around structures and position themselves to be dangerous in multiple situations. We neglect our forward line as if it’s just a byproduct of the game plan.

And these things aren’t new. They’re the results of years of mistakes and a lack of direction at the club in our game plan and recruiting.

It just feels like the same story as the last three years repeating itself hence why I can’t get too enthusiastic about a good effort and an honourable loss. I wish I could be more optimistic about the seasons but I haven’t seen anything to make me feel so in our first two games.

For some improvement and to steer the ship we’re going to need Elliott to come back ASAP because his talent allows him to shine even in a dysfunctional forward line. Also it’d be nice to stop messing around with Adams and Treloar and not have them forward and send Sidebottom there instead. For reasons I can’t explain we’ve decided to make Sidey our inside mid this year, he starts most centre bounces in the middle and he’s very involved in the contested game vs on the spread when we’ve got three other lids on the periphery who are a lot more suited to the role.

De Goey back will help us too. Yesterday we had so much dominance in the ruck but or reading of the tap was really poor and our main clearance winner ended up being Grundy himself. With so much dominance on the ruck we still lost the clearance count and that’s one thing De Goey will immediately improve us on. That is if he gets sent in the middle rather than parked forward for most of the game.

That can allow us to improve somewhat but to truly compete we need to be playing a recognisable brand of football and we’re far from it at the moment.

What burns me is Alex Fasolo was held over in the VFL practice match after half time.
So basically, he played a half, then told to hit the showers all when we needed some class inside 50 up the road.
The AFL game was over before half time in the VFL.

Agree. The 4 day break between bombers and tigers games is the perfect chance to blood a couple of kids in each so as to give midfielders like pendles, sidey, treloar and adams a rest.

Sier, Wills, Daicos have to come in for one of those games..... and hopefully have De Goey back by then too.
JDG should be a handy inclusion for round 4

I think we need to accept cox will be in. At least he provides a 1v1 target. If he was out their tonight they don’t get those cheap pick off marks as we bombed long in the last. He def needs to lift but we know Bucks will play him.
In Round 1, more than dropped marks, the big issue with Cox was that he did allow those cheap pick off marks. He just got so far under the ball, through a combination of poor judgement an poor body work, that he wasn't a factor. Hopefully that game was a one-off and not indicative of where he is at.

Out: Broomhead (injured) Moore (injured), Brown

In: Cox, Fasolo, McLarty

New: McLarty

I’m assuming Reid is not quite ready if so McLarty will have to wait

Unsure De Goey status, Sier outside chance as well.

That's not what I meant.
Why did he play half a VFL game, for what exercise other than Nathan's ego?

It's clear Nathan doesn't value goal kickers.
I’ll be surprised if Fasolo is playing for Collingwood in 2019

Or you know you could look it at it like.. It's obvious Fasolo isn't working hard as he should but that'd be insane because blaming it on a coaches "ego" is perfect.

I think Carlton's changes will be just as important as ours. Kreuzer back will allow them to revert to their normal structure with Casboult up front and Curnow there as well. Weitering will go back I believe and then they'll have all their ducks in a row cos they'll bring back Jack Silvagni as well. The key this week is for us to bring the same intensity we did against GWS. Bring that and we're half a chance.
Like to see Mclarty, Daicos and maybe Faz come in.

We didn’t need another injury.

Varcoe is either cooked or playing injured. Either way he needs to be dropped. It is a continual slide in output with him over an extended period now and as a senior guy on a list that desperately needs to pump games into the next generation.. it's not good enough and he has to get the VFL rocket.

Varcoe is D*O*N*E.
Dead wood.
Just like Wells, Blair, Mayne... all of them. Nothings. Dead wood.
Season is already shot.
Just play the kids.
I loved seeing Aish, Stevenson, Murray and Brown bust their guts against GWS.
More of this.

Barring no injuries we should have our best 22 for the Anzac game

Swans were 0-6 and the obituary was read in 2017. Teams can bounce back and seasons can change quickly, just a bit of luck and we’ll be ok

Love to to see Mihocek, McLarty, Daicos & Sier get games under their belts

You're not comparing us to Sydney are you?
Good god.

Is this "McLarty IN" just the latest wishful thinking? Like the constant "Kirby IN" posts last year - he played, he was clearly not ready. Good player, great potential, not ready...

I have not seen McLarty play so maybe he is THE ANSWER, but I would rather we gave Cox a proper run after his nightmare Round 1 - he looked good at times in the JLT and now we need to see if he can build some confidence or if it will jus not happen for him. Club has invested a lot in him up to now, got to follow through.

We all want Daicos, Kirby, Sier, McLarty to be superstars because they are ours and what we have at the moment is a little uninspiring, but they are what they are and wishing won't make any difference

We have never lost when Kirby plays so statistically speaking we know best.
If you’re gonna lose you may as well lose while developing kids.

In: Fasolo Cox
Out: Broomhead Moore

I'm assuming Reid won't be right. Cal Brown gets another shot, deserves some continuity. Crocker has looked decent enough and doesn't deserve the chop. And it was great to see Scharenberg nail his call up
