Every season is starting to look the same now. Sure we can be happy that the effort was there and we got close enough to beating GWS but take a step back and our issues are still the same year in year out.
Our foot skills kill us. Simply put if they don’t just annihilate our rebound attacks they often end up costing us goals on turnover.
Our lack of forward marking targets prevents us from truly dominating games at any point in time. We get the inside 50s but it was painfully clear we were lacking targets especially after Moore went down. More often than not we were going to 2 on 1s or simply facing a forward line made of 3 or 4 players and each locked in on a one on one (and none particularly good at it). Other teams build forward lines around structures and position themselves to be dangerous in multiple situations. We neglect our forward line as if it’s just a byproduct of the game plan.
And these things aren’t new. They’re the results of years of mistakes and a lack of direction at the club in our game plan and recruiting.
It just feels like the same story as the last three years repeating itself hence why I can’t get too enthusiastic about a good effort and an honourable loss. I wish I could be more optimistic about the seasons but I haven’t seen anything to make me feel so in our first two games.
For some improvement and to steer the ship we’re going to need Elliott to come back ASAP because his talent allows him to shine even in a dysfunctional forward line. Also it’d be nice to stop messing around with Adams and Treloar and not have them forward and send Sidebottom there instead. For reasons I can’t explain we’ve decided to make Sidey our inside mid this year, he starts most centre bounces in the middle and he’s very involved in the contested game vs on the spread when we’ve got three other lids on the periphery who are a lot more suited to the role.
De Goey back will help us too. Yesterday we had so much dominance in the ruck but or reading of the tap was really poor and our main clearance winner ended up being Grundy himself. With so much dominance on the ruck we still lost the clearance count and that’s one thing De Goey will immediately improve us on. That is if he gets sent in the middle rather than parked forward for most of the game.
That can allow us to improve somewhat but to truly compete we need to be playing a recognisable brand of football and we’re far from it at the moment.
