I'd play Hayes from the perspective he is showing he can at least offer something in the forward lines .....
What does Hayes offer up forward? Doesn't kick goals in the SANFL let alone the AFL. For further consideration 7 AFL games last year, not so much as a point.

EDIT: Sorry theouthouse, Hayes did kick 2 SANFL goals yesterday

On paper it looks like Hayes put in a descent shift for the Maggies, probably needed to be doing that for the last month or so.
He only rucked in the last quarter.
Ironically, he was only given that opportunity because they took Lycett out the game at 3 Q/Time(for Friday night)

We are going to get smashed in the ruck no matter who plays for us.

The 2 players that need to stand up more than anybody, defensively especially, are Wines and Drew. Oliver, Petracca and Viney will have an absolute field day otherwise. Butters and Rozee need to be clearance machines and most importantly lower the eyes going forward. Bombing the ball forward will be suicide.

Lycett will play against Melbourne and do the bulk of the ruckwork. It would be an ideal intro for Visentini.

The problem isn't L-plate ruckmen, it's the L-plate forward line - if Dixon doesn't play, the best option is to play Finlayson as a full time forward (maybe with an occasional run in ruck), then we'll have Lord as the next key forward and we could have a resting ruck. That might be Teakle, but Visentini could offer just as much, lose a little as a forward, gain some in the ruck.

Lord is a Hail Mary ruck option, he might attend a couple of centre bounces in a game, like SPP.
Lycette and Dixon are in; the issue is, do they drop Teakle for Lycett or keep Teakle in the team (with Lycett).

Agree, I thought Ollie play his best game for the year and, Petracca off for scans today.
And MELBOURNE midfielder Tom Sparrow has been banned for this week!!!

He was handy early on in his SANFL career for a goal a game. Looks to be getting back into that style over his last two SANFL games.

60 games is all he has played so far between both grades over 6 years, that isn't enough to get match fitness in any grade.

With the possibility to rest up forward with Marshall out, I would give him that opportunity over Teakle or Lycett while maintaining 3 talls up front.

And he can get some advice off pack a day gawn on how he managed durries and fitness.

With Marshall out, it's a possibility - but only if we then drop Lord. Park Lycett/Teakle up forward when the other is rucking, but this could impact our forward structure.

I'd prefer to only play one of the two - probably Lycett as he can at least nullify the ruck contest itself.

After this game though, straight back to Teakle to develop against the Hawks. I say we play Teakle every game we can afford to carry him to accelerate his development. Lycett is not the answer anymore. Teakle may not be either, but he's the only future option we have right now, we need to give it the best chance of success in time for finals. If he's not ready by then, we could always just pivot back to Lycett at that point.

I would be happy with a Hayes/Teakle combination however it won’t happen As they’ll certainly bring Lycett in.

Man oh man we really need Charlie to get up and play. I think he will, even if he's sore.

Lycett comes in. We can debate Hayes, Visentini, etc but I think against Gawn and Grundy we will need Scooter's experience and bigger body. I wonder if Teakle could play CHB as he has at times in the SANFL? Follow whichever Melb ruck rests/floats forward.

In: Dixon, Lycett, DBJ

Out: Marshall (concussion), Evans, Bonner, Mead

Lever for 20 intercept marks if we use the usual Hinkley forward 50 entry tactic, especially with no Dixon and Marshall. Will be fun to watch.
Need to get it to JHF for i50s. Even if he spears them in a little too hard and low sometimes it basically removes the potential for their loose to sweep across for an intercept mark.

Out:
Jonas, McEntee, Farrell ( and yes, I know that won't happen under this regime).

In:
DBJ, Clurey, Jackson.

Teakle hangs on by the skin of his teeth as Dixon won't be fit, they've marked Hayes as 'delistable' even if he produced six BOG's in the SANFL, and Dante isn't ready yet.

Essendon beat Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. They are totally beatable with a good coach and a good plan.

Carr to remain match day coach from the box while Stinkers stays on the bench where he can scrape the built-up mud out of the players boots with his tongue.

Depends how you view the game i.e. win at all costs or work on generational change. The latter is being forced on us a bit but for me it's not as confronting as it was a few weeks ago.

I'm sure one of the ruck boys can "Sam Mitchell" him in the first 10 minutes. We need to think outside the box.
Sparrow is out with a sling tackle.
Petracca is a bit injured.
Petty might also miss.

I thought last week there were times when we upped the work rate when we didn't have the ball. I think it was in the 3rd and I was quite impressed.

Should be a good game.

In: Dixon(if fit) DBJ (if fit) Scully, hayes,
Out: mead, marshall, lord, teakle
Scully to full foward for lord, dixon for marshall if fit, dbj for mead if fit, and hayes to cycle ruck with finlayson, and dixon.
Why would you drop teakle and lord for Hayes and scully?

Melbourne are a very good team, premier to semi finalist (should have gone deeper) and they haven't gotten weaker. No point trying to draw a long bow and convince yourself of anything other than that. If we win, it'll be the first real statement this group has made.
I’m not convincing myself of anything. Just stating that ladder position isn’t always the metric of a teams form.

Just like St Kilda and Essendon when the Vic media were pumping them up, a few rounds ago - they hadn’t actually played many good teams.

Melbourne, no doubt have talent and damage at their disposal, but there form line suggests they haven’t played good teams - ie 7 of the bottom 8, a win against a slow starting Western bulldogs, and a loss to Brisbane.

They definetly have weaknesses, and perhaps Ken is the man to exploit that… :) maybe not and Gawn will Gawn babies all over Teakle…

Always wary of this guy:
Bayley Fritsch
He is an excellent player and goal scorer.
Guess Burton gets him.

There must be two Brynn Teakles because I suspect the one I am watching is not going to get much better. Melbourne have both Gawn and Grundy in their rucks and Teakle on his own will not compete so we have no option but to go with two genuine ruckmen.

Two years ago we were able to fit Lycett and Ladhams into the side and still have room for Dixon, Georgiades and Marshall up forward but in 2023 we haven't got room for Lycett and Teakle in ruck while playing Dixon, Finlayson and Lord up forward. Jeremy Finlayson is pretty versatile and he could always slip down back and play as the extra tall defender. Finlayson's marking in defence helped get us over the line against St Kilda a couple of weeks back.

A mitigating factor is the weather as the forecast for Friday reads-

Cloudy. High chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming westerly 15 to 20 km/h during the day.

The forecast for wet weather means we may opt not to go too tall.

Second Dee out: they are hopeful Christian Petracca will be fit to face Port on Friday night, while Harrison Petty has been ruled out for at least a month.
