There must be two Brynn Teakles because I suspect the one I am watching is not going to get much better. Melbourne have both Gawn and Grundy in their rucks and Teakle on his own will not compete so we have no option but to go with two genuine ruckmen.

Two years ago we were able to fit Lycett and Ladhams into the side and still have room for Dixon, Georgiades and Marshall up forward but in 2023 we haven't got room for Lycett and Teakle in ruck while playing Dixon, Finlayson and Lord up forward. Jeremy Finlayson is pretty versatile and he could always slip down back and play as the extra tall defender. Finlayson's marking in defence helped get us over the line against St Kilda a couple of weeks back.

A mitigating factor is the weather as the forecast for Friday reads-

Cloudy. High chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening. Light winds becoming westerly 15 to 20 km/h during the day.

The forecast for wet weather means we may opt not to go too tall.
Feel like there's no room for lycett and teakle because lycett hasn't been at the level required can't play him just because he's a ruckman...

I’m not convincing myself of anything. Just stating that ladder position isn’t always the metric of a teams form.

Just like St Kilda and Essendon when the Vic media were pumping them up, a few rounds ago - they hadn’t actually played many good teams.

Melbourne, no doubt have talent and damage at their disposal, but there form line suggests they haven’t played good teams - ie 7 of the bottom 8, a win against a slow starting Western bulldogs, and a loss to Brisbane.

They definetly have weaknesses, and perhaps Ken is the man to exploit that… :) maybe not and Gawn will Gawn babies all over Teakle…
If we win over a team with 2 x dominant key defenders and 2 x dominant rucks it will show serious signs of both development and game plan improvement.

Ultimately nothing will be proven til finals but if we beat Melbourne it will be time to pull out the dumb and dumber memes.

I could see us going the dirty ball tactic from a few years ago over west against West Coast… however don’t have a 19 year old Rozee to park at FF and be able to hit ground balls at pace.

Boy, remeber when Ken WAS brave and TRIED to win games we weren’t expected to! Then we have this plonker who has set up a few times to ‘minimise’ the damage…

Where did it all go wrong Ken?

Are we really that jaded that we're missing the Hinkley of 2019?

Because that was peak Hinkley:

  • Co-captains
  • "It's a tough competition and someone has to lose"
  • "We've got a long way to go to be like the Richmond Football Club" (quoted after losing to their VFL team at home)

Bassett on ruck options against Narrm
“We'd like to be going slightly better in the ruck. We’ve certainly been challenged by ruckmen in most games this year, whether it be in the (centre) or around the ground. I think we can cope with the ruck stuff, it’s probably as much around the ground and limiting impact for (Max) Gawn and (Brodie) Grundy when they get in front of the ball and behind the ball. The midfield has done a great job in absorbing some of the ruck hitout differential, it's a little bit more around the ground. We'll see how the week plays out. Scott (Lycett) played well yesterday (in the SANFL). We know the challenges of two rucks and the physicality that (Gawn and Grundy) will bring to the contest and around the ground with how hard they work so it's going to be a test for whichever ruck we pick.”

I have a feeling we are playing Brynn Teakle because he is 204 cms as it certainly can't be on form, Teakle is not at the 'level required' either. On Friday Teakle will not only be up against Max Gawn but Gawn will have Brodie Grundy as back up. Nathan Bassett appears to acknowledge that we have a problem particularly with Gawn and Grundy marking around the ground. If I was sure that we had a Coach with the strategy to cover the total annihilation of Brynn Teakle in the ruck I would not be as concerned but I fear we haven't.

We have to do something and as I see it going with two genuine ruckmen is a possible solution if you have a better alternative to Teakle v Gawn and Teakle v Grundy let's hear it.

Yeah, identifying the problem and doing something about it are two different things. The forecast is for rain and if we get enough of it the Gawn and Grundy effect around the ground could be minimised. Bassett seems to be putting a lot of faith in Rozee and Butters minimising the Melbourne ruck ascendancy so let us hope their good form continues and that Ollie Wines continues where he left off against the Kangaroos.

Some fun stats:
  • We are number 1 for generating offensive 1v1 contests, approx 20% better than second (Bulldogs)
  • We are AFL average for winning them
  • We are AFL average for allowing defensive 1v1 contests
  • We are number 18 for losing them, approx 15% worse than second (Essendon)

Man oh man we really need Charlie to get up and play. I think he will, even if he's sore.

Lycett comes in. We can debate Hayes, Visentini, etc but I think against Gawn and Grundy we will need Scooter's experience and bigger body. I wonder if Teakle could play CHB as he has at times in the SANFL? Follow whichever Melb ruck rests/floats forward.

In: Dixon, Lycett, DBJ

Out: Marshall (concussion), Evans, Bonner, Mead
We need Dixon just to occupy Steven May

Mentioning the marking around the ground says to be they are going to go with Teakle again.

They like his mobility and don't car eif he marks it so long as he is there to compete or draw the ruckman away.

Nice in theory, but in practice he doesn't actually do that.

Our coaches are far too dogmatic. Obviously they prefer an athletic ruckman who can impact around the ground to a pure tap ruckman. Which would be fine, if not for the fact that despite his athleticism Teakle quite simply doesn't actually impact around the ground. If the coaches were looking at what our available options actually do rather than what they should be able to do in theory, Hayes is the clear better player.

Need to get it to JHF for i50s. Even if he spears them in a little too hard and low sometimes it basically removes the potential for their loose to sweep across for an intercept mark.
Need to use a semi-fit Dixon and Lord to tag May and Lever and then use the smalls and Finlayson as the avenues to goal. The old decoy strategy.

Whatever the game plan is it will have to be based around losing the ruck contests regardless of who is selected in that role for Port, plus as has already been suggested if we kick the ball in high to the forward 50 Lever and May will have an absolute picnic picking that stuff off, so it will need to be brought in hard and low and hopefully to a leading forward often enough to create goals.

Re those ruck contests, to have any chance of winning Ollie Wines has to bring his `A' game from the first bounce, the team can't afford for him to be a spectator for the first half as he has unfortunately been a number of times this season, because if that happens against this mob it will almost certainly be game over by half time.

The coaching group don't care about winning hit outs.

Josh Carr said this weeks ago.

But I am going to spew up this week if I see Melbourne kick uncontested goals from boundary throw ins when the ball is in their forward line due to Teakle's inability to provide a ruck contest.

Teakle has to put body on body. None of this bear hugging his ruck opponent.

And Lycett is not the answer. He should never play another AFL game.

Certainly believe Lycett and Teakle will be named.
As bad as it is, Lycett is a better match for Grundy, while Teakle must use his leap against Gawn.
If Teakle tries to body up on either of these two guys, it's curtains. He just doesn't have the body to do it. He's got no choice but to jump at them.

What does Hayes offer up forward? Doesn't kick goals in the SANFL let alone the AFL. For further consideration 7 AFL games last year, not so much as a point.

EDIT: Sorry theouthouse, Hayes did kick 2 SANFL goals yesterday
may and lever would love him playing forward, they wouldn't even bother manning him up and would know he is no chance of chasing them out.

hes either ruck or nothing and at this stage its definetly a nothing

It's wierd. The thing that most excited about Teakles debut was the way he thew himself in. Then he got injured.

For those who have seen more of him at SANFL level does he look timid there?

I feel like someone just needs to tell him that he will never make it if he doesn't throw himself in.

Sure he might get injured but if he doesn't throw himself in it won't matter if he's fit or not, he will never make it..

It feels like he is holding back for fear of injury ATM..

Petty is out. Will they bring Tomlinson or Turner in or just play Hibberd as 3rd tall?
