IN: Lycett, Dixon, DBJ
OUT: Marshall, Mead, Evans
SUB: Sinn

If Dixon isn't fit, play Hayes up forward. He's been training and playing up forward in the SANFL.
Evans shouldn't go out. He had 13 of 14 possessions rated as effective, kicked two goals, led the team for goal assists and had several score involvements. He should stay at least until Rioli returns.
If Dixon comes back then either Teakle or Lycett is going to make us top heavy on a wet night.
Hayes gave a big spark in the ruck during the last quarter against South, but if you watch the replay on AFL on Demand he tired pretty quickly and Visentini carried the ruck after that. Tragically, he just hasn't got the engine for AFL, even at this stage in his career.
Sinn is a talent but he needs to find more of the ball before earning an AFL spot in my opinion.

Who is missing from ports best 22 this week? Marshall Dixon Rioli?

At this stage Dixon will be back.

Missing from our best 22 that i can think of will be Marshall, Rioli, Duursma and Georgiadis.

Will Petracca get up with his ankle complaint?

Evans is a hard nut, game will suit.

Dixon will probably be on one leg after the second quarter much like the Bombers game if he plays.

But became important late so worth it with such a big game.

Who is missing from ports best 22 this week? Marshall Dixon Rioli?
Duursma (> a month away with PCL), and probably Charlie Dixon with a quad injury. Those are the two unavailable players we'll find hardest to cover and you should be most relieved about.
Two others who'd certainly be picked but we can cover are Willie Rioli (the 2nd game of his 2 game suspension) and Todd Marshall (concussion protocols). Saying we can cover Marshall is contentious as he can nail steep-angle shots few others can. But even at his 2022 best he's not a prolific goal scorer.

Surprised Kane Farrell's name not coming up more often in possible outs. Not gunning for him but there seems to be an odd level of acceptance here that his spot is safe.

Port Adelaide spearhead Charlie Dixon remains in serious doubt for Friday night’s crunch home clash against Melbourne after missing training.
The Power will give Dixon, who is recovering from a quad strain, until later in the week before making a selection call, though his absence on Wednesday suggests he is a good chance to be sidelined for a second consecutive match. Port coach Ken Hinkley said if the 32-year-old told him he was ready, he would be picked. “He’s tracking pretty well and we’re optimistic around him being available, but we won’t know that until much closer to the game,” Hinkley said. “If he’s not right, we won’t play him.”

Ruckman Scott Lycett appears likely to come into the side to help combat All-Australian duo Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy after training with the A side. Lycett was dropped in favour of Brynn Teakle on the back of a poor showing against the Western Bulldogs in round 5. Lycett registered 17 touches and five clearances in the SANFL on Sunday before being rested during the last quarter as coaches kept the Demons’ game in mind. Hinkley would not reveal the Power’s selections but said restricting Melbourne’s big man duo required a team effort. “Their two rucks are really dominant rucks and a great combination, probably equal or the best combination in the comp,” he said. “They’re going to be a real challenge, but it’s team v team, not just ruck v ruck. “They’ve got an elite midfield, but we’re really comfortable that our midfield can match it with most.”

This will get a laugh because he is never available but Fantasia is best 22 as well if he wasn’t made of wet tissue paper.
How? What has he/the Romans* ever done for us? Darcy Byrne-Jones alone has proved better in the role.

* Saving people the trouble

My predictions, assuming Dixon isn't fit:
Farrel -> DBJ
Marshall -> Lycett (Teakle to forwardline)

Ruck split:
  • Lycett 60%
  • Teakle 20%
  • Finlayson 20%

FB: Jonas McKenzie Burton
HB: Houston Aliir Bergman
C: Bonner Butters Boak
HF: DBJ Finlayson SPP
FF: McEntee Lord Teakle
R: Lycett Rozee JHF
INT: Williams Drew Wines Evans
Sub: Farrel or Mead

Lock in Lycett. Had a dream during the night that sirswampthing had posted a list of players who had taken a multiple mark of the round contenders on top of the same player. I somehow conjured up that Lycett had taken 3 on top of Clayton Oliver.

Woke up sweating.

I would honestly keep Dixon out for this one too.
He's clearly not right with his knee, I'm not sure one week off is going to solve that.
Last week we had 14 different goal kickers which is a club record, I feel like when Dixon is down there we get a little bit too Charlie-centric and there is that out that remains open to them where they can just bomb it on to his head and hope for the best. Against a team like Melbourne who will cause us to panic a bit with their pressure they will eat us up if we revert to that style of play. I say don't even give the midfield that option this week and force them to find another avenue to goal. We're much more dangerous when we're unpredictable.

There was some really good discussion on SEN with Kornes and Healy with the Champion Data guy, Daniel Hoyne - one good and one bad for us and they reinforced what is seen.

The bad one was that our defence when it is working as a whole is very good but individually in one on ones his words were EXTREMELY VULNERABLE. We are the worst at defending one on one.

He sighted this year Aliir being 3rd worse one on one which was a bit surprising and McKenzie being 5th worst which didn't surprise me as he has been burned on the lead.
Then Kane chimed in and tripled down on the situation and said if you plugged in Jonas stats, he would be around the same area. And if you watch the games, you will know this to be true. He continually gets burned on the lead and worse.

The good one was that our midfield is super hot.

Zak Butters was 4th ranked in the league overall in the last month.
After the Collingwood game, that is, in Round 4, Butters' centre bounce attendance has increased a fair bit.

Kane's top 10 young midfielders under 24 was Zak Butters at 7 and Connor Rozee at 2.
According to the stats, Rozee was 3 and Butters was 5.
Both of these guys have great ball getting and ball use skills.

With Horne-Francis possibly being better than both of them, we are looking super hot in the midfield. He will take a bit more time but we have all seen what is possible with this kid. It's happening!!!!!!

A lot of people here are always super worried about our team getting smashed as it is history and they are correct, however, we've never had a talented midfield that given opportunities, can impact the scoreboard in many ways. We really haven't had this with Boak, Wines and Ebert. They are good midfielders but not super impactful on the game. Very good but not exceptional like what we have now.

And not to sound like a broken record, a good to great ruck would really help.

Wines, Drew and Boak are on the bottom end of the rotation. Very good.
We have Jackson playing well now in the SANFL according to the guys who watch and Sinn is one of the most tantalising prospects in the game.
Lachie Jones and Jase Burgoyne also have a lot of talent.
Mead is also hanging around too.
Also I think Bergman will eventually become a midfielder.

The team has some ultra talent in the right spots but we also have some real holes too.
A good coach would change all this and some tweaks of list management.

I can't wait to see how we go against Melbourne, a quality team.

Who is missing from ports best 22 this week? Marshall Dixon Rioli?
If Dixon misses, we could well be fielding what many would have predicted at round 1 to be our entire SANFL forward line.

Marshall, Georgiades, Dixon, Rioli, Fantasia, all out is a huge imposition.

Finlayson will have to ruck, Butters has moved up the ground to fill other gaps.

Really SPP is the only one left.

Against the best defence in the comp, it will be a miracle if we can win.
