I would just rather target players like Howe, Varcoe who are mature but still young enough to be a chance in our next tilt.
Have just looked up his stats. Very poor. There is no way Collingwood will pick him. 32 year old.
Career finished

Being totally bored on a Sunday night... Player rankings on the AFL site, which of course dont show the full picture of a player...
NDS - ranked 121
Wells - ranked 256
Mayne - ranked 211
Maric - ranked 196

Not great... but maybe thats circumstantial and in contrast, we only have 6 players ranked higher than NDS - which is really kinda sad.
That's not really bad... 6x18 clubs = 106... Seems decent for 12th placed club

Would've been handy if he wanted out last year, I'd guess the trade could've been Witts + pick 8 for Treloar and we would still have this years pick 7

Correct! This really put a spanner in the works last year methinks...

Buck off! Promote the General! #17

Just wanted to chime in and say: I am shattered Wells is leaving North. will be a great Free agency pick up for you guys. class player with sublime skills

It's been reported that they can't agree on one, rather than that they won't offer him one.
Would be tough. Any contract with Wells surely you'd make performance based given his injury history.

We could pay top dollar for a guy who comes in and wins the B&F but on the flip side could play just a handful of games for us.

I think Wells is well worth the risk of throwing a few $$'s at.

Looking at the free agency list http://www.afl.com.au/trade/free-agency, he is clearly the best available mid.

No picks required to attain him, just risking salary cap (that we may not have spent anyway).

A fit Wells (its a risk, I know) undoubtably makes us a better team in 2017 IMO.

Agree. Wells at his Best does make us a better team BUT at 31 how many good games has he got left in the Tank? That is my Worry

Also, FWIW I think Mayne would be an Ok pick up.

He's arguably the best key(ish) forward on the free agency list. Vickery is the other who has claims.

As long as he isn't on too much cash, and his guaranteed contract length isn't too long.

Are we linked to anyone good/under 30 yet?

Wells is a quality player mind, if his level wasn't to drop next season and he stayed fit he makes us a better team for sure.

But at 31/32, both those questions aren't easy to answer.

That's the million dollar question.

Played 19 games this year and I expect he'll finish reasonably high up in the B&F.

Quick, excellent user of the ball.

I'd say there's more to it than that though, why wouldn't NM offer him a contract?

Are we trying to rort the FA compo system in reverse? Offer big contracts to Mayne and Wells (which their current teams won't match) to trigger decent compo for them for rebuilds. They then look after us on another deal. Ie: North drop their interest in RFA Brown or pay us overs for a Marley type?

It also doesn't include the likes of Howe and Reid who are no doubt higher quality than NDS. Given its over a two year rolling period it only paints a portion of the picture for experienced players.

Take Wells for instance he didn't play at all last year so his ranking would have started 2016 in the 300's.
