Varcoe is by far and away better at Pies than he was at Geelong. Just ask a passionate Cats supporter who watched all games.
JDG is going to be a star if he can reign in his immaturity.
Langdon was a late pick as an over age TAC Cup player. He has strengths but is a slow decision maker - will be a bottom 6 player in a strong side and that is ok.
Witts is pretty disappointing and i do think this has to do with a lack of true ruck coach.
Blairy is the best he can be (just can't get beyond aspiring to being even a Pies 6 footer)
Marsh is going very well given the speculative nature of our late pick.
Williams is disappointing. Not sure of his commitment to improvement. IS this his issue or the clubs ?
Broomhead - Injured and doesn't eat fruit or vegetables (or protein drinks or anything that could actively assist recovery).
Sier - No comment
Ox - Limitations but given he started from a long way back we are getting some reasonable footy from him.
Gault has clearly been a bust and must have some "dirt" on senior figures at the Holden Centre.

I respect your view because your posts have been well thought out. Putting these players to the side for the time being, do you think our development team are amongst the best in the AFL?

Didn't we swap Kennedy for Howe (a spectacularly good trade)?
Shhhhhh don't say such things, we are not allowed to do good trades. Only other teams

Without looking it up the deal was roughly: Seedsman -> second round pick (+ Kennedy) -> Howe and a fourth rounder
Great trading. Gave up two over-rated vanilla fringe players for a best-22 lock, who possesses some of the best kicking and overhead marking skills in our team. A terrific example of list improvement. Now if only we could do something similar with Blair......

From afl.com.au: THE SYDNEY Swans are yet to open talks to extend rising star Isaac Heeney's contract beyond next season, his manager Ben Williams says. "He's done a great job and he's obviously pretty happy there at the Swans, they've looked after him," Williams told NAB AFL Trade Radio. "But he is out of contract next year and it will be interesting to see what happens. They haven't come to us with a contract offer for Isaac, so we'll just wait and see there."

Young Isaac would look very handsome in black and white. Add him to the wishlist with Fyfe and Lynch.

The "how many f@#&n midfielders can we stack into one side" approach.......Hate it!

Maybe. I tend to think that we are selling Frost short but I guess we will see how he goes at his new club.
I define the success of a club's development system as the ability to get players to a level that they can meet and exceed the needs of the team within a defined role. We used to be very good at extracting the best out of players who appeared limited on the surface. The Doggies seem to be doing it well, I wonder if we have fallen behind the pack, and if so, why is that?

Well not having a player development manager in 2016 was a setback. Whatever we tried there was just an abject failure.

FWIW my take on development is continuous improvement on top of "getting the best out of a player". It could make for a good thread topic though!

Shocked to hear we didn't have someone running the development program! I had no idea.

That is surprising.
Very odd

Intetesting discussion going on between Lucas and Allen on SEN re a player not playing in a VFL Preliminary Final because they were told not to by a northern club. Intriguing hypothetical if you ask me...

I'm assuming they're talking about Frosty?

What's our list turnover been in comparison with other teams over the last 5 years?

Feels like we just trade out everyone.

We are often told about the club's continued quest to find that extra percentage that will lead to success. Perhaps the club has been too focused on "bespoke" guerneys instead of actual development programs.

One of the slides at the forum showed that we're basically top of the pops for list turnover. o_O

I think that slide followed the slide about us being a top 3 kicking side.

Yeah it wasn't our finest idea to avoid the FD tax.

I'm assuming they're talking about Frosty?

Completely hypothetical conversation and the hypothetical players name was Jack Freezer. Take it as given though that its the reason Frost missed the prelim.

Agree there.
Not fussed on the non football stuff making us a big club with big facilities or whatever.
Focus on football is the key

Wonder if the Tiger media like Caro, Warner, Bartlett, Ralph etc are going to be all over this like they were via their salty Treloar tears.

Surely colluding with a player to not play for a club he was still contracted to is a pretty large breach.

Remember someone on here saying that they heard that Frost refused to play. Pretty poor form from him and Brisbane if true.

Are we sure he didn't just fumble and lose his car keys?
