I'm here MMD waz your point?

He's had a long lay off & is 3 games into his comeback. I think I'll give him till the rest of the year at least before I re- asses.:)

Come on Rounds, that game you played on Harvey last year gave me hope that you could make it as a quick small defender. The Carlton game showed we need that type.

Any team fielding four ruckman would. It's absolute folly if you ask me. We might as well just concede games because the way the game is played now you just can't afford to carry that many immobile players. Considering one of the key advantages of fielding our own VFL side is the ability to mirror the game plan of the senior side we seem pretty intent on throwing away the opportunity. I don't see the seniors running around with a structure sporting four ruckman. It really boggles!

Where do you propose we let the young rucks develop at? I'd rather we had 3 - 4 learning the craft in the VFL then go back to the days of 1 senior and 1 VFL ruck like most of MM's career.

We need a reserves VFL side imo 2 in B's and 2 in the C's.

Getting a quality ruck out of the draft has eluded the club for a long time so i think they are hedging their bets a bit by having 4 in the magoos hoping 1 turns out good and 2 a bonus.

Playing a ruck at CHF and a ruck at FF doesn't teach them the art of rucking. What it does is ****s up the entire balance of our twos.

What has happened to all the Thomas lovers? Where are you?

Don't worry we haven't gone anywhere. I was there today, but unfortunately left my phone at home.

JT ATM seems to be a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. There are two players in this side that know where to run in order to receive JT and Seedy. Is it any coincidence that Seedy's improved out of sight this past month? It's because 60% of his outside ball is fed to him by JT. Converesly when it's JT that runs to the right spot it's Cribbin, Ferraro or Young feeding him and Young seems to have this mentality that the first option is never the right option (that Blaze is why he'll never make it).

JT's clearance work is far and away the best in the team. The unfortunate thing is that our rucks seem incapable of putting it in the right spots hence getting dominated in the clearances each week. If he is afforded the luxury of a full pre-season (something he's never had) he'll flourish.

As to the other notables Rounds was good, Farmer showed a bit, as did Gault and Krita was a lone hand down back. Finally Seedy will be senior best 22 this time next year he is a class above the VFL and another (complete) pre-season will get him as hardened as he'll need to be in order to make an impact at AFL level.

Hey im not a big young fan and would be a tad tempted to delist him at the end of this year... but jeez his performances have been far better than Josh Thomas. not just now but also over the past few years, however people STILL bash young and love j.thomas. I got SMACKED by all u JT lovers for saying delist j.thomas at the end of this year.. and every week it seems more likely i'll be in the right.

Take off the rose colored glasses and judge JT by what his given us.. his not AFL quality and some ppl wont see that, his got long term injury disease (which causes fans to massively over-rate him). We need to delist him end of this year(to make room), i want him to make it but this is my opinion.

You'd be crazy to make a call on Josh Thomas right now. How many VFL games are there for us, half a dozen or thereabouts? The bloke's been missing from the team, missing from competitive football, for a friggin' age. See how he's looking at the end of the season, and if he hasn't improved then you'd quite possibly look at rookieing him on upside alone. If he has, then this entire discussion is probably moot. But you sure as hell wouldn't be delisting him based upon his output in a couple of games back from a long-term injury.

Is it really all that surprising that Young's been better though? You've got one guy who's had a taste of AFL footy and should at least be starting to learn what is required to make it. Whereas the other guy just played his 3rd match in 12 months and anyone expecting him to be putting up 20 plus possession matches needs their head read....

I know you hadn't seen JT play prior to the past 3 weeks and based on what I've read on here since I doubt that you've gone to the effort of rectifying that yet still have a negative opinion on him. I'm not saying you aren't entitled to it its just that in order for it to carry any weight it needs to have some info to support it.

For instance would you be able to tell me how many effective tackles the team had today and how many of them would have been attributed to JT? Or what % of his possessions were contested? Or how many clearances he had? I think you'd be surprised at the way the numbers come out because despite not registering high numbers he has more meaningful possessions than any player in that team apart from Seedsman.

Lastly who would you prefer going forward the bloke that gets it 25 times, but burns it with half of those or the guy that gets 15 and does something positive with it every time?

FWIW the comments from the senior player group that attend the matches would be as good a guide as any as to where a player sits in the grand scheme of things. In the past 2 matches that I've attended the comments re JT have been glowing (Fas is a huge fan) and I for one would be shocked if he played the season out and got the chop.

J.Thomas did a few elite things by hand today I was wowed by, just bullets to blokes putting them in space.

Young was much better than usual choosing the right option most of the time and winning the contested ball and shovelling it out effectively.

Seedsman first half was class. Fantastic, awareness, running, evasion and penetration.

Gault could be a really, really handy player for us if he keeps developing. Good in the air, good on the deck, 6 foot 6.

Rounds' disposal early was abysmal, but got better as the game wore on. He looked to have the most power in his running on the ground, when he got the ball he had the ability to explode away from congestion.

I have been a Ugle fan, but today he was poor. He can often get ten touches and be very damaging, but today he got little ball and had little influence. He had his hamstring bandaged and looked to go for the loser's limp after he fumbled in the last and seemed to give the game away and indulged in self pity. He was started on the ball and needs to start getting more involved.

After half time the Pies went into Washington General's mode with some typically stupid and weak play. They may be young, a bit under manned, but gee their heads drop a bit quickly when the other team starts to turn up the heat.

Edit-I also think Farmer showed a bit of x-factor, with his hands and a booming goal. He looks to be one who they might have to really instill some confidence in, to see him flourish.

If you are going to criticise JT for his performance, just be aware it opens you up to have your performance critiqued.
The inability to correct ones repeated errors even after they are continually pointed out to you doesn't give you a great deal of room in which to move.

ridiculous comment
rucks need to know how to play forward
especially if you ever want to play 2 in the same side
each club needs to have multiple rucks on the list, you cannot only have 2, if one gets injured, then 2 you are in massive trouble. each club needs at least 3 probably 4 rucks all at various stages of development.
playing a young ruck forward in his early years also protects them from getting physically smashed in the ruck when they are not ready.

Yep, the importance of having a ruck was highlighted by StKilda when McEvoy went down, then their second ruck Stanley? went down too. They had to be filled in with some of their taller KPPs IIRC because they only have McEvoy as a specialist ruck.

consider it now a matter of principle. his principle.

The review for this week's game is now up here, taken a bit of a different tact this week.

I thought the team applied themselves well and were more than competitive in the first half, the game being well and truly up for grabs before they were overran in the second half. We seemed to focus on moving the ball a lot quicker coming out of defence, but really struggled once we got it to the wing/half-forward and things just broke down more and more as the game went on.

Luke Rounds was excellent and played like a man who knew his spot at the club was becoming tentative, if he backs that up in the next week or two I'd give him another crack at senior football. At the very least, performances like that one put pressure on the likes of Buckley and Clarke at senior level.

A bit strapped for time, so I'll just leave those who are interested to the review.

For those that watched the game where did Rounds play? Back, middle or forward? Great to see him get some continuity with his body at last.

As for those bashing JT, he is still our best AFL prospect along with Seedy IMO currently out of the side as youngsters. I'm just happy he is getting some games into him in a row. He will come good.

Luke said on the chat he played for the most part around half back. :thumbsu:

What happened to VFL listed Boland? The key forward dude. Hiding him for a possible rookie spot as a mature anger? Haven't seen him play. Just going purely on reports.
