I was preparing a much longer post, which I have saved if I can be arsed going back and finishing it, but the gist of it is that to bring in quality, you have to give up quality (in terms of either players, draft picks, or both). And Baker is quality. This is how we brought in Kerr, Chick, Stenglein, Masten, Kennedy and Redden.

We tend to trade out of the pointy end of the draft when we feel the list is nearing completion, and we need a couple of players to come in and fill specific gaps. Chick, Stenglein and Redden fit this bill. Jetta too, with the straight swap for Sinclair when we had Nic Nat, Lycett and later Vardy and Petrie on the list too.

Chick was 27 when he played his first game for us. He cost us Pick 8 in the 2002 draft.

The big difference is that the state of our list now is in far worse shape than our 2002 side that made the finals and boasted a midfield of Judd, Cousins and Kerr, a backline featuring Glass and Hunter (17 games in defence in 2002), and Gardiner and Cox in the ruck. Our forward line was a weakness, but Lynch and Hansen were on the list, as were TROY WILSON and Phil Matera. It was a young and inexperienced side, but the pieces were in place and performing at a level worthy of the top 8. Embley, Fletcher and Braun were alll running around too.

The list management team should be sacked on the spot if they entertain the thought of trading out of the first round this year (and this includes trading the first rounder(s) we should get for Barrass). Or next year. Or downgrading Pick 3.

Totally agree, you gain an advantage by drafting the Warners and Boltons in the 20’s and 30’s not by giving up multiple first rounders for them. Thought we’d learn that from the Kelly deal.

It just is.

Richmond has pick 1 in PSD. He isnt going to walk away for nothing...

PSD isn’t the be all and end all. Uncontracted players can enter themselves in the national draft, and have been able to do so for some time.

Baker’s uncontracted so he can leave. Bolton is contracted so Richmond can hang onto him if they don’t like what’s offered. This is not a difficult or controversial point, I would have thought.

Points of reflection
  1. 73% taken in first round (I used up to pick 20 as the cut off)
  2. 43% taken top 10
  3. 28% taken top 3
  4. 18% taken as a rookie/MSD
  5. 15% compromised (F/S, NGA or Northern Academy)
  6. Norf and GWS were gutless not selecting the obvious number 1 at 1 (Daicos and Ashcroft) but well done Crows with Jamarra)
  7. No R3 or R4 picks
Note to club - we need to nail the R1 picks and especially the pointy end ones.

Agreed.

Are there any actual examples of a club using the PSD to re-draft its own player who wants to leave?

I can't think of one.

And it's easy to understand why clubs wouldn't do that.

With the mass exodus of WA talent out of Richmond, hopefully will give them second thoughts of drafting WA talent in the future
I don't think they will be bothered at all. I'm pretty sure they were all told to have a look around if they wanted to avoid a long rebuild.

Win win for Tigers and them. The players move to competing teams for more $'s, and the Tigers get picks. Tigers not upset at all.

If he went to the PSD and said he wanted to only play in WA, the Tigers wouldn't take him. He'd end up in WA. But, players just don't want to do it. So it won't happen.

Jason Horny Frank?

Classy journalism.

I can’t think of any either.

I also can’t think of any examples of uncontracted players that have asked for a trade, the club hasn’t accepted a deal and the player has decided “oh well, guess I’ll just re-sign”.

Almost exclusively, the deal gets done or (far less often) they get where they want to go through one of the drafts.

One aspect also to ask.

Is it not a 100% no brainer that we trade our F2nd for one of Gold Coasts draft picks this year? Gold Coast will want more points for next year and our F2nd is the juciest of all the carrots they can be offered basically
GC will be sitting pretty decent next year. Fair chance of having 3 first round picks for next year already. Might still be a buyer though as they will try and move picks froward all the time with their academy

-Their own
-What ever team F1 pick they get for pick 12. Hope it’s the Hawks pick which we flip. Blues and Pies linked too.
-Ports for Lukisous

Also am I right in thinking that he would then be classed as a delisted free agent? So he could sign for one year and then go where he wants and tigers would get nothing?

He could re sign for one year and after that he’d be a free agent (either restricted or unrestricted depending on his salary), because he’d have been there eight years.

But he can’t delist himself and become a delisted free agent.

I heard the Crows apparently only did it as their draft intel had them and Dogs as the teams that were keen on James Rowe with a pick in the 30s. Made their points eat up a bit more.

Baker is never going to the PSD but ways of getting around it. Just put 1 year with stupid amount of dollars on his head. Would then just redo his contact to even it out over several years once the player gets to the team of their choice.

On the flip side, I feel a few of those players have been included simply because they were taken at the pointy end, and they are given extra weight because of assumed potential

It was reported that we were wanting a sweetener from the Hawks to go along with their R1 pick for Tom. It was also written (forget where) that we were asking for a player.

3 options here in the aricle (and I have ignored Frost as he is 31 not meeting at all our profile needed)
- Finn Maginnes (23) midfielder
- Ned Reeves (25) ruck
- Jai Serong (21) 3rd Tall defender since only 193 cm

Given I would prefer either Hawks pick 30 they got from Pies or a F1 giving back a F2 as the sweetener, I am not seeing any of these 3 players as a suitable sweetener. They are all positions of need for us so I am reading this and getting nervous.

From the article
Contracted Hawk Finn Maginness could seek more game time elsewhere as several clubs register their interest in the midfielder. Maginness, 23, managed only 13 games this season as he split his time between the senior side and the Box Hill Hawks. He performed well in the Hawks’ two finals, but spent a chunk of the middle part of the season playing in the VFL.

He is contracted until the end of next season but has received some interest from a handful of clubs including Essendon and Sydney.

Overlooked Hawthorn ruckman Ned Reeves and semi-final defender Jai Serong could also look at opportunities that could present in the coming weeks.

Reeves, 25, lost his spot in the senior side to Lloyd Meek this year, managing only four senior games. He is contracted until the end of 2026.

Serong, 21, was brought into the Hawks semi-final side which took on Port Adelaide after Sam Frost was ruled out with injury.

Both Frost and Serong have deals for next year.

Frost had attracted some interest from Sydney, but looks more likely to stay now with the prospect of an extra year on top of 2025.

Serong could also look at options with ready-made defenders Tom Barrass and Josh Battle certain to join the club next year.

If they’re the players being offered, I’d prefer a draft pick or exchange of picks like you’ve proposed

I’d also prefer their F2 to any of those three

What would they get for Maginness? Would we take that plus 13?

He could re sign for one year and after that he’d be a free agent (either restricted or unrestricted depending on his salary), because he’d have been there eight years.

But he can’t delist himself and become a delisted free agent.

Even if he goes through the psd and gets redrafted by them?
