Latest news and rumours

Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Is it just me or do clubs keep rehashing the same offers with us?

Carlton: "We will give you 12 and 14 for 3."

WCE: "No."

Carlton: " How about 14 and 12?

Open Letter to Liam Baker

Dear Liam

If you really love the Eagles, you will do the right thing and re-sign with the Tigers for 1 year more season. After that year, you then hit the free agency mark at the end of 2025. Ideally it sets you up as an UFA but given Richmond have few real stars to pay, it may just be a RFA. The option is for you to avoid the Dockers and take a modest contract that is not in the top 25% at Tigerland.

If your desire to be back in Perth is that strong, please swallow your pride and do the mighty Eagles a favour and agree to wear the purple. Greater love hath no man but to lay down your playing career for the good of a club. Not ideal, but that is the cost of you trying to come home prior to FA yet asking for the club to pay your old club overs.

PS. We apologise for taking Ryan Burrows 5 picks before you in the rookie draft in 2017. Like we regret taking Brander at pick 13 earlier that week.
I'd edit it down to
G'day champion
We're really looking forward to having you at the eagles. But if you want to play in a competitive team before you retire let us grab you pick 3 in the PSD. This whole "fair" compensation for Richmond isn't going to fly
Cheers

You didn't really maximise that. We could potentially get 25 round 6 picks.
FFS, does the club know we are into a rebuild and need to take these high draft picks and get quality players...everyone is expecting a few more lean seasons but it sounds like what they are doing is to maybe just maybe get a couple of exta wins next season. = FAIL.
Wake up Pykey.

I don't disagree with the rest of your post, but half of our list in under 21; we have a dearth of players Baker's age, especially leaders, which probably explains our interest.
This simply isn’t true. I’ve posted the 21-25 and 25-30 lists a few times. We are desperately short in that 21-25 eange
We have plenty of 27-30 year olds. It’s why we are trading one of them out…

Picks 12 & 14 is Chesser territory. Why can’t we do what Geelong is doing in the Bailey Smith trade? Is Baker really a priority? Baker is the only OOC player from the group of Richmond players who want out and thus should yield them the least return.

Pay as little as possible, PSD or just walk away and let Fremantle have him. Fremantle burning all their first round picks this year on Bolton and Baker might actually be good for us.

Couldn’t we borrow Vozzo from Essendon in return for a F3 or something just to handle the trade negotiations for the next two days?

I think we need to relax. People were melting last year think we were going to cough up Harley. We never did.

No one at the club has ever said were coughing up #3. No one said we'd trade 14 for Baker, either.

I'm confident we won't cough up #3 unless it's for 5 and 9 (won't be offered). I'm not as confident with Baker, but holding me melt. For now.

In 4 years who are our senior players who might be best 22? Baker, Allen, Waterman, Duggan, maybe HEdwards? and thats about it, theyll all be 28-31. Rest will be 25 or under
Yes we might get some other players traded in or some free agents, but eve if we bump that mature age bracket to 6-7 players in 4 years time, thats still not a lot.

Need players at Bakers age bracket.
Who will be our 24-28 year olds ?

Literally no one

Ah Chee for a future 3rd.

Seems.....cheap?

Whats the go? Perpetually injured or something?
That “future” third is still six years expired.
If I’ve done my charting right, that future third was used by Brisbane via a whole heap of trades to get Tom Joyce, who ended up on our list as a supplementary signing after being delisted, but did his ankle before playing for us though.

Sounds like Rioli and late picks for 6 and 23 is just about done.

I wonder if Richmond would trade 6, 23 and Baker for our F1 and Hawks or Carlton F1.

Reckon we'll want those picks for Warner.

You’re Cleary a rookie and don’t know how it works in here. It’s the best part of trade week, watching posters loose there minds over stuff they can’t control.
