58/59 will be close-ish to the end of the draft. They will come in, but it is a deep draft so pick 50 vs 60/65 or even RD are all pretty similar.

Outside of that it is a lot of effort and cost to get an extra pick inside the first 12.

Sure, we get Baker (can be done independently of the hawks F1), but give up the hawks F1 and our F2 plus downgrade 3 to 6 to facilitate it (and get 9).

2x 1sts this draft and 2x next draft is a better option imo. Balances out our build.

How's the next draft shaping up at the top end compared to this draft?

Unless they get some later picks in trades would they bother bidding at 63?
No chance they're bidding at 27 (wherever that ends up actually being)
If they keep the majority of their first round picks, I reckon they'd be petty enough to have a crack with 27

Fremantle are likely trading for Bolton, possibly Baker and are looking at Martin

Why would they bid as early as 27 on Champion who isn’t rated that highly in any rankings I’ve seen

-27 probably becomes late 30's
  • not sure Martin/baker be on their radar
  • small fwd an area they need
  • son son is old af and like for like

Martin has done a medical with them

Baker is considered 60/40 between us and Freo based on what’s been reported

I haven’t seen Champion rated inside the top 40 by most ratings so even if 27 slips into the 30’s it’s still high

If the Dockers secure Baker, they won't have pick 27.

Keys I wouldn't be too worried about Champion being bid on early as IMO I think he will go really late and could even be a rookie.

I have plenty of players that I would draft before him as I think he has been very underwhelming this year.

I agree

Was posting in response to a suggestion Freo might lodge a bid as early as 27 which made no sense

Think we’re safe with pick 59 being sufficient to match a bid as that covers anything from 45 onwards

I don't particularly want us chasing or paying a premium for him him either, but there's really no point referencing Bakers stats fellas. He's the opposite of a chip scab or someone who pads stats. His value is more than that.

He's highly rated for a reason. He's a quality player, without carrying the tag of being a star. The bloke has won the award for the AFL's most courageous player and carries respect across the entire competition. Legit the opposite of Tim Kelly as far as leadership goes IMO.

Wouldn't say no to that sort of leadership coming to Flag Coast to set an onfield/offfield example for our younger players.

If you can get all that guaranteed for a second round pick (23) it might be annoying, but really not the end of the world. I want to load up on top 30 picks this draft as much as anyone but it's not all doom and gloom with Baker if we do end up getting him, a bit of perspective is needed.

Our team is instantly better with Baker in it. Regardless of how many people think he's a shit utility/nothing player.

Now, if you'll excuse me..

Yeah it's a bit odd sometimes, some players get derided because they have no positional versatility, some do because they've got too much

Baker wasn’t on our Cat B list. He was moved to the rookie list last year to make space for Livingstone. Dewar is the other Cat B rookie

If there’s no bid on Champion we’d need to promote Dewar to the rookie list and then take Champion as a NGA (Cat B)
Or rookie list champion?

Do you think a surcharge will cause the death of regional and nga academies ? Im sure it would be detrimental to the afl with less kids coming through professional programs as seen with the drop in indigenous players recently . Clubs would have no reason to spend money on academies at all . Maybe the afl could cover the costs of all academies and take away any priority selections besides father son access.

The reason for NGA to continue is the free access they get to match any bid.

That is a massive advantage even if they get 1 good player through over a few years.

I’m not 100% on the rules but my understanding is we can match a bid in the main draft and if there’s no bid we can prelist him as a Cat B rookie but not as a regular rookie listed player

And there’s no matching in the rookie draft, so if we didn't list him as a Cat B, Richmond or North could draft him before our pick

So if there’s no bid we move Dewar onto the rookie list, like we did with Baker last year, then prelist Champion as a Cat B after the main draft

Terrible deal for us. Terrible.

Please let Cockburn come to the party and draft him so we have no choice in the matter.

How would that deal be terrible for us?
