I was assuming he was being re-rookied just to free up a main draft selection.

If he is gone I wonder if that means Winder gets a repreive?

If I had the call I would be keeping Winder and get him playing midfield, maybe a wing.
We currently still only have 5 spots free. Hurn will soon re-sign. If we keep both West & Winder, and delist Trew. We'll only have 6 spots.
4 taken in the ND, 1 from the rookie draft and another opening for a train on player. I'd prefer us to delist Winder and possibly pick him back up in RD if there are no better options, so we have the flexibility to draft an extra player from the ND or RD with 7 spots free.

Well, after my previous post in support.

Reading the news article, the language used by Gavin Bell, he’s gone.

It sounds that way.

Just very un West Coast like to delist and pay out a player under contract.

Have we ever done that?

Im hoping it means one of Hotton or Bergiel are targets. Both would make good mid / forwards. Both with serious pace.

"We currently still only have 5 spots free. Hurn will soon re-sign..."

Hope not...the backline should be ok once Cole and Yeo are fit and healthy along with new addition J Hunt.

The club has already confirmed they are just waiting to sort out his contract once he returns from his holiday. Hurn himself doesn't want to retire and the club is willing to oblige with letting him go on for another year.

I'd be very happy with Hotton. He seems like a very good prospect. Unfortunately we'll probably have to choose between him & Hewett. Don't have the picks to pick both unless one of them slides.

Or we trade for pick 18 or 19 from the Giants.

12 and Ports F2nd for 15 and 18.

Hewett plus one of Hotton, Hustwait or Burgiel.

Hurn is a dead set champion.

However I just cant see any benefit for him to play one more season when we need list spots to rebuild with.

I feel crappy saying it but its the truth.

So with the unexpected early exits of Langdon and Redden let’s take a look at the out of contracts for this time next year:

Likely retirements:
Luke Shuey
Shannon Hurn

Possible retirements but likely to play on:
Jeremy McGovern
Jamie Cripps

Possible delistings:
Xavier O’Neill
Luke Foley
Alex Witherden
Sam Petrevski-Seton
Jack Petrucelle
Jake Waterman

Should be safe:
Greg Clark
Jack Williams

It’s too far out to really make calls obviously but that’s likely a lot of list spaces up for grabs next year, good thing we hold an extra pick or two.

Shuey, Hurn, Witherden, SPS it’s hard to imagine playing on in 2024. Cripps feels like he has some legs but may get tapped on the shoulder.

O’Neill and Foley are lineball, with the former probably showing a bit more than the latter although neither are safe. Petrucelle and Waterman probably need a good year to be extended but both may survive due to the other list changes plus lack of list depth in their respective positions.

You’d think Clark and Williams will be extended but with the lack of game time for Clark this year I wonder if he is truly safe.

Regardless we’re probably looking at 6+ list changes, and that would be on the conservative end. We currently hold 6 picks in the first four rounds of next year so we may go back to the well for a DFA this time next year.
Possible delistings - O'Neil Petrecelle?

Should be safe - Clarke ?

WTF.

Clarke is an easy delisting . Slow midfield plodder that doest have afl qualities

Petrecelle and O'Neil ? Both have afl qualities we lack .

Petrecelle could be a game changer if he could stay on the park

O'Neill not a gun can be a good honest foot soldier with pace , skill and good mix of inside outside game

I wonder if Hurn could have a change of mind like Reddo. He had a very fine 2022 season but we are in a rebuild and I could see him possibly declining again next year. Otherwise the club has to choose between a young player like Winder and him, although I don't think Winder would be a major loss either way.

Personally think O'Neill is just a list plodder.

I understand young tall players take a while to develop, but I think we need to see some fair improvement from young Jack Williams this year.
I watch most of our wafl games this year and thought he was pretty good .

If we had a decent amount of inside 50s he would have had an above average year .

He is a big boy growing into his body , has a good tank , good leading patterns , good set shot , also plays ruck to an adequate degree , hasn't been injured and is very coachable by reports

He is still only 18 until December.

Put it this way . He will have had 3 pre- seasons and played 3 years before he is even 21 .

The fact he is 198cms and already a unit is a very good sign

I feel very optimistic about Jack Williams, although he had a lot of quiet games stat-wise, I thought he looked pretty good whenever I saw him in the WAFL.
Just need to harden up his body with a few more preseasons so he can match up against AFL players.
I just hope we give him plenty of time to develop, only thing that concerns me is that we may not afford him as much time considering we drafted him late.

It blows my mind why anything thinks picking jones with a top 20 pick is a good idea......
He seems very much like bobby Hill. Too small to impact at afl level except getting on the end of other work .

The gap is size just out grows these players from u18s to afl level .

Great highlight package though

You do realise that players need to be able to play multiple positions and that initially some dont have the strength nor endurance to start on ball?

And often there is an established pecking order.

You would be unhappy for Yeo and Ginbey to rotate on ball and in defense?

Or Chesser and Duggan to rotate off a wing and defense?

Clark, Hewett, Phillapou and Culley to rotate off the ball, HFF and the bench?

When we bring in players specifically from other clubs, we make them adjust to a new position and new game plan rather than play them in the preferred position.

Draftees is a bit different, but we seem to always roll out the veterans in the same positions year on year. Shuey and Kelly could be damaging forwards but they’ve played in the guys for their full TOG. Meanwhile a young player coming through has had to play hff.

IMO this has led to our lack of midfield depth.

Why on earth were people describing him as pacey on the Welcome Langdon thread when we got him?

Was he quicker at GWS? Like, what on earth happened to him when we got him...all of a sudden slow and can't kick goals...

I reckon people thought he was Brent Daniels

Maybe the recruiting team did too!

I’m failing to see the issue here.

Are the Hawks openly and blatantly tanking?

Yes.

Is it a smart/legitimate rebuild strategy?

Yes.

(I’m a Philadelphia 76’ers fan who lived through the Hinkie era, if anyone knows about tanking, it’s a 76’er fan)

Is it a good look?

No.

Will it be hotly debated for the next 36 months?

100%.
This video is hosted by Will Schofield… and is brilliant. The West Coats & Hawks parts are revealing.
The obvious honesty, clear chemistry between the two, and brilliant info is strikingly refreshing.
This is what a footy show should be: it is so very watchable.

If anyone has any doubt that Sam Mitchell will take the Hawks high on the ladder… and that the word Tanking is rediculions for him... Watch the video.

I know I was supposed to be OUT. But that was my John Farnham OUT (until the next Concert) 😂.

I am out again, this time… only Robbie Williams could resurrect me.

Just to temper your expectation that guttin the medical team and replacing it would be the panacea......when covid hit the AFL stripped the soft cap by a third.

At the end of 2021 12 of the 18 AFL club chief.medical doctors quit. Why? Because the club's couldn't pay what they're worth in the real world. The same happened with the physios. I know 3 physios here in Victoria that had there clubs go from 6 physio and countless other professionals, exercise physiologist, strength and conditioning, from consultant Pilates instructors to yoga teachers get decimated. Go do a google search for head physio for most AFL clubs and you'll see the staff are inexperienced BC they cost less.

Until medical is exempt from soft cap, AFL clubs won't be getting the best of the best.
