I hope we announce West, Winder and Trew's contract status soon.
Can't see what's taking so long.
Trew seems like a formality. West should be a simple 1 year extension. If we aren't sold on Winder we could delist him and pick him up again in the rookie draft if we can't find a better alternative.

So with the unexpected early exits of Langdon and Redden let’s take a look at the out of contracts for this time next year:

Likely retirements:
Luke Shuey
Shannon Hurn

Possible retirements but likely to play on:
Jeremy McGovern
Jamie Cripps

Possible delistings:
Xavier O’Neill
Luke Foley
Alex Witherden
Sam Petrevski-Seton
Jack Petrucelle
Jake Waterman

Should be safe:
Greg Clark
Jack Williams

It’s too far out to really make calls obviously but that’s likely a lot of list spaces up for grabs next year, good thing we hold an extra pick or two.

Shuey, Hurn, Witherden, SPS it’s hard to imagine playing on in 2024. Cripps feels like he has some legs but may get tapped on the shoulder.

O’Neill and Foley are lineball, with the former probably showing a bit more than the latter although neither are safe. Petrucelle and Waterman probably need a good year to be extended but both may survive due to the other list changes plus lack of list depth in their respective positions.

You’d think Clark and Williams will be extended but with the lack of game time for Clark this year I wonder if he is truly safe.

Regardless we’re probably looking at 6+ list changes, and that would be on the conservative end. We currently hold 6 picks in the first four rounds of next year so we may go back to the well for a DFA this time next year.

Thing is, regarding Langdon, it might have been better if everyone had regarded his own limitations. As a forward in modern AFL, its basically accept that you should be able to kick at least 40 meters

But when Langdon got that ball from 40-50m out it was embarrassing because he should be able to make the distance but he knew, and we all knew, that he was no chance of kicking that goal but he was obligated to have a crack anyway

Its sad because he actually seemed to do leg work at the gym but could still barely kick 30 meters despite that

Agile, versatile, determined: The diminutive all-rounder with genuine X-factor

According to afl.com.au, Darcy Jones was interviewed multiple times by GWS who hold picks 15, 18 and 19. If they think that we are going to draft him then they will probably take him with one of those picks because we have 2 picks before their next pick (31). Think we should try (provided we are keen on Jones) trading 12 & 20 to Sydney for 14 & 17.

If GWS is going that early on Jones there's nothing we can do other than wait until he requests to come home.

Be nice if we could add him to our side with 20 or 26, but we've got bigger problems to address with picks 8 and 12.

8 & 14 is almost the same as 8 & 12. We pick Jones with 17 instead of 20. Hawthorn is the other team mentioned in the article and their second pick is before 26. Of course, GWS could still pick him with 15. If this is the case, it is not like there’s nothing we could do - we could still fold the club.

Can't see why Sydney would even be interested in that deal. There's very little of an upgrade for them. I can perhaps only see this happening if they want a player that Melbourne might take before them at their 1st pick (most likely on draft night).
If they want to trade those picks they would be looking to trade up higher. Like 14 & 17 for pick 8. Maybe they can throw in a little sweetener like a trade of 2023 picks.

I wouldn't be against that. Could clearly work in our favour.

I would say 99% gone. His only chance at a lifeline, as I see it, is if there is nobody in the rookie draft we seem worthy of picking up. Then we may rookie Langdon simply because we are paying him either way. This way would have 100k of his salary available to put into a war chest for future free agents.

Radical idea but maybe if they pull that card then ban then from that years draft. Draft tampering is against the rules so if they are openly breaking that rule and telling clubs they won’t go interstate maybe is time to enforce that rule.

Make sure all interviews are recorded with the AFL running over them making sure the rules are being followed.

Not sure this would actually ever work though can imagine it would open a can of worms.
Maybe clubs want the answer to the players thoughts on staying home.

The last thing we would need is to put 2 years into Wardlaw and trade him back to Victoria for pick 13 and a future 1st.

According to Ryan D. And the West he’s gone! I’ve only heard rumours of rookie listing. What have you heard?

I was assuming he was being re-rookied just to free up a main draft selection.

If he is gone I wonder if that means Winder gets a repreive?

If I had the call I would be keeping Winder and get him playing midfield, maybe a wing.
