Cripps was in great form the end of last year, he was one actually holding up his end of the deal.

You want to pick a small forward to show they can push through, set the standard and earn their spot then it’s Liam Ryan.

Good for him. He can probably earn his way back then and help the reserves along the way.

Simmo got to ruffle some feathers at the start

Let's be real here... that lot only got a look in this year because we were at times literally in dire straights for personnel due to injuries.

Under normal circumstances it doesn't happen very often, or if it does, the rookie isn't given any leeway and 1 poor game would mean straight back to the WAFL.

It's like saying "See! See! The club also gave a debut to Black, Dewar, Ainsworth, Florenca... we've blooded so many new players! Simmo doesn't really do credits!" etc etc.

Put our injured "stars" back on the park and we'd likely (i'm saying 'likely' here as i don't know for certain and can imagine someone like FiveKent getting hurt in the rectum over this comment) have played the same stale team which disappointed us in 2020 and everyone's favourite season 2021.

It's why 2022, despite being awful, was a year we needed to have, of sorts. We wouldn't have Culley, that's for sure. Langdon would likely still be on the list for 2023, potentially also Trew and Winder (if they were actually contracted).

I do kind of agree, in that we seemingly loved trotting out the same stale team with no real consideration of dumping underperforming seniors.

But I think this is largely caused by the truly abhorrent state of our WAFL depth players, rather than the credits thing. Every once in a blue moon when we actually have a decent young player available I think Simmo and the MC have showed a willingness to play them, even in years when we're contending for finals.

But yeah fully agree 2022 will hopefully end up being a positive, having saved us from wasting another year or two treading water mid-table.

My problem with Frederick and Narkle is that it will take away games from Hough, Chesser, Culley and whoever we get this year.

We aren’t seriously challenging for another 2 years so it feels lame to rookie them.

The sooner we get 50 games into the above named and Phillipou/McKenzie/Ginbey/Hewett etc the better we will be in 2025
No it won't. That's like saying SPS took games away from Hough or Culley. All are clearly held in high regard and will have priority over a couple of late pick-ups playing for their career. Frederick and Narkle would have to earn their place ahead of practically everyone at the club.

Exactly.

2018: Willie, Ryan, Venables, Allen, Brander, Ainsworth, Cole, Waterman all got games. Not sure after that Simmo was all like that's it, credits are locked in, no more kids get a game. **** em. Even if we tumble down the ladder, **** THEM.

Even when we're winning, we do find stil ways to give games to draftees.

Look at Venables, Waterman, Allan, Rioli, Ryan in 2018. Brander and Petrucelle in 2019 even. Cameron as well.

It's the free pass for past hero's, senior "stars" etc etc whilst younger players are treated more harshly at the selection table which puts people offside. Still shaking my head after our biggest team lifting win of the year vs preliminary finalist Collingwood, when we subsequently tufed everyone for an underdone Shuey, Kelly, and Yeo, only to go on and be obliterated by Sydney in front of a home crowd without giving a whimper. Much to nobody's surprise on here.

Clark is an interesting one. You'd think 2022 of all seasons he'd get first dibs on an inside midfielders spot... nope. Gaff is obviously in his own bubble when it comes to form. Ranking wise, this was his worst season since 2013. Curious about his role next year.

Gaff is a prime candidate for a senior player to be dropped to the WAFL if he reproduces his form from this year

I just don't see how Gaff fits into our side next year...He worked for our old style, not so much the new, even if he does find some form out on a wing, he's slow and kicking lacks both penetration and speed on ball.

So Ryan gets a pass from your ‘stick it to the established players’ plan because he’s 26?

He’s exactly the kind of guy who needs a rocket - not tireless workers like Cripps.

Gee Cripps cops a bad rap on here. He is quite consistent, rarely goes missing for big chunks of game. Has hit the scoreboard regularly over the last two years when we've been shiiiiiite.

Cripps has previous history of showing poor form for 4-5 games before eventually coming good. Simmo backs him in a fair bit. He's the epitome of credits.

That said, his work ethic is NEVER questioned on here, and rightly so, it's elite. It's the fumbles and dirty 3 touch play, often at the end of a teammates good work which causes frustration.

I want him to be held accountable just like any player, but our forward line pressure would be a total joke without him. Ryan going to chase is he? Petrucelle? Ha. Cripps is crucial right now. Hopefully D.Jones can help with that.

I love Ryan, but you're right about his forward pressure.

Below average on tackles inside 50, 1%s, and spoils.

The other issue is, once simmo discovered he had a tank, he started getting used out of his position. Then the injuries crept in with all the down the ground running. Our forward structure needs him deep. In fact with JK gone, smo should play darling up the ground, Allen CHF and Ryan deep in the square.

So what I'm hearing is Darling to the midfield?

Given how recruits from other clubs generally fail to fire when they first join West Coast (except Sharrods juicy first season in 2013) i've got a feeling Hunt has whipping boy written all over him. Initially anyway.

Can't wait to date Sponsor him :moustache:
Great post.

Redden and Jetta both struggled initially, then were crucial cogs in the 18 Premiership.

Let's wait until at least Round 3 before going on a Hunt hunt.

Didn't Wellingham break his ankle on a trampoline in his first preseason and missed half the year ?

Yep, he should be introduced to the concept of "no train, no game" in 2023.
Speaking of this my mate at the club has revealed some things about rioli now he is gone . Was a real eye opener .

last on the track first to leave

always complain about tight hammies and calves to get out of the hard training

could never be left to train on his own without someone supervising

couldn't be trusted to do his recovery by himself

never kept attention during planing meetings and struggled to play his defined role . Always had to be simplified.

Always said just ' let me play ' in regards to playing his role .

Simmo didn't like having both rioli and Ryan in the same forward line because they are lazy at applying defensive pressure .

No surprise to any of that.

It’s why some of us were happy to see him go, the group doesn’t need distractions as we transition to a much younger age pool. Keep the older professionals that can set the standards and are good role models both on and off the track.
