I love Ryan, but you're right about his forward pressure.

Below average on tackles inside 50, 1%s, and spoils.

The other issue is, once simmo discovered he had a tank, he started getting used out of his position. Then the injuries crept in with all the down the ground running. Our forward structure needs him deep. In fact with JK gone, smo should play darling up the ground, Allen CHF and Ryan deep in the square.

Ryan’s in the goal square…

This could and should be our chaos ball/hunter swung forward type of approach for next year!
I’d be all for something new/less predictable in 2023…

Speaking of this my mate at the club has revealed some things about rioli now he is gone . Was a real eye opener .

last on the track first to leave

always complain about tight hammies and calves to get out of the hard training

could never be left to train on his own without someone supervising

couldn't be trusted to do his recovery by himself

never kept attention during planing meetings and struggled to play his defined role . Always had to be simplified.

Always said just ' let me play ' in regards to playing his role .

Simmo didn't like having both rioli and Ryan in the same forward line because they are lazy at applying defensive pressure .

Can't say any of this is surprising given what we've seen over the years

And yet, he was still a vital cog in our team.

Wouldn't have won the flag in 2018 without him, probably wouldn't have even made the GF. Also very good In our flag defense year of 2019, before it all went bad.

Shit talking after he leaves is fine, but don't pretend his entire career at West Coast was all bad.

What was Luke Edwards issue last year?

Any chance he could take the next step in 23?

He looked quite good in his few games

Battled with OP all season

Hopefully those problems are behind him

What about this Charlie Clarke kid?

Small forward. likes to niggle. Good around the goals.

We need a genuine small fwd.

Maybe be around our pick 26

I would be happy if we picked him up, displays a lot the characteristics that our team needs and lacks.
Bonus is that he is a very handy backup mid to take a rotation and he would be an ideal Cripps replacement.

Your are right in saying that he is a niggle, antagonistic, in your face type player..... plays on the edge with attitude.

Nuggety little player already.

Lot to like about him. :whitecheck: :thumbsu:

Good tackler and would apply a lot of forward pressure.

Also good in heavy traffic and quite slippery.

He's about my 4th preference for our pick 26 but would very happily draft him. Playing HF at afl level though is a tough gig and he needs to improve his goalkicking.

Same.

I'd go Clarke if both Jones and Hotton are gone. You'd think addressing our glaring small forward stock would be on O'Briens shopping list.

If Hotton was taken with say pick 20 for example, then i wouldn't bother with Clark at 26.

If we select someone else (Allen) with 20, then i'd be all for using 26 on the best small forward option still available. Hotton > Jones > Clarke > Konstanty.

Did a great interview on SEN the other day with Gerard Healy and Brad Johnson asking him lots of questions. Kid just wants to play, doesn't care less where.

I have him in the 25-30 range.
As I have said previously we sit in a very interesting spot with pick 20 & 26.
We could find that there has already been a bit of a late first round run on tall's and then we sit pretty for a drifting mid.
Conversely there could be a run on small to mids that see some tall's drift.
Barnett is a player that I am intrigued to see when he comes off the board as he is a scarce commodity.
I would take him before Keeler ........ speaking of intriguing players.

I can’t see The PieMan & Co going 4 mids / smalls, in this draft.
So I am expecting at least one tall.

If we can absolutely nail 3 mids smalls that we really rate at 8, 12, 20 then I can see us using 26 on a tall.

Would you prefer us to pull the trigger on Barnett at 20 (If still there), then pick up Clarke at 26 for team balance but then probably miss out of Hotton for example?

If both Hotten Barnett are there at 20, I would take Hotten.

Also if we nailed three quality mids with our first three picks: EG Ginbey, Hewett/Phillipou, Hotten.
With Barnett most likely gone at 26, I can see us being prepared to reach at 26 and pick up a KPP that might be rated a bit latter on most boards.

We need to keep remembering that this draft is only the second, of five drafts, needed to address our rebuild.

Chesser, Hough, Bazzo, J Williams & Culley was a good start.
Four more this year.
Four - five more in the 2023 draft.
Four more in the 2024 draft.
Four more in the 2025 draft

If half of them turn out then we are well on the way, to rebuilding our list.
