Mods are we doing a little guess the draft picks competition thread?

Competition thread is now up and running

I’ve read all 604 pages of this thread (yes I know, what a loser!) but can confidently say that if we select Mackenzie at 8 (or 9), everybody will be happy.

You know I’m right.

You can even tell the missus to sleep in the spare bed if we get Hewitt at 13.

Bid for Ashcroft at 1 needs 2400 points. At pick 2, that reduces to 2014

Brisbane have 2238 in points this draft. So worst case they have a deficit of 162 points, best case a surplus of 224 points. They can match a bid at pick 2, without using pick 55 which means that becomes 52 after using their 4 picks in the thirties to match

Best case gives Brisbane 246 points with 52 plus 17 points left over if they can be carried forward

A bid for Fletcher at our first pick (now 13) would require 970 points to match

They’d then have to find an additional 1132 points (worst case) or 707 (worst case)

They have F3 picks tied to the Bulldogs and Richmond plus their own they can trade 2 of for picks this year. Based on this years positions that’s 533 points available
Depending on what picks they get they have a deficit of 599 (worst case) or 174 (best case) that would be applied to the Geelong F2 they have which can’t be traded.

A bid on Fletcher by say Collingwood (with 17) would require 820 points so reduces all those numbers by only 150

TLDR - a bid at pick 1 for Ashcroft does make it tricky for Brisbane to match a first round bid for Fletcher but not impossible
When using future picks/points, the AFL assigns those picks as the last pick in each round.

So a second round pick is assigned as pick 36, a third round pick is assigned pick 54.

If you have multiple picks, such as we do in the third round, it will be picks 54, 53 and 52. Plus pick 36 and our assigned fourth round pick would be 72.

So Jhye Clark is back in flavour?

A couple of weeks ago, a couple of posters had alot of negatives on him. The early reports is he is the best option for a guaranteed 200 game player.

I have no idea but i get the feeling if we get one of; Poo, Clark Mackenzie = good, Ginbey = Bad
I would be over the moon if we picked up clark !

He is the set and forget leader of your midfield for a decade . Selwood , cotchin , cunnington all come to mind as that type .

I would love it if we ended up with clark. Only thing stopping us is he does not have explosive speed which we seem to be obsessed with at the moment. I feel the only we he gets past Geelong’s pick is if Tsatas is there.

When have Geelong been predictable? Very rarely

Main takeaways for me
• Likely taking a mid at 8 which rules out Busslinger with our first pick
• Not planning on any pick swaps but remain open minded if something beneficial like last year materialises
• Will decide on the night whether to use our 5th pick but expect to fill all 7 list spots via main and rookie drafts
• Both Dewar and Baker are NGA options and will be rookie listed if available
Did you read anything into taking a tall at 12?

Awesome . A speedy half back flanker (tick) that has proven he can play forward (tick)or mid (tick) as well.
Who says no

Burgiel is a mid who can play forward primarily but he can play all over the ground. It's why i prefer him to a couple of others who are more forwards who can play mid etc. If he's there at our fourth pick i'd love him. Third pick if other options are off the table. At the airport on way back to melbourne. I'm going to hate this weekend.

It's hard to see Allan being a bust. He's 194cm dual sided runner with elite hands. It's more than possible he doesn't make the transition to playing on the ball at AFL level, given his height he doesn't need to be an inside midfielder to succeed.

Rangey kid who is weak body on body, until he grows into it and bullies the 5'11 mids going in the top three picks?

See few issues with Ginbey making it as an inside midfielder. A natural clearance game is there, transition work and accumulation isn't there at the moment.

From what I have seen Allan has a touch of the Mortons in regards to body contact. Have I seen enough of him, debatable. But it's why I rate him lower than a lot of others.

Ginbey i see as being reactive at clearances so whilst he gets the ball there i'm of the opinion that as of the moment its due to superior athleticism and size. I put a fair amount of weight in regards to that in particular. I want a midfielder who is at least good to elite in regards to reading the play and clearance work inside against his own draft class if we are using a top 20 pick on them as an inside mid. If he's just average at it at juniors, I think it will get found out at the higher level. He could do a Yeo and he has a very strong desire to improve. However i've been watching him play since U14's for Dunsborough and he was never really a mid. He played more HF or HB there before his time in the WAFL system.

Over the course of the weekend I will know the likely permutation out to pick 12 (thats inclusive of Ashcroft) but won't be able to post on players or anything else until after the draft. Can then give some insight in regards to picks and why they were taken where.

I'm just about to check in now so hope everyone has a good day and weekend.

He definitely left the door open for that didn’t he which likely means Busslinger if he slides or Jefferson as possibilities

According to Mitch Cleary “Sydney’s list management team has in the last 24 hours ratified a decision to put its picks 14 and 17 on the trade table to clubs wanting to get into this year’s #AFLDraft first-round.

Clubs have been told the Swans want strong assets in next year’s draft”

Interesting, but don’t think we want to give up our picks for next year.

Yep. I think you'll find it's fairly universal on here that Mckenzie would be a good get. Not many knocks on his game from anyone.

Balanced, inside and out, big bodied, hits the scoreboard, previous history playing half back :whitecheck:

I'll give you a little bit of info. Clark doesn't particularly like the cats. Not to say that means they won't draft him but we'll see.

I would think about possibly giving our future second for 17. It doesn’t seem like it’s giving Sydney a premium but if next year draft is reportedly stronger then it evens it out. I suspect though Sydney would be looking at a future first

Sounds like we will be picking up Baker & Dewar on the Cat B rookie list if they get through the main draft.

Dewar I think we would match a bid after 40 but I don’t think we would on Baker.

Hopefully they both make it onto the Cat B list as it opens up that 5th pick on the draft & the 2 rookie picks to get even more talent into the club.

Yeah I think that’s right. Hard to see anyone giving a future first unless it’s likely to be late (maybe Bris or Geelong?) or there’s father sons in the first round next year.

Say the line

I’ll delete…..

Mckenzie vs Clark vs Tsatas all on the board at our first selection would be interesting.

Gee. Not sure who I'd go there.

Mckenzie very neat..
but also pretty plain Jane, and a Vic Metro bed wetter.

🧐

Tyrell Dewar doubt will get to CAT B in a draft that sounds shallow in depth.
