Reading the HUN mock, I like the fact that we have done a lot of work on Mackenzie.

He is my tip for us at pick 8

Saints will be pissed and look to possibly go Jefferson to partner King.
Blues are on record to say they want midfield - especially outside run so Hollands and Allen look right
Bulldogs are supposedly tossing up outside speed or KPD so Allen or Busslinger.

So if we take Mackenzie with 8, we could well get Ginbey at 12.

I’ve never seen any of the potential draftees play, I only know them by their draft rankings and would recognise a few faces if shown a pictures.

So, with that in mind, I think I want:

Ginbey, Hewett, Allan and Jones

or Busslinger instead of Allan and hope Hewett slides.

My intel suggests this is unlikely to happen now that I have said it.

I get visions of Ben Johnson when I see the write up on Smith.

Exactly.

I never never NEVER got the outlandish hype around Johnson. He always looked lame to me. Yet i heard everything from speedy rebounding defender to "hurn replacement" because of his apparent booming kick. Not even close. Undersized midget who wasn't near AFL quality.

Hoping Smith doesn't turn out similar. I really don't want us to beat his attacking flare out of him, that's the biggest thing with him being a decent prospect IMO. Lose that and he's meh.

Dean Cox's cousin too.

Not sure the "standard" isn't any different. That implies less professional.

The "type" of training is different.

20 yrs ago aerobic fitness was everything. All they did was run.

Now it's anaerobic - Lactic, alactic. Now less running and more weights and explosive sprints repeat work

Part of the problem we see today with a lot of players is they lack the aerobic base to run out games (degoey, stringer are classic)

Unfortunately there is too much emphasis on repeat maximal efforts rather than ones' capacity to just run all day. Eg Blicavs easily gets to the next contest BC he is an aerobic beast.

The 2km time trial is a telling test. Some clubs do a 3km trial for a reason.

Should be more 10km runs down west coast Highway against the freo doctor, followed by repeat hill climbs up the sand dunes. Imo

Yeah but then you get someone like Gaff who just waddles around all day at one constant speed. Will no doubt win a time trial sure, but there's no explosiveness, no next gear for him to get separation or drive his legs from a stoppage. He just jogs around and links up.

No one method is better. You need players like Gaff and you need players like Yeo. A happy in between is ideal for the most part IMO

I spoke to someone at the Saints a few weeks back and cheekily asked who they were into, he shot straight out with MacKenzie and didn't offer any other names. Was fairly confident they'd get him too, so if we don't they 99% will.

I am questioning myself why is it that at pick , I am so keen on Mackenzie yet less thrilled with Ginbey.

When I read the Fox player comparisons, it sank in. Now when I read the player comparisons, I take this as to the style of player they are and not trying to predict how good they will be in say 5 years.

Ginbey was likened to Jack Crisp
Mackenzie was likened to Callum Mills

I was comfortable with the comparison - not only did they align with what I had seen, they also explained why I would prefer Mills to Crisp. Both very good players. My priority is for the Mills sort.

2 other comparison :
- Jhye Clark was likened to Joel Selwood. Not for me. I think his leadership is right to compare but not his playing style. Joel is the hardest nut I have seen play in the last 20 years and I would not say that about Clark. A very good balanced mid but not the hard not.

- Ed Allan was likened to Nick Blakely. It was a good comparison to me. A very good player with question marks as to where he will fit and certainly not an balanced mid - more impact off HBF and wing.

You know its a quiet day on Big Footy when old mate " Kent Dark Sharks " is lamenting over our last pick in 2109 - pick 58 that is, whereby Johnson didn't eventuate into anything worthwhile.

Then further edging closer to having a panic attack at the ability of a player ................ that we haven't even drafted.

Just to show the compassionate side of me, I can cut the old kent some slack, as he is most likely under pressure on the home front, as his better half is bearing child, for those of us who have lived through similar, supporting our partners through the journey, we can sympathise with you as its a time when the female emotions and demands can themselves be testing and exhausting.

On a serious note: Mate I hope all is going well for Mrs DS with the pregnancy.

We might need to make a thread to suggest names for junior dark sharks if it's a boy.
I would put forward the suggestion Christopher Brayden ..... alas the names of two of DS's favourite Eagles of past.

And at the other end of the scale I attended my sons yr12 graduation last night. Wife informed me we just paid the last $66 balance of his school fees.

Son is now working in his apprentership and my daughter turning 21 is working FT and studying teaching.

Ahhhhh. What a feeling.

I think the predictions of Humphrey to Gold Coast are wrong. Travelling their recruiting team to Dunsborough to meet the Ginbeys seems a hell of a lot of effort, at a very busy time, just to put up a smokescreen.

And why would they need to put up a smokescreen when they’re so early in the draft?

Maybe they just wanted to attend Leavers?

If we grabbed Mackenzie at 9 I’d be happy to grab Jefferson but then the next 2 picks I would like Mids again.

Main Draft:

Mackenzie
Jefferson
Hewitt
Burgiel
Smith/Gilbey (Try & trade up and grab one of them)

Rookie:

Broadbent
C.McDonald

Cat B:

Dewar
Baker

I don't think Hewett gets that far, but the idea is right. Plenty of other mids around at our pick 20.

Assuming it is Mackenzie at 9, I'm happy with Jefferson at 13. If it were Ginbey at 9 I'd be less comfortable (as he may not end up as a midfielder).

This pisses me off. Eagles recruitment is looking like a joke. Traded pick 2 for F all.

Hope the fat ass Obrien knows this is his job and if he doesn't land quality his done. Fired on the spot.
There will be plenty of talent available at picks 9 and 13 after the Ashcroft bid.

Individuals on this board have indicated their preferences (and so they should) which will determine whether or not the same individuals think we had a good draft night in the short term, in reality you can't determine whether the players are "quality" for at least two seasons.

Its all about the base

We’re on page 608 of this thread so the overall benefits of trading pick 2 for picks 8 and 12 have probably been explained roughly 608 times.

So what is his playing style? To be fair we dont have anyone with leadership qualities in our squad now.
