In reply to Wce17 and WCE_Phil re Kobe Ryan. I found your remarks very surprising and strongly feel that this is a case of mistaken identity. The word around SA circles is that he is a very well rounded, down to earth likeable lad. Has always been highly respected by team mates, opposition players and coaches and his peers. On doing some research and speaking to various groups have found out that right throughout his football career, even juniors, he was always Captain, vice Captain or in the leadership groups and he was also Vice Captain of the State side. All feedback has been very positive, and he also co-coached a local under 15 team football team this year through to winning a grand final. Apparently he is held in high regard at the West Adelaide Football Club . Again, mistaken identity 100%. Agree with your comments that he is a better player than some who were drafted.
but f*ck a goat just one time....

Love the premium we've put on speed in our next-gen midfield. It seems like it's definitely been a focus for us when drafting:

Chesser, Hough, Burgiel, Hewett, Ginbey, Long all have some toe. Should be an exciting crew to watch develop over the years, with Culley the beast feeding it out to them.
Barnett has speed for given his size. He will be a difficult match up away from stoppages.

Speaking of Culley, I was extremely impressed by his 2km time trial result.

Clearly he put in a lot of work over the off season, in fact in his recent video on the Eagles website he stated he was in at the club pretty much every day.

We have a good one here. I love his drive to get everything out of himself.

Extend his contract now!

I know the rookie restrictions are almost irrelevant nowadays. It is worthwhile keeping him on a long term rookie contract with decent $$$ and thereby freeing up a senior list spot. I would be fine early this year extending him as he looks AFL quality already and he has done half the hard yards away from home already. Next 9 months will be testing from my previous times relocating.

The guy is shaping as a best 22 so should be home in Melbourne at least monthly to see family. More than enough.

I was thinking about this the other day. I wonder which other rucks going around can do a 3 sec flat 20m and 6:32 2K. I can't wait to see what he can do with a few years in the system.

To be fair, we set such a low bar this year it’d be hard not to improve

That said I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll be far more competitive next year
Set a low bar and you'll always clear it. Best sex advice I ever received.

We should not get cute with Culleys contract.
If he has anywhere close, to the sort of season that I am expecting him to have, then there will very shortly be, 10 Victorian Clubs into the ear of his manager to try to lure him home.

Let’s get the season underway and then as a matter of “List Management Priority”…. get him signed up on a good contract with some decent tenure to it.

By mid season he should be nicely settled at the Club and well and truely assimilated with the younger players on the list.

Agree ATG that the next 9 months are an important time in his relocation. Having done four for work myself ( both interstate and overseas) over the journey it’s in the early stages of the second year that are critical to homesickness and the diminishing lure of a new locality.

I just think Culley is a breath of fresh air into the playing group with his work ethic and enthusiastic attitude.

He is fast becoming one of my favourite players. 👍

You can't underestimate the athletic improvement that can come for some who have not had access to things like dieticians etc.,

He's probably getting meals at the club that are way healthy than he's ever had, his training will be much more regimented and tailored.

Can't forget he was working at Charcoal Chicken ~6 months ago.

Are you trying to say the charcoal chicken employee meal plan wasn't quite up to scratch? Surely wasn't short of protein...

Agree and I was always keen to get him onto our list, because with his athleticism and amazing marking power, he has good positional versatility.

I thought that even if he was no more that a solid back up ruck then, at the very least he has all the tools to be a dangerous KPP the fact that he in previous times played as a CHB just reinforced this notion for me.
He has an athletic profile, that is going to be fascinating to watch, morph into a quality AFL player.

The ceiling on just how good he could become with that athleticism, if he develops his ruck craft is both enticing and encouraging.

If so then the succession plan for quality rucks, that we have drafted and developed has the bat-ton handed on to the next carrier.

Gardiner to Cox
Cox to NN
NN to Barnett

Bring it on. 👍😃

Ha ha ......... raised him several levels on my likability gauge.

Then the fact that on his return to WAFL, that he snotted an opposition agitator, further enhanced my like for him.

I have NEVER been a fan of teams that consist solely of choir boys, I much prefer a team to have one and preferably two players, that played on the edge with a bit of James Hunt about the way they went about things.

Paging Beau Watters.....you are wanted at reception.

My starting team next year - Probably forgot someone.

Shannon Hurn, Tom Barrass, Tom Cole
Rhett Bazzo, Jeremy McGovern, Elliot Yeo
Brady Hough, Luke Shuey, Jayden Hunt
Jack Petruccelle, Oscar Allen, Elijah Hewett
Liam Ryan, Jack Darling, Jamie Cripps
Nic Naitanui, Tim Kelly, Jai Culley

Liam Duggan, Xavier O'Neill, Callum Jamieson, Jamaine Jones/Campbell Chesser

*Ginbey to start WAFL unless burns up the track pre-season. Then replace LD or XO
*Gaff start WAFL
*I couldn't fit Sheed in the starting side.

*No favourites. Reward WAFL form, even 1st year players. Drop ANY player that deserves it.
I agree Gaff needs to be in the magoos, just does not fit on the coalface and does not gut run anymore. Needs to win his spot along with Sheed.

Gaff was carrying a foot injury in the back half of last year and is noticeably slimmer returning this off-season. Whilst I agree with you about him not being suited to the coalface I do expect him straight back into the team whilst also hoping that he can reinvent himself somewhat on the wing for a faster paced gameplan.

Surprised he hasn't already been extended. We've had a history of extending our draftees contracts really early, especially if they've shown good signs.

Is it a rookie list issue, where we can't extend his contract without elevating him to the senior list? Otherwise the longer he is on his rookie contract, the more I worry he's a flight risk. And I'm not certain we can even trade rookie listed players?

If he’s on decent money, then the contract is effectively split between the soft cap and salary cap. $95k (or what ever the current rookie salary is) will count under the soft cap, the reminder falls under the salary cap.
