We should be focussed on taking our quality picks to the draft while we have them. Trade for players as we rise up the ladder and our draft capital decreases.

In the interview on AFL.com Simpson said the intention was to go to the draft again this year

I’d like us to use a future pick(s) to get an additional 1st round pick this year too if at all possible- might be difficult as clubs will be unlikely to trade out of this years draft I suspect

Someone like GC might be willing to sell their currency for a dabble next year instead, depending on what academy talent they have coming through in 2024.

But I tend to agree. Load up again this year and that will be 3 years we've gone to the draft. Someone like a Logan McDonald doesn't really change much for us in 2024. Happy to kick that can down the road a little further and then if we have pick 10 instead of pick 3-5 oh well sorry that's the best we can offer.

Noone bit to my question earlier in the thread but wondering if we're warming to Tim English as a free hit given our current ruck situation. He may not be the complete package but if he's free and we have cap space, I think he could round out his game under the tutelage of NN. He would be in his prime as our new midfield starts to hit their straps.

I’m not a huge Tim English fan but I can see (and would support) the club having a genuine crack at him if he’s still a FA at the end of next year

He might just be the best available when you weigh up player trades/draft picks to acquire the services of others. Seems quite durable, will turn 27 late into next season. Should have a good 5 years of footy in front of him.

I'm not sure Baz or Jamo will be anywhere near his level after two more seasons of AFL. English has his shortcomings but his other traits are valuable. If Nic can teach him how to ruck that's a good combination with his existing skillset.

Being left out of the last big dance is not a good way to retain players.

Mind you I hope Logan toughs it out and uses that he wasn't good enough as inspiration. From all count she is doing just that. I want him when he is a free agent. Not needing to give up multiple picks for him now. Given he is in contract until end of 2024 and it will only be 4 years service, we will have a long time to wait for FA. If he starts to fire now, surely the Swans will be in a position to cough up decent coin to extend. If he is not firing by then, do we want him?

The Swans have locked away Mills and Heaney on LT deals. The McCartin brothers will be looking for promotions as will Florent, Rowbottom, Blakey, Guilden and Warner. I suspect they have had to suppress salaries with Buddy's deal and I cannot think that Jacinta allowed Buddy to be taking much of a salalry reduction for 2023.

I would rather we pick up Curtin this November to join Oscar and I am hoping Jack Williams will start to come good. It would have been horrid for him in the Beagles last year as a lone target in the forward line and in a team that struggled to get I50's.
Sydney have run with a shortened senior list and maximum rookie list for the entirety of Buddy’s contract.

Basically means they’ve allocated 3 senior list spots to Buddy’s contract.

And also means their recruiters have always done a power of work identifying rookies.

They had 2 kids make the U16AA team last year, including the number one KPF of the tournament.

They also had 2 kids make the U15AA team last year, both are rated the number 1 and number 2 prospect in QLD in their age group.

Their academy is genuinely pumping out a lot of top end kids, and is now the number 1 northern academy for talent.

And that doesn’t even include the Darwin kids they have free access to.

I'd rather Curtin but we may perform too well to get him.

Ideal situation to get Logan this year would be he hasn't played enough this year, killing it in the seconds and is frustrated. As he's barely played, his currency is lowered and we can get him relatively cheap - pick 7 or GC first rather than multiple firsts which isn't worth it.

Not saying I'm chips in, but one to keep an eye on this season.

I thought that may be the case, I just couldn't think of a better candidate that might have a tasty first round pick they're looking to sell this year in exchange for one the following.

All that said, GC might surprise a few this year. Their first rounder may not be as juicy as they're used to.

Last thing we should be doing is trading high end pick in the next few drafts.

Focus should be completely on the draft and filling gaps with free agency.

We should be able to go to the draft with around 4 top 30 pick’s if we trade well and Port flop, similar to last year. With what we have done over the last few years in the draft and another strong draft we will start to see the benefits of this in a few years time.

Just need patience at the moment.

Can change that over time as we assemble a competitive list and fill holes then using picks during trade week.

We go to this year's draft with a strong hand and that's three consecutive years of stocking up on youth, more than 10 kids, a quarter of our list, in three years. After that point, I'm more than happy for the club to start considering other ways to balance the list.

If Gill is planning to announce the formation of the Tassie team before he departs, how long do we think it would be before they would form a team/get priority picks in the draft?

Still got to build a stadium etc so maybe like 2025/6?

Just hoping we don't cop missing out on a pick 1, 2 or 3 if we finish low because this new team has started up. If we can scrape through the next couple of years getting our good picks/players before climbing the ladder again just as the team comes in then that would be good.

I guess it's still all relative though as regardless of what pick we have everyone will be pushed back a pick if there are priority picks. Just would suck to have pick 1 and an option of someone like a Reid (based on current standing), Daicos or Ashcroft be taken away from us just because of coincidence of when we finished last and when the new tassie team came in.

My current take on the 2024 draft is the legitimately a quarter of it could potentially be father son and northern academy picks.

Potentially quite a few teams might be wanting to “sell” 2024 picks.

That would be the draft I would be looking to trade a future (2025) first round pick in to.

Plus if Tassie is coming in in 2026, they’ll be getting priority picks in the 2025 draft.

Will need to be around 15-18 in our case due to a poor age group in the mid twenties. Some of these kids won’t make it at Afl standard.

From the age of 23-27 the majority of players are at there peak.

If you broke our list down into age brackets 18-22, 23-27 and 28+. How much talent have we in that middle bracket? Most of these players are probably nearing there peak or will only improve slightly from what we have seen.

High end picks yes, we keep them and use them. Happy to split picks for the right deal, like last year.

Picks in the late 30's and 40 + happy to use them on younger high end talent who have had hicups or lack of opportunities, but no major injuries. EG: Robertson, Garcia, Sheldrick, B Miller, Brockman, Granger-Barrass (underwhelming to date), love Darcy Jones GWS, J Tunstill Lions, Carrol at the Blues.

Can see a pick around there being used or come in during the ruck merry go round at some stage.

Some of those are more 'hand me down' types than high end imo.

What's the go there? Tired to avoid Hawks games, my one game a week of watching crap football was dedicated to the Eagles. Is it simply a case of him being played on key forwards when he's not physically ready?
