Contract status of all players now fully updated

Surprised NN contract is for 2 years. Thought at his age and injury history a 1 year extension at a time would be more appropriate.
Unless he threatened to explore other options, which I would find unlikely.

Think of it like the contract for Sam Mitchell. Second year is likely optional for playing - he goes into a coaching role if he doesn't play. We will have cap space to burn in 2024 as we have very few players demanding large contracts for being elite in their position.

It all depends on what the $$$ were right?

My take is it's not a contract to keep him around as a player, its more to have him as a playing/coach role (moving more into the coaching role by 2nd year). And the costs come out of the cap that way.

It's not like we're pressed for list spots.

How could Freo be better placed without hardly enough draft capital? Unless with the max exodus happening there they end up with a few 2nd and 3rd rounders

Potentially get capital with all their players leaving. Acres leaving is a big hole on their wing. Sharp would be a handy replacement for them. Although I would like us to go in for Sharp. Think he has decent upside

Why do we as supporters care what money NN, or anyone else, is on?

Let him be on $2m pa for all I care. As long as it fits within the cap and doesn't result in players having to be traded to salary dump. People complaining that Gaff's contract is too big, Fatty McGov is overpaid, TK not earning his pay. Which player have we lost or been unable to trade for as a result of our salary cap management? None? Then who gives a * how much anyone is paid?

Couldn't disagree more. Its an entertainment industry and like it or not, the list management/player movement aspect is a huge part of the product. People love it, and players salaries are a massive part of it.

Actually reckon it should all be public. Why should a min wage guy cop the same pressure and expectation to perform as well as someone on a million a year does?

Peter Bell is an excellent operator, his arrival in a management role has been a big part of their revival.
A change in management personnel, head coach and structure.
I doubt new players from draft picks and trades is going to turn things around for us, very happy to be wrong though.

For some reason, "King Nissie the 1st" is reluctant to surround the football operations with people of strength. Not since The Reverend have we had a really strong Head of Football.

Vozzo was good but he had been promoted through the Nissie 1st reign and hence was comfortable with Nissie 1st micro management since he had been promoted by his boss before..

Hence Nissie 1st is comfortable with The Pieman stepping up to do both roles. They are meant to be separate roles for a reason – checks and balances.

Hence Nissie 1st is comfortable having Gavin Bell step up as football manager and Ben Sharman as football operations manager. Blur the lines. Allow Nissie 1st to micromanage. Neither of these 2 have much of a profile having been groomed internally by Nissie 1st.

Folks - are you seeing the pattern. Like another institution in the northern hemisphere, the head of the family monarchy is likely to hold on for too long and pretend a son who has been promoted without performance takes over.

I think the timing of these announcements are a little odd

I mean, we are meant to be in contention to sign the best young ruckman going around in Jackson, and yet we spruik about re-signing our 2 ruckmen in the Big Boofhead Bailey Williams and a perennially injured Nic Nat to new deals?

Fremantle are about to remove Lobb, and most likely, Meek from their list, which to me makes them a more viable option for a second ruckman. Especially since Jackson is already used to working in tandem with Gawn (which he will do with Darcy)

It just feels like very poor timing to me

I am happy we re signed Williams.

Even if we had Dean Cox and Max Gawn right now we'd be tapping it to no one so midfield needs to be properly rebuilt

What he brings to the table though with his profile and putting bums on seats, advertising and ambassador roles is invaluable.
Lets not forget that he will be working with the younger ruckmen and midfield with his years of experience.

I can see Freo wanting him as a replacement for Acres

I have been keen on Sharp for some time. Reported both WA teams were keen.

My fantasy is a swap for Gaff even if we throw in $$ for two years. We get a winger who is the right age bracket and has some pace. Suns get a gut running wing with experience who sets training standards with finals experience.

Or even Rotham. Suns also chasing a HBF.

Looks like Ben Long is heading there so list spots will need to be opened up.

Because supporters care about their club and how it's managed/operated? Otherwise why are you even a supporter?

Overpaying for players is not good management. And it does not build to a premiership.

Salary caps need to be spent. Only a certain amount can be carried forward. If you start overpaying players above their market rate then you end up with a list of mediocrity (ie where we're at now).
Or worse still, you end up like North with a VFL grade side.. yet still spending all your salary cap on them. It's very difficult to unravel.

How would you know what we've missed out on as a result of our salary cap management? Our playing list is in a complete shambles and thats as a result of overpaying too few and having no good depth.

We've got a reset now, and admittedly it matters a little less about who's getting paid what at the minute in this transition period, as there's likely not enough top end talent on the list to demand big dollars. But we need the right money coming free at the right time to get the quality in, and we need to be able to afford to pay the quality youth that emerges in the next few years as they break out.

Because Dockers got pick 19 and a midfielder last year because they had cap space and we weren't an option just for one thing . So opportunity when it arrives is closed if you have wasted capitol on overpaid players.

Sharp was the same cohort as my daughter and in somewhat crossover friendship groups - he will fit very nicely into the FIGJAM Fyfe leadership model!!

Sign him up for the Purples. They might just send Henry as a straight trade.

Spending three years mostly playing in the 2nds will likely have tempered that FIGJAM attitude I'd suggest.
