Missing one or even both of those boys will not mean the trade has backfired by any stretch

If we truly want Ginbey, we’ll take him with pick 8 unless he gets taken before then. Should that occur at least three of Humphrey, Clark, Hollands, Phillipou or MacKenzie will be at our pick. All good options and some would argue better than Ginbey

If Hewett is gone by pick 12 then Busslinger, Hotton or one or two of that group mentioned before would still be available.

Assuming Ashcroft goes at 1, there’s at least 9 players that will be taken in the 6-15 range of the draft that I suspect we’d be happy to take. Only 3 will be gone by the time we take our first pick and at least 3 will still be there when our 2nd comes around

No need to pin all our hopes on getting both Ginbey and Hewett
No Keys, if even a single WA player goes before our pick then we forfeit the right to use it and are forced to reemploy Brayden Ainsworth.

I kind of want to be saved from ourselves if our plan is Ginbey at 8… I’d much prefer Phillipou or Humphries

But agree with your comment, we will be fine, our picks are in a nice spot and there are likely to be 3-4 good options at each of them

Pieman just confirms that there is always a preference to WA players on 6PR
You've paraphrased here. He said if the best talent is not West Australian, they won't hesitate to take him (non West-Australian). He said they like to take West Australians and will do so if its a close call in talent between a WA player and non-WA. He pointed out recent history of regularly drafting non-WA players. He basically kyboshed all the traded down to grab WA players reports
He also mentioned they rate 2 through to 8 as relatively even. Ha Ha but what about 9 ROB?

So now we have finished with rioli scenario and associated pick swaps, do we see us doing anything tomorrow? Would we still try and look at someone like Deven Robertson? Could throw a later pick at Brisbane and see if they will bite just because there Dunkley scenario is getting aittle desperate and might want another pick even if it's an average one.

ROB said its very unlikely we take any further part

I have to ask the question - where is this perceived idea that we're scared of drafting interstate kids and only draft local kids coming from?

I've done an analysis of all of our draft picks in the Adam Simpson era - see below.

32 draft selections in total, 15 from WA which represents 46.9% of all draftees coming from WA. Hardly confirms that we are fearful of drafting interstate kids like I'm reading so much of.

A few interesting things:

- The last 3 years it's been 80% drafted from WA, but you must also consider that we've only had 3 picks in the top 40 in that time

- Speaking of when the picks have occurred, it is worth noting what the splits look like when we focus on picks in the top 40, versus later round picks (when it makes a lot more sense to take fliers on local talent that other clubs may not have spent as much time and resource scouting)

- Of the 32 picks, 18 have occurred in the top 40, whilst 14 have occurred after this

- Of the top 40 picks, 8 of 18 are from WA (44.4%), and if we just look at top 30 (where all our selections will likely be this upcoming draft), only 2 of our 8 selections (25%) are from WA (Oscar Allen and Liam Ryan), which suggests the higher our picks, the less likely we are to draft WA kids

- Longer range speculative picks from 41 and above, it's 50% from WA and 50% from interstate (but a lot more WA focused in the last few years

- The biggest takeaway is that of our 8 selections since 2014 that have occurred in the top 30 of the draft, just 2 have been from WA, compared to 6 from interstate. Something to consider when we try to project who we're going to take with 8, 12, 20 and 26 in about 6 weeks time.

During the Foley/Ainsworth years we started to look inwards. Taking the WA over better talents

Doing that favourite BigFooty thing of reading between the lines but interesting to note that Connor West, Zane Trew and Isiah Winder are the only Eagles players that have liked that Insta post…all departing the club?

Actually Luke Edwards, Hough & Chesser also liked the post. So did Luke Jackson lol.
So did Elliot Yeo, Tim Kelly, Liam Ryan, Nic Naitanui and Charlie Thomas...all departing the club?

At the time of me posting Yeo, TK, Ryan & NN hadn't liked it yet...

He wouldn’t be including Ashcroft. So Ashcroft + 8 = 9.

So with GWS getting pick 1 I can see them not bidding on Ashcroft at pick 1 .

The Northern states don't screw each other over with bidding , GWS and brissy are pretty chummy too .

Recon Brisbane will have done a Collingwood and daicos

I don't think it's a given will take the WA boys with our first 2 picks. It wasn't until draft day that it was made known we would take Chesser.

Because he’s old and perennially injured

So much top-tier WA talent that we just didn't even get a crack at through that period. Obviously, we couldn't have landed all of them, but getting our hands on 1 or 2 of Swallow, Cogs, Jaegar, Hogan, Martin or even Bennell would have been bloody handy.

That's the nature of the draft I guess, but it's probably more frustrating that all went to crap clubs that messed up their development and it was only Coniglio that really got close to fulfilling his talent... and even then it was only for a few years.

At least three from that group should have retired with AA honours to their names.

If Gold Coast didn't have such a bad injury run through their existence you could say JOM was bad luck, but given how many players have had their careers derailed by injuries at GCS I don't think it was just bad luck.

Nah is what it is. I'd have liked Cadman personally, but as others have mentioned I daresay there's a lot riding on Rohan nailing that pick 2 selection, given It never happens.

Now we're at least having 2 bites of the Cherry. I think it goes down easier if we convince ourselves, true or not, that some of the Vic kids at the top end didn't give us confidence in their interview.

We've had a long preference for WA players at later picks when talent becomes harder to isolate and development takes longer.

Now that we've secured ourselves 4 picks inside the top 30 this year, is there some chance we package up a few of our new 2023 picks to someone like GC Suns who need points, and try to take a few real quality selections over quantity selections next year?

What would it look like?

And who might be on the way out in 2023 that has currency to play elsewhere?

Go.

Yes, I agree with your position. Frustrating to see so many top local players go to non WA teams, specifically not to us.

I like Ginbey and think he suits the needs of our team but the report he is in Gold Coast’s sights is annoying. If that happens there should still be good, even top quality midfield talent such as Clark, MacKenzie, Tsatas ( if Ginbey goes in the top 7), Phillipou, Hewett. Sounds like Humphrey has serious downsides.

Hewett would be a good pick at #12 but if we don’t pick him at #8 he may not be there at #12 and we miss out on the top WA talent altogether unless it’s Busslinger. I like Buss as a player but a KPD is even less of a need than KPF. I think Hotton and Hollands may be good players but they are getting down to a lower level. Interesting to see how it works out.

I think it was a good move to split the pick given concerns around the top five, and that GWS were going to take Cadman who is the clear best player without major concerns for us. Getting #8 and #12 is not as easy as picking up Ginbey and Hewett as first appeared although we are still in a good position to pick up two good to very good players, one of whom may ironically be Phillipou.

would we not use Ports future 2nd on Jeremy Sharp?, We drafted Ainsworth with pick 32 recently just to point out ROB's midfield drafting ability
