So now we have finished with rioli scenario and associated pick swaps, do we see us doing anything tomorrow? Would we still try and look at someone like Deven Robertson? Could throw a later pick at Brisbane and see if they will bite just because there Dunkley scenario is getting aittle desperate and might want another pick even if it's an average one.

Watching Trading Day on Fox before…. Did Dermott pretty much say the Hawks are tanking for next years draft?

Was a strange pitch he put forward to defend Mitchell and there trade moves
Funny I literally just had that thought, as I saw Mitchell and O'Meara as chances to be traded for peanuts on the last day. There would go their midfield.

Tanking has begun for Harley.

Now that I have caught up on all 44 pages since the trade dropped and must say the melts were highly entertaining although a little unjustified.

Trading down from 2 to 8 & 12 isn't disastrous, its actually pretty good considering the names that will actually be available to us. Where I think this board got sidetracked or starstruck even is that we were hoping for 5 & 7 from GC even though that was never available. Yes North got 3 & 12 for Pick 1 but for GWS, it was really black and white. Pick 1 for Cadman or no deal.

Like many on here, the only name that I was really hoping to get was Cadman as he sounds like he will pair nicely with Oscar. My excitement for the others temped as with everyones educated concerns (hammies, flight risk, iffy disposal, etc).

What's bloody exciting and if you want to start smelling the roses again is that it sounds like we will get two gun mids around the top 10. Ask yourself when we were getting d1cked by nearly a 100 each week in June that we would end up with 2 top 10 mids, you would have taken it. Add to basically new recruits in Culley and Chessar and although I still don't expect to win many games still, the midfield is starting to turn over or at the very least, we have 'green shoots' to look forward to.

The other thing we all are missing is that next year in a supposedly deeper draft, we have a significant hand. Definitely not GC significant but enough of a head start that we can actually leverage off. Can't say for everyone but knowing we had two second rounders this year was at least something to look forward to in a bleak year.

It's easy to blame ROB for everything that goes wrong or not getting the perfect scenario but from analysing his work in a lot greater detail, he has actually done a sensational job. I know everyone isn't going to agree but quick list includes:
  • Bazzo & Hough for peanuts picks
  • Culley looks like our defensive mid that every good midfield needs (you can't have just Ferraris, you also need a hi-lux for the heavy work)
  • Scammed a free second rounder from Port
  • Chessar - can't speak for his on-field performance but big win here is he looks like the anti-flight risk
  • 4 picks inside top 26 in a supposedly even draft
Anyways, carry on.

Not going to lie this thought crossed my mind. Maybe not that they planned it before the end of the season. But once Gunston also opted to leave, maybe they have figured screw it not point finishing 12th again, may as well go the full hog and get in some extra draft capital because we might be heading down there anyway

I would look to upgrade 26 and Port F3 for 19

Then draft night hope there is a slider and sell 20 for sliding back in the 20s and a future 2nd

Go into next year with 1xR1, 3xR2 and 1xR1

That's 5 in top 40 a strong draft

And taking 8,12, 19 and 24-28 this year

I like it.

A 4th pick in the late 2nd would have us around another interesting part of the draft.

Pick 27. Another slider? Barnett, Keeler, Hustwaite, George would be tempting. Szybcowski. Both Jones.

Getting 8 and 12 for 2 is very good for this draft imo. Very little between players from the 1st live pick to 15ish.

Dermie on Trading Day

Asked on 2023

“ yeah they won 8 games this year, I think 6 would be a good result for them.”

“ this is a complete reset to win a premiership, this is not about being competitive for the now, you want to do that anyway, this is about the October or November draft 2023.”

“ this is one where Sam has said this is how you put together a premiership list”

He bangs on from there as Dermie does

Can someone link me to some footage of Ginbey?

Doesn’t this sort of thing throw the integrity of the trade period in the air?

If they aren’t being processed till the afternoon then there’s a chance that something that was agreed upon early in the day is second guessed by one of the clubs involved, with more time to think it over, and they pull out, when the trade would have been signed and sealed had they done it hours before.
The AFL has absolutely zero integrity but since us suckers continue to watch and they really have no one to answer too, they get away with it.

If we speak just purely about drafting and trading:
  1. Ticking off on salary dumps. This goes against their principal of having to sign off on ALL trades made so one club doesn't collude with or d1ck the other.
  2. How the defending premiers get a free Pick 7 for essentially a worthless future 3rd round pick is laughable. Would Geelong do this deal if it was say Pick 12 and Bowes? PICK FRIGGEN 7!!!!!
  3. FA compo. Every year there is a team that exploits the system yet the AFL does nothing about it. Case this year is Brisbane with Gunston. Like is there any more justification for you to just get rid of compo picks entirely when you get the advantage of $500k in cap space by not signing McStay, get rewarded by not signing him with compo pick and to cap it off, get a FREE AGENT yourself for a junk pick or free by signing Gunston.
  4. What's the salary cap next year? Would it not be good by knowing this before Free Agency/trading/drafting etc?
  5. Draft bidding.... Back to Brisbane who are sourcing as many Toyota Camrys possible so they can trade it all up for one shiny, rolled-gold Ferrari in Ashcroft. Like the draft is compromised enough without having a joke like this.
  6. Priority Picks... ok North for being rubbish and playing the woe is me card, here's a couple of extra picks for you to dilute next years draft even more with. Just make sure you get some alright players with them as you can't use them yourself but the rest of the comp will need to be pushed back one or two picks.

Anyways the AFL suck and as long as everyone looks at ways to exploits the rules, play on!

At pick 8 I'd take:
1. Cameron Mackenzie - the best field kick in the draft and a smooth mover from contests. I think he projects as better than Tsatas and Clark (even though both are tipped to go before him). Also would regularly outperform Ashcroft in the same team but keep that on the DL. Certainly in the mould of a Callum Mills type player (better disposal than Mills, but not as good as Mills in other areas).
2. Bailey Humphrey - probably isn't available here, but if he was, strikes me as a Dangerfield type midfielder. Super explosive and great upper body strength.
3. Mattaes Phillipou - probably the greatest scope of any player in the draft. He has a great inside-outside game and at 192cm would pair well with Culley for our future extra-sized midfield. I get a more midfield oriented Darcy Fogarty or a more prolific Justin McInerney vibes from Phillipou.

At pick 12 I'd take:
1. Mattaes Phillipou - may still be available here, depending on earlier selections. If we got him and Mackenzie/Humphrey at our picks that would be tremendous for our midfield rebuild.
2. Oliver Hollands - regularly lauded for his two way running I think Hollands would complement a midfield with Culley really well.
3. Elijah Hewett - yeah I actually like Hewett and wouldn't mind him (or Ginbey here), but not if we're justing going a one-two punch for WA kids with our picks (particularly if one of our picks in the 20s is used for Jones). People on this forum say he reminds them of Tim Kelly, and I can see that. I also get Dion Prestia vibes from him.

At pick 20 I'd probably take a slider (if any players aren't selected who were expected to go into the teens).
If not, Hotton and Hustwaite may be available around this selection. Hustwaite at 194cm combined with Culley and other recruits could give us a very tall midfield.

At pick 26 I'd take Jones or Clarke.

If my options for picks 8 and 12 eventuates I would actually feel like our pick downgrade was justified and was really helping with our rebuild.
The fact you mention Culley in almost every player comparison is really grim... we literally have nothing coming through at the moment haha.

No pressure chesser and culley...

Phillipou, Hewett and Jones and I’m happy.

Along with last years group Chesser, Hough, Bazzo and Culley.

Nice start to a rebuild and hopefully developed correctly.
Can't see us getting both Hewitt and the 💩.
Having said that, there's always a slider, wonder who this time round?

Pieman just confirms that there is always a preference to WA players on 6PR
He said in a perfect world they’d be able to draft all WA players but qualified that by saying if there was a player from outside WA that was better they would always take the better player

So best player wherever they’re from

Hawthorn are doing almost the opposite to us, moving on most/all of their older players and watching the kids sink or swim

Be interested to see where each club is at 3-4 years from now
That's what happens when you show your cards

Gold Coast have pick 5. Their next pick isn’t until 45. I very much doubt they’ll base their one high end selection around who we, or anyone else, might be picking

Also, the only people connecting us to Ginbey are the media and that’s because he’s the most highly rated WA player in their eyes. It’s quite possible WCE are more than happy for the media to run with the homegrown angle as it diverts attention from any non WA draftees we might be considering

There’s no clubs in our draft range with multiple picks so they’re not going to give a shit who we’re looking at, they’ll be too busy working out who best fits their needs
