I think there is definitely an ideal 2025 offseason which puts us in the hot seat for finals come 2026. Here’s the copium version.

Oscar Allen wants 7 years and we’re not budging with 5. Both Brisbane and Sydney are offering him 7. He decides he has to do what’s best for his future and moves to Sydney. We take home band 1 compensation for Oscar Allen. We finish second last with 7 wins and roughly 80%. Freo finish top 4 and go out in straight sets. Sydney lose in a prelim. Chad Warner decides to come home. He chooses west coast. And Freo doesn’t have the currency to get a good deal. We send our band 1 pick (3) our future 1st and second for The Warner Bros, Sydney’s 2025 FRP and their 2026 2ndRP. We sign Brandon Starcevich in FA (or trade a second for him as I’m not sure what will happen because of Oscar). Cripps and Sheed retire, we delist chess, Rawlinson and Petch. We take picks 2, Syd FRP and Haw FRP to the draft and try to trade our remaining picks into the next draft.

Is it likely, no. Is it possible, maybe?

Starcevich would cost similar to Baker in a trade, likely the Sydney 1st round pick youve got us getting as a minimum (unless Brisbane dont want more assets this year as they have their academy kid in the top 10ish).

Unless the AFL tones down the compo significantly, Starcevich is comfortably a band 1 compo player. Hes at least as good as Battle and hes better than Perryman who both got band 1 this year, thats what Brisbane would be giving up by losing him to a trade rather than FA. Hes actually a restricted free agent.

I dont think Allen out is in any "best case scenario", we are still better off using the hawks 1st+ a future pick or something for Warner x2 and getting nothing back than losing Allen for pick 3 tbh. Hes still an A-grader and we have no guarantees Shanahan or Archer will be good at AFL level yet.
If we did the trade of hawks 1st + 2026 1st pick for Warner, and kept Allen, we can sign Starcevich as a FA and still keep out first pick for a mid anyway. Wont have a pick in the first round for a KPD, but it is what it is

I agree, I think its extremely unlikely.
He either sticks around for 2026 or is traded, I think he gets offered a 1 year deal

I think hes just been played out of position so far, a new coaching staff finding the right role for him should help him. Worst case hes depth at a good age, with 2026 being his 5th season on a list.

All you have is an opinion, like most of us.

What he was drafted at is pretty much irrelevant IMO.
DGB was drafted at pick 6.

Not interested in other lists either.
Means nothing in the scheme of things.

If some of these new draftee's go past him, I reckon he will be in trouble.

Not that I necessarily think he'll be de-listed (although not completely ruling it out) but we did recently de-list a pick 13 after his 4th season

If we assume we are trading for Warner x2 and we are getting starcevich in some way eiter trade or FA, then keeping Oscar is by far the better option.
If we let Oscar go for pick 3:
trade 3+f1 pick for Warner x2+swans 1st
trade hawks 1st rounder for Starcevich
End with pick 2+swans 1st+ our 2nd rounder etc

If we keep Oscar:
Trade hawks 1st+f1 for Warner x2
Starcevich free as a FA
Still have pick 2+our 2nd rounder etc

The difference between the 2 outcomes is the swans 1st vs keeping Allen.

Best case is keeping Oscar 100%. If we dont wish to acquire any free agents then sure letting Allen go for a high pick becomes viable again

Yes. They judge compo as a totality of ins and outs via free agency

Reid, Hewett, Allan, Gross, Hall and hopefully Ginbey. That is a strong, brutal midfield. If the Hawks miss the 8 or Oscar leaves via FA then we can feasibly add both Warner and Rodriguez this draft to round it out. Cody Curtin will probably make it to our 2R as well, especially now that Freo have taken a KPD in each of the last two drafts. If we can get a good tap ruckman or Flynn stays fit then the square is going to be our strength rather than our weakness. Add the NGAs/FS and we’re looking good.

As much as everyone likes to point the finger at initiatives that address gender/ racial/ etc inequalities in businesses and scream "DEI PICK!!!", its pretty telling that a lot of companies that dont conform to these initiatives usually end up being run by old, white men for decades.

But this is the draft thread so I wont digress further.

Ocean gate had initiatives in place to specifically avoid hiring 'old white men'.

I think diversity of thought is more important diversity of appearance however I will agree that sometimes organisations need a a kick up the backside to look outside the box a bit.

On the draft front, WCE have probably needed this for a long time. Organisation was very stale under Nisbett.

If Allen did walk, I wouldn't be against going after DanCurtin instead of starcevich at the risk of ruling out our compo

Youve got us overpaying by a long way for Warner there imo, thats Judd value areas, Warner isnt close to that.
If it was the band 1 compo + our 2026 1st pick for Warner + the swans 2025 1st pick maybe, with the swans potentially adding more there to even it out depending on finishing spots.

If Sydney fizzle out during the finals and Warner does a baker and wants syd fairly compensated I think it'll get a bit ugly and cost a fair bit. I agree it's too much, hopefully as a minimum a r2/f2 was coming back.

Given Ginbey's poor kicking he is never going to be anything close to an offensive weapon for us coming our of the backline. He really does need to learn how to completely lock down an opponent so he at least offers something defensively to be worth his salt in the team.

He is not a total spud but he is spud adjacent. Likely to not ever even be at Jayden Hunt quality which is really disappointing since we got Hunt for free and Ginbey was a top 10 pick.
