I think their order of best available was just quite different to others.

There is still some good talent on the board, but outside of Freo's pick I'm not sure there will be too many opportunities to trade up until the tigers picks. Hawks wanted to take 'x' number of early picks so I assume they will hold theirs, Geelong traded up to get a second crack in this range.

Carlton maybe. Freo I think will trade 21. North may be our best chance (we obviously have strong relationships with their staff), not sure if they would be keen though.

Hobbs. Sinn and Johnson we all ranked higher than Chesser across all the other experts.

Chesser wasn't best available at 12 and we traded down.

Yeah I wrote drafted Instead of traded my bad.

I'm pointing out that we still have quite a few that were drafted that start in the centre.
From a long time ago. Nobody drafted within the past 8 years is a starter in our midfield and our mids fall off dramatically when our regular starters aren't there. In fact, the inability to draft a decent mid since Sheed meant we had to trade the farm for Kelly because ROB just couldn't help himself and took Brander. He also took Ainsworth in the same draft when we could've had Worpel, who won the Hawks B&F either that year or the next.

Now we had 2 quality mids with the skills we are desperate for gift wrapped for us and we took the guy who's 2 main deficiencies are exactly what our team is weak at.

Unbelievable.

What relevance do those opinions hold? Especially after so many disruptions.

None of these kids have played a game yet.

Fremantle have spent the last 8 years drafting midfielders and look where that’s got them…
Ha, good point! But with a couple more on board maybe they're hitting a midfield critical mass and will explode anytime soon?

The fact we were all laughing about O’Brien taking another half back flanker in jest months ago to find come draft night that’s exactly what he has done makes my stomach churn.
He has an incredibly poor track record with drafting midfielders, all I wanted to see was us take a pure midfielder with our first pick instead of speculating.

The only two Mids that have made it that we drafted in the last ten years are Andrew Gaff and Dom Sheed.

That’s right...TWO IN TEN YEARS.

With Shuey, Redden over 30 and gone within two years and our reserves currently looking like Samo, Edwards, Trew, West and O’Neill we couldn’t have been in more dire need of a pure midfielder and yet we take a half back flanker who might be able to play wing with little to no exposure to football for two years over pure midfield options.

I just don’t understand how the club as a whole ticked off on this.

Perhaps we should all just wait until the draft is over before attempting to understand.

MJ was still there at 14. In fact he's still there at 21.

And no way Chesser was making it to 31.

The only 'miss' from the trade was Hobbs (and Sinn, but that seemed pretty clearly telegraphed by Port).

Chesser was clearly our target, so getting an extra F2 pick was very good business.

Port make a Prelim next year or even worse, win one, what does that second rounder become?

Much the same as our trades with Sydney and Port last year. They both finished in the top 8 which proved detrimental to where both those future picks ended up this year.

Echoing others' thoughts about our completely baffling refusal to draft quality mids.

Had a little look through our recent drafting history of mids... (left out randos like Dylan Main and Hamish Brayshaw)

2010 R1 4 Gaff
2012 R3 60 Hutchings
2013 R1 11 Sheed
2015 R2 28 Partington
2017 R2 32 Ainsworth
2018 R2 28 X. O'Neill
2020 R4 52 L. Edwards
2021 ?

JFC. It makes no sense at all.

I’m as gutted as everyone else with tonight.

but I will say 2 things…

1. It’s not the kids fault we drafted him… he seemed legit excited to be drafted by this club… so welcome aboard champ 👍

2. Whilst it doesn’t always pan out, there are plenty of players that get picked around this selection that make names for themselves 🤷‍♂️

Yes I would have creamed myself getting Erasmus or Johnson (who is still available). But let’s be happy with what we have and see what unfolds from here.

I’ll reserve my melt for 24 hours 😂

So from reading the last few pages, as I understand it, our issues are

  1. we never take best available, and only ever draft to fill a need
  2. we never draft to fill our needs, and only ever take best available

If Chesser was best available, i'll eat my hat :tophat:

And the club blatantly targeted him. So either this U16 form Rohan is so in love with was pretty special, or he's just trying too hard to be clever at a time where the state of our list meant we really couldn't afford to be taking a risk on a speculative player like this.

Based on recent history I expect the following…

First pick - not what we needed *mad face*
Second pick - who?
Third pick - steal of the draft *hype*
Fourth pick - punt which somehow becomes everyone’s favourite pick by mid-2022

Rookie draft - bloke who cuts oranges in the E grade ammos
One down. Four to go campaigners.

Not actually dissapointed with Chesser, seems like a good kid with plenty of good attributes. He isn't the contested mid this board wanted but I can see him improving our best 22.

Despite our poor perfromances of late, we don't actually lack contested mids
Current Eagles players that would be well ahead of Matt Johnson if we had drafted him as a mid: Yeo, Shuey, Kelly, Redden as contested mids and also behind Sheed, LEdwards, SPS, Trew? as more outside mid options.
Current Eagles players that are ahead of CC as a rebounding HB (if thats where we play him): Witherden? Foley? - can see Chesser debuting in our back line or on a wing a lot sooner than Johnson would in our midfield.

Plus his coaches and teammates etc speak highly of his work ethic etc.

As I'm sure BOND 007 will confirm: CC ... you cant say no...

Nasiah Wanaganeen Milera's dad was a saints player from 2012-14. FYI Terry Milera is 33 for those playing at home

except Boots was an inside mid even then
If only we'd gone with the needed inside mid in Daniel Rich with our first pick that draft, instead of picking the risky best available in NicNat
