I would love you to draft Tsatis.

The melts on here when you realise you’ve drafted a winger, who’s 5 or 6 years away from potentially being able to play on ball.
I really feel sorry for any young guy that we pick up with out first pick. If he isn't up to being in our best 22 from the first game in '23 and leading all fairest and best awards by round 5 he will be absolutely slaughtered on this site.

Petracca was dominant as an U18 and was viewed as the best, can’t miss prospect since the Hodge/Judd draft.

It’s just that the Saints needed a key forward so bad, that he went pick 2.

The fact that it took him a while to reach his ceiling is more down to his lack of endurance and lack of professionalism in his early years.

The vast majority of high end players still take a couple of years to reach their potential, and that’s usually only if they have a good core around them.

Walsh had Cripps to protect him, and draw the focus of opposition midfields.

Oliver had Gawn, Petracca, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes, etc.

Bontempeli had Libba, Macrae and the rest of the Dogs midfield to draw the focus off him.

As we’re seeing at the Suns and North, it doesn’t matter how good the kids are, if there aren’t enough quality senior players around them, the team is going to struggle badly for a long time.

Is there a Judd or Petracca in this draft?

To date reports are no, the top mids are a class below this draft seems to be the view. That may change as the u18 season progresses.

People seem to be ignoring this. So the quality talls may just out point the quality mids in the top 4 this draft. And we dont need talls as much as we need mids.

Going laugh my head off if we keep pick 1 and choose a tall. Then read all the melts about how we should have split the pick.

If the standout no.1 is a tall, then I suppose I'd be OK with it, provided Williams goes the ruck/forward route.

I'll be pissed if there's no clear standout and we still go tall, however.

Another player has emerged this season as part of the 2023 crop, with Glenelg teenager Ashton Moir looking a No.1 pick contender.

Moir is an electric midfielder/forward who can kick brilliantly on both feet and makes things happen with his hands on the ball, having also booted five goals in his side's round one under-18 clash. ... Sounds like a good get. Perfect for us.

No, we need to play it safe.

We can't afford to take any risks with this pick.

Speculative low accumulating half back flanker with midfield potential, good leadership and private schooling, coming off an injury plagued U18 season please.

Also small-bodied as we only have 7XL jumpers to present them.

We need to keep our Future 1st Rd pick and not trade it ..
Would be good to get some talent early after the Venables and Brander failures ..

I reckon it’s confidence. At WAFL level he reads the play and judges the flight better than anyone. He just needs to get comfortable and feel like he belongs at senior level.

Unfortunately being in a defensive unit that’s copping 65 inside 50s a week isn’t helping his confidence.
Think of the reps he’s getting though!

Not sure we can even trade our future first.

We have to def use this years and i am pretty sure next years.

So 3 firsts in 4 years or something like that.

We have to use a 1st this year (ours or someone elses).

But have no restrictions trading a future 1st.

I'd love to see us bring in an additional 1st rounder either this year or next (meaning we take 3 x 1sts over the 2 drafts). Not sure how that happens outside of splitting picks though - and no point if at least 2 of those 1sts aren't within the top 5-6 (naturally our picks will be based on ladder position).

Has the reach, but is slow and doesn't seem to read the ball that well.
Has played 16 games, and turned 21 days ago.
Can anyone remember early days of Tom Barrass, Eric Mackenzie or Darren Glass?
Much better kick than the last two and is learning his trade, this season will be all about learning and pumping games into these guys.

Good. It'll save us from stupidly trading out of the top end of the draft as we enter a rebuild.
I think we can trade out next year's 1st rounder.

The board should be doing this:

Board: So Simmo, what is your draft strategy?

Option A:
Simmo: I'll trade next years first rounder
Board: Your fired. Clear your desk out.

Option B:
Simmo: I'll won't trade next years first rounder under any circumstances
Board: Good. We'll let you go about securing us a top 2 draft pick. Then you can clear your desk out.

I'd hope we do everything we can to get an extra first this year, except splitting the pick.
If anything we should be packaging lower picks to move up.

Something like 19 + 24 for 10 or one of 19/24 with next year's 2nd rounder.
Haven't looked at the points calculator though so dunno how it would look.

Barrass had about 2-3 years of solid WAFL form before playing and looked pretty good from his first AFL game.

TB was given the appropriate apprenticeship and allowed to work on his craft in the WAFL. He was kicking the door down for a call up eventually but stuck behind a solid group of defenders.

Good clubs grab the talls before they need them and allow them to develop their game in the twos. Who knows, if Brander stuck fat maybe he'd have been a prime example of that?

After last year, the first pick of round 2 seems as overvalued as the #1 overall pick.

Reckon we could swap #19 for a future 1st, which several clubs expecting a top 8 finish in 2023 would not see as much of a downgrade. Just need to trade with whichever club overestimates their prospects the most and we could end up with a top 10 pick in 2023.

A little bit of revisionism there. One of his first few games he was so terrible that we had to shift Yeo down back to play on Taylor Walker because Barrass was getting his arse handed to him.

I don’t recall the exact game, but he played 3 games in 15 because he was the only fit KPD and then 10 in ‘16 and got a rising star nomination.

This would have also been about the period of time when Tex was one of the more dominant KPF in the game and I’m sure he got the better of more than a few back men

Josh Caddy retired to open up a spot for Richmond in the mid-season draft, wonder if we’ll see any.
