I'm interested in winning games and flags. You don't win flags with a losing culture.

I agree, but Melbourne just won the flag, Fremantle are top 4 and Carlton are % off top 4. Gold Coast probably won't make the 8 but the fact they are still not out of it with 5 games to go is a step in the right direction for them, finally.

Between 2011 and 2010 these 4 clubs made the finals 7 times between them. We made it 8 times by ourselves. Yet we are 17th on 2 wins and the worst of them has 8 wins. No matter how bad you are - and those teams at their worst were diabolical - there's a lot to be said for stockpiling top 10 draft pick talent.

In his last years Drew Banfield successfully transitioned from the midfield to a back pocket player, very hard to beat one on one and managed to get a premiership 12 years after his 1st in 94.
I could see Redden doing something similar, he’s a very good kick, great tackler, good footy brain.
Thoughts?

With the imminent exit of Nelson from our list, I think we should start brainstorming on who our undeserved whipping boy for next year.

Just a quick list off the top of my head for starters.

1: WatermAllen
2: HEdwards
3: Adam Simpson
4: Hutchings
5: Pick #2
I’ll nominate NelSim,
Nelson for being Nelson and Simmo for continuously playing Nelson in the Midfield when he’s not a midfielder’s arseh*le.

He isn’t getting regular games, I wouldn’t be handing over Port’s second for Robertson.

Third rounder at best.
He was drafted in the second round of the 2019 draft (no.22). Three years later he has done nothing to maintain that sort of rating.

We certainly shouldn’t be giving up a second rounder for him. I don’t want us to go after him at all (or Bruhn for that matter) unless he shows AFL quality in the rest of the season.

Then his price goes up.

If you only ever want to trade players out once you know they are duds, and only want to trade players in who show they are good then you live by the mantra:

Buy high, sell low.

That's you.

Rival clubs circling on Nelson

Who the hell wants him, he's not even WAFL standard

Nothing less then a 2nd rounder 🤣🤣

Um. We've been more successful than both those clubs without a glut of top 10 picks.

And you want us to follow their example?

Why? Because after being crap for so long two clubs finally came good. And we are in a mini rebuild stage of the cycle.

Third rounder at best.

Brisbane wont care they need points.

He is under contract though.

But if Ashcroft nominates the Lions and they land Fletcher thats two more mids competing with Roberston.

Will be interesting to see if Nelson lands us any compo. 3rd rounder would be nice. 39.

Third round compo for Nelson, on-traded to Brisbane for Robertson?

Mini rebuild or full on rebuild?

One of the big concerns I read on here, is the shallow amount of talent in the 24 to 28 age bracket, particularly in the midfield.

I know trading in players can fast track a rebuild, but from where I sit (on the couch with man flu), it looks like you’re entering a full on rebuild.

Having a look at the replay of this game too.

Gee whiz, with about 10:40 to go in the first quarter Hewett definitely hears foot steps and has a fairly big squib (going back tamely with just an arm) as Hustwaite was bearing down on him. Didn’t look great.
I was pretty impressed with Clark and Hollands in that game. Northam played a nice game as a Ruck / Fwd. Ginbey was good for WA, along with Edwards who looks really good for 2023's draft. Hewett was blanketed by the VC mids and they kept him quiet.

After that game I'm going to look at more of Hewett during the champs because I want to see some more of his games and I'm not sold on him for our first rounder.

Based on that game alone (I will watch the rest over the coming weeks) I would go for:

Turn our first rounder into 2 top 15 picks (GWS may be keen given the incoming draft capital post 3/4 possible departures form the list, or target a swap with the SA clubs for Phillipou) - go for Hollands and Hewett / Clark. For our second round picks, go for Ginbey and Gilbey. If our third could snag Robertson - great. After that I would look at McQuilkin and Free from the WAFL.

There is obvious risk into trading out pick 2 in a swap for multiple picks in the first round, but I think there is some talent in the Top 10 that we might strengthen the list more than just one player - for me the gamble is worth taking.

We’re not desperate for points.

We’re potentially going to receive a band 2 (more likely band 3) compensation pick for Dan McStay leaving.

A band 3 compensation pick will give us enough points to be able to match Ashcroft, with points left over.

And that’s before we try and trade out our first round pick for extra points.

Fletcher won’t be competing with Robertson for a position inside. Most likely Fletcher starts as a HBF, before moving up to a wing.

I dont know what your definition of a full rebuild is.

I see the Eagles a year or two behind Collingwood. With a better spine.

Two more drafts and some astute trading we are back to mid table and building into finals.

Full rebuilds take 5 plus years.

As the saying goes nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.

Where has Roberston been forced to play to date?

He cant get a gig inside, Lions are too strong. So he's been forced to play outside.

Either way he is competing against Ashcoft and Fletcher.

Sheehan describes Fletcher as a wing who can also play inside. So a balanced mid.

Lol very first highlight "lovely left foot kick" puts it straight down the throat of the oppo
For a highlight video from a single game, it’s a pretty good one. Even in that first highlight, although he missed his target you can see he’s got a decent kicking action.

You should check out how poor some of the highlight videos are of most other draftees, eg.

I believe this will be year 2 (2nd draft) of a 5 year rebuild you’re in.

It looks like you’re fine for key defenders, but I don’t see a successor for NicNat or JK on your list yet.

Collingwood has far more depth and quality through their midfield and small defenders, both experienced and young players coming through. They’re definitely missing a quality young KPF and maybe a KPD.

I believe Collingwood is more than a couple of years ahead of you. But I also believe they might get stuck in the no man’s land of being stuck between 12th and 6th/7th, unless they trade in a couple of genuine stars (and no, McStay is not a star).
