He’s contracted for 2023 so would have to be traded. He seems pretty happy so far.
He seemed to be having a ball when being interviewed by OAllen i think it was.
Seemed like real camraderie ,and they were mates enough to take the piss out of each other

I mentioned here about a Rioli trade before. Honestly if we get a pick in the 20's for him we should go for it. He might want to be closer to family in Melbourne and also as I already mentioned I don't see him playing more than 3-4 more seasons anyway.

Think I read on here somewhere that he is (or was) living with Oscar

Chol didn’t kick 5 on him. Barrass was directly out marked by Chol for one of his goals and Barrass also went up for a spoil/ mark and missed the ball completely on another occasion, the ball got out the back and Harry had to leave Chol to pressure the GC player who was running into an open forward line. There was also a cheap free kick.

Our defenders put on a good show, don’t know why Edwards cops the criticism he gets on here sometimes. Gold Coast had +20 odd inside 50’s, and we nearly won the game.
People have short memories.
Glass couldn't kick, EMac got himself and us into so much trouble with his short kicks. Both were pretty rough early. At least Harry can kick.
As far as the playing on the big boys, it takes time to get the body contact timing right, and separation awareness, seem to remember Barrass being rag-dolled by Charlie Dixon in 2017 and thinking he wont make it (Charlie still kicked 6 on him in 2020 as well). Tommy has learnt how to play to his strengths and Harry may will get there.
He wouldn't even be playing if Gov was fit, if we can accept 2m tall ruckman need time to develop, we need to do the same for 2m tall defenders.
We may be crap now, but we are getting games into these young guys earlier than would normally happen, every cloud......

Relax. Latest vids in from Oscar's ongoing rehab program at Lablain:

I wouldn’t be shopping Rioli, but in view of the loss he’s just suffered if he came to the club and said “Family’s really important to me, I want to go play at Richmond with my cousins” I’d understand.

Pick 28 would probably do it. Richmond might disagree.

If he wants to go then yeah that's a good idea. Hopefully he wants to stay and be part of the rebuild

Yeah I think his going to stay. We have a pretty good indigenous culture at our club. Rioli seems pretty happy in WA. There's no reason for him to move unless his chasing premierships. At 27 he is probally thinking either stay with a bottom dweller and help rebuild or move to a premiership contender side.

That's where we will have some issues over the next few years. It's hard for us WA clubs to retain players when we are on the bottom of the ladder. If we don't start improving next season we might find it hard to retain some of our future youth players like Culley and Chesser once there contracts are up.

Rioli wont leave for a flag alone.

He will leave because he feels guilty and uncomfortable staying. I have seen this many times with indigenous footballers, some I played with and are still friends with. It is almost cultural. Its an avoidance measure. If they wrong someone they feel it, no matter how much they are genuinely sorry or if people have genuinely forgiven them. In the end they feel like they need a fresh start with a no negative history. Clean air.

It isnt just an indgenous thing. It is like a relationship that has seen hard times and one party wants a break and a fresh start. Or when things go pear shaped at work and even though mistakes are made and problems eventually solved sometimes you just need to work elsewhere to enjoy it.

Willie may just retire early like Cyril and go home. The AFL industry is a hard and demanding workplace. And many people value family and life ahead of such a demanding workplace.

Kennedys retirement might have say in Riolis thinking right now too. Kennedy is such a huge presence. Especially to our forwardline. His retirement for will pave new opportunities for some but for some like Rioli who's turning 27 and on the other end of the age scale. He may feel it's time to move on and start a fresh like his getting too old for the rebuild. I wonder if that's playing into him weighing up his options now.

go home factor always scares me - I think any kid would be happy to be on any AFL list - now that every has seen he is a potential gun there will be no shortage of teams trying to get in before his stock gets too high. really hope he wants to stay and him and eagles sort their s**t out

I can't think of a player we have lost immediately after their initial draft contract due to go-home factor (there may be some I am missing, but I can't recall any with major go-home factor 2 years in).

I don't think we should worry about go-home factor assuming we have done interviews etc (for all of the issues we seem to have regarding our recruiters on this board - missing any obvious go-home factor is not one of them).

Yes

To be fair he's gone from working in a chicken shop on minimum wage to an AFL salary, having access to all the best bars/clubs, from probably working hard to score girls that are 5 out of 10, to having 10 out of 10's throw themselves at him. He's probably enjoying life right now.

Daniel McConnell - pick 26 in 2003

Played 2 games

Traded to North in 2005 with pick 18 for picks 13 and 29

Got a decent player with pick 13 - games record holder for the club and premiership captain

McConnell played 4 games for North although health issues (glandular fever I think) wrecked his career

It is interesting it always comes up, but since 2000 I can only think of 3 players that we have genuinely wanted to keep that have left being Fraser Gehrig, Judd and Ebert. Of those we definitely won the Judd trade in the end, probably won the Gehrig trade (we got Daniel Kerr). With regards to the Ebert trade he was a solid player but I don't believe he moved the needle significantly and whilst we would have liked a better pick for him the nature of those compromised drafts meant that it was always going to be problematic for any trade deals at that time. Based on this I don't really see why the go home factor really impacts us significantly. I put it all down to a really good culture these days including the fact that we don't push players out and where they do want to make a move we try to oblige.
