Daniel McConnell - pick 26 in 2003

Played 2 games

Traded to North in 2005 with pick 18 for picks 13 and 29

Got a decent player with pick 13 - games record holder for the club and premiership captain

McConnell played 4 games for North although health issues (glandular fever I think) wrecked his career
Haha first time, I've seen his name posted here.

He's a friend of mine, he never really talks about his health issues.

I was in the UK when he got drafted, and for his time with us. Was he looking good pre glandular fever.

Going to push out a young mid or two you would think. Makes Deven Robertson more gettable.
Ely Smith is a certainty to be delisted. Possibly Tom Berry as well.

Zorko is 3 to 15 months from retiring.

And Jarryd Lyons has to be damn close to losing his spot in the senior team after this season.

If he can’t cement a spot in our best 22 next year, we’ve either traded in Jacob Hopper, or Lyons has photos of Fagan.

Someone on our board mentioned trading for Darling, seeing as we’re losing McStay.

Was quickly shouted down.

You’ve got McInerney and Fort as rucks and Daniher and Hipwood as key forwards. Do you really need a 30 year old key forward to replace McStay?

Think what you’d be in greater need of is a younger prospect for when Daniher retires. Maybe you’ve got someone, but no one’s coming to mind.

They're in the flag window and probably want someone now. Daniher and that other guy are inconsistent.

Someone at East Perth was very bullish on him pre-illness, reckoned he was the best youngster they’d seen since Judd. Can’t remember who it was.

Yeah pretty weird that the VFL stats have him playing as a full back? Seems he is out of favour from Fages as he played 16 games last year.

lol that’s dead wrong. Usually plays forward and mid. Has played mostly mid since Mathieson went up.

Our reserves team does have too many mids and rucks or ruck forwards, for players to play in their natural positions.

So if I take the current list and roll the ages forward 12 months, here is how we would look without any list changes.

I am aware that JK and Strnadica are already out so no need to tell me that

I am then taking out the 9 players leaving and adding changes that seem clear to me (but there may be some others) and have in red added what I think we need to be the 6 we positions we target at the draft. Excluding Sheppard, our list was 45 meaning we need to take 3 more players off the list than we draft. JK and Strnadica are 2.

The outs were

  • Retire - JK
  • FA - Nelson
  • Delist - Strnadica, Trew, Joyce, Naish, West, Dixon, Witherden

I think it will be a difficult decision on Witherden where I believe our ineffective defensive structures has meant he has not got close to being the reason we got him across.

In terms of our 2021 draft class of LEdwards, Winder and Trew, I cannot see clear daylight as to who stays or goes. The injuries to this trio have made it such that there could be nobody left on our list from the massive 2 years impacted by the Kelly trade.

When we heard we were all in with Kelly, our list shows we weren't joking

Our 22 and under would then total 13.

If we want top be more active in the draft, then the likes of Winder and LEdwards are in danger or we look to trade Rotham, pay out Langdon early, etc

We’ve got 5 KPP’s in our academy for the next two drafts, 2023 and 2024. Plus another in 2025.

Long way to go for those kids, but we’re hopeful.

Richmond have been very effective at trading out soldiers that may be over rated by other clubs. The likes of Ellis, Markov, Coleman-Jones, Higgins (though probably more than a soldier) and Choi (more a case of the KPF's were blocking him) mean that they have had great draft picks in return. We tend to be more protective as an interstate club and focus on a culture of retention.

Example. When were were at our best, our defence was ranked very high and we could possibly have got higher currency for Duggan, Cole, Nelson, HEdwards, Rotham, etc. Likewise when both Carlton and Doggies were sniffing about Petruccelle.

That is just our lot so no point moaning.

The good news in that from drafts in the last 12 months, we landed 3 keepers in Culley, Hough and Bazzo with Chesser likely to be good but we just do not know. Our picks this year will be crucial as to whether we can genuinely think we are only in the bottom 6 for another 2 or 3 years. Best case scenario I see is being on the edge of the 8 in 2025. There is no easy or quick bounce that I can envisage.

How did we sucker North into that deal?

I really hope Lukey Edwards can get a clean run at it next year. I just see a really dependable cog in the machine for us in him going forward.

He's around 190cm and is going to be playing at around 86-88 kegs next year I would have thought. Solid guy, good stock and shouldn't cost a motza to retain throughout his career.

Yeah not surprised that a no name website on VFL is full of shit. Yeah Tunstill and co means plus the need for points to get Ashcroft probably makes Robertson gettable. Anyway Ashcroft will be something else. Doing Judd type numbers at the lower grades.
