And that supports what I said earlier. Now until end of 2024 is a world of salary cap pain.

Agree that come end of 2024 things clear up as we offload the huge salaries that are currently killing us. It's up until then we suffer.

And the things that absolutely sh*t me are...
1) a lot of people saw this coming; and
2) we are not getting anything like value out of these guys (Except JD).

I've long held the belief that player salaries lag performance and output for young guys and performance and output lags salaries for old guys. With young guys you get value+ for money while old guys are fading away in both output and durability while still commanding the big bucks.
Therefore an old, overpaid list will generally underperform what they are being paid. WCE 2022 anyone?

If we were contending for a flag the next 2 years (which quite clearly we aren’t) our salary cap would be more of an issue because we would struggle to get in quality players like we did Jetta and Redden to fill specific roles

We’ve got a couple of years at least of hitting the draft to get as much young talent in as we can. The salary cap won’t impact that at all

It’ll be after 2024 that hopefully we will be in a position to round out our list via trades and/or FA

I don’t think the tight cap currently is as big a problem as you’re making out. Like I said it’s a hangover of rewarding players for their form when we were successfully contending

Waterman has had plenty of chances?

No he hasnt. He's been played all over the shop behind JK, JD and Allen. He been pushed up the ground and also into defense.

He also has had the worse midfield in tthe AFL kicking to other players, not him.

And people are sinking the boot in. Just image if he had a half decent midfield kicking it to him. Until then we will not know if he is good enough.

Exactly, and with the lack of inside 50s year all forwards have been hampered.

We should take Fiorini from the Suns. Would come cheapish.

Brodie 2.0, in that I can see similar performances for a second club.
I like this idea.

Or in a similar vein, Perryman and Dev Robertson.

I recall these two, plus Fiorini, featured prominently in Dylan’s excellent analysis thread of diamonds in the rough.

I’d be quite content seeing Shuey off a HFF. I think he would prove a regular goal kicker and be a real attacking threat in our forward 50 stoppages. He’s an excellent set shot too- minus Kennedy he would be one I would be happy to stake my life on.

He’s coming to the end, of course- but overall I think he makes us better when he’s fit. I’m not sure he has been all season in fairness.

Recent recyables haven't really worked out for us. He's played 29 games in the last 3 seasons is he injury prone?

Fell out of favour with Dew.

Questions about his defensive running and disposal from memory.

Darling pissed me off with this whole vaccine conundrum but he reminded me just how serviceable he can be.

He would be more valuable to us than what we will get in a trade. And if we traded him.....What does that mean for our forward line?

Allan / Waterman and who Dixon? - **** that!

Word on the Suns board, is that some of their fringe players are for sale, with a second round pick attached.

The bigger the contract, the higher the attached pick.

Fiorini one of the names mentioned.

3 weeks of 30 plus possies and this week 17 clearances is similar to Brodie's output who has done well at Freo.

Herald Sun did their rich list today, so here's our takeaway.

West Coast’s salary cap squeeze has been laid bare, with the two-win Eagles spending nearly half their money on just seven players - five of which are 30 or older.

According to the Herald Sun’s 100-player rich list, the Eagles are estimated to be spending more than $6m of their $13m cap on Jeremy McGovern, Andrew Gaff, Tim Kelly, Jack Darling, Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey and Nic Naitanui alone.

I'm sure we loaded them in various ways but Shuey ($850k) and Nic's ($750k) big deals come off the books this year, Gov ($1.1m) next year, Yeo ($850k)/Gaff ($900k)/Darling ($850k) the year after.

Would gladly eat a shit contract for two years if it came with a pick attached.

Gaff is the only other Eagle in the top 20 at $900,000

Oh my.

Had a crack at a Round 1, 2023 team. Tried for a 7/8/7 defender/midfielder/forward structure, but went with 7/9/6 instead as we have to be rotating Shuey onto the flanks more as we go, plus have seen good things from Kelly there when we've had other mids able to service the forward line while he's down there.

This is a mix of what I want and what I expect (e.g. Gaff will be picked even though I wouldn't be going near him next year), and assumes full health which is folly.

Ages as of Round 1, 2023.
